Twin cam 110. Although the reality is, the M8 is a better engine as far as creating more HP and having a broader torque curve.

I've test ridden all the new tourers since the Evo and every one of them just makes me feel that I already have one of these. If I wanted to drag race I would not be looking at a Harley so the increases in torque and horse power are meaningless. My 97 Evo Road King and I have been everywhere at least twice over the years. It's always given me everything I've wanted from a motorcycle and will be my last bike.

I’m new to riding, only two years, but I’ve only ridden Harleys. I started on an iron 883 and was going to trade up to a 2015 low rider dyna with the 103 HO engine and a stage 1. Beautiful bike, sounded amazing! I was ready to sign the paperwork before I got around the block, but then I rode a M8 slim and everything changed. I ended up with my ‘21 FXLRS with the 114 but it’s not just the very noticeable increase in power, it was the whole ride quality, the suspension, the handling, the comfort, and yeah, the power. I’d still love to get ahold of a good 103 bike at some point, but if I’m making payments on just one motorcycle I decided it would have to be the M8 bike.

My experience computers in the ‘90s with trying to stay on the cutting edge of technology taught me a valuable, and very expensive, lesson. I learned how to be content with what I had and that I really didn’t need the latest and “greatest”. Transferring this experience to my return to motorcycles has allowed me to be truly satisfied with my recently acquired 16 year old Dyna Wide Glide with its 88 inch Twin Cam. Technology is great stuff as long as it serves you and you don’t end up serving it.

@@geraldscott4302, it’s far less expensive if you can be content with technology that’s “matured” rather than needing to have what’s fresh of the presses. Exactly why if I finish my current project I might get a Harley for a second bike. But 600-800 lbs wet weight? Harley needs a strong lightweight setup and more hp out of the M8. I don’t have to have the quickest bike but I don’t want to have to play catch-up all the time. EU5 hosing up new bikes with gadgetry, safer perhaps, a bit slower. But I personally find Hinckley Triumph triples to be an interesting foundation for a modern inexpensive but quick bike that’s not over stressed w/ a 12.5::1 compression ratio for example. Because why not? Cheap quick fun. It just seems like you need $$$ to get 150-170 hp on a heavy bike. Or put a little work into an older pre electronic nannies bike and start where M8s end. Sorry just a fact. No disrespect. I just prefer zoom over cruise, or something like that. Condemned to being a bad boy for life I guess lol. -Matt’s dad

the M8 isn't really a new engine anymore. it's been out since 2017. that was quite a while ago. most of these issues have been ironed out on the current models with very few to report. overall the M8 seems to be a proven reliable engine so long as you don't do any crazy modifications to it.

EVO is the best motor for reliability HD ever made. Honestly as a Harley Davidson Certified Master Tech, I won't own a Harley built after 2002 because of the cheap ass bearings that they continue to install in the Crankshaft and Camshaft Compartment. If you absolutely have to have an HD and EFI, buy a 2002. But if ya want a solid reliable motor that has next to no issues as long as you keep up on general maintenance, buy an EVO. My 1997 FLHRPI (has a carb on it) had 298k on it before I rebuilt and my boss's 1986 FXST had 547k before it was ever torn into. You can also build a lot of power out of EVOs with simple upgrades that don't even require a big bore kit. 10.5/1 Compression Pistons, a .510 lift Cam, and a 7 angle Valve Job and an EVO will make 80hp and 80+ FTLBS of Torque. And it'll do it reliably for quite sometime.

I had a 2016 twin cam, had valve stem issues at 30,000 so took opportunity to install a stage 3 110. The bike was noisy before but even noisier after upgrade. It immediately destroyed a compensator and even a brand new one was chunking along. I bit the bullet and bought a 114, 2021 and upgraded to a torque cam. The M8 is so much better in power, vibration and heat. It’s a no brainer. If you can afford an M8, just buy one.

I love the sound that my cammed 103 makes. I was going to trade in my slim for an M8 low rider, but I didn't care for the 107. It's a vanilla feeling and sounding motor compared to the twin cam. I noticed going from a cvo 110 to a 107 M8. The Milwaukee felt like a narrow power band. I couldn’t rev it up as high as my twin cam. I had to learn to shift earlier and lean on the torque and grunt to accelerate instead of dropping gears and winding it up. I’m on a Milwaukee 8 114 now and this motor likes to be revved up a little more than the 107 did. I don’t need a tire shredder, this 114 feels really strong. I think from the seat of my pants it would run with if not walk away from a cvo 110. I’m happy with my stock 114. I’ll probably install a cam, exhaust and tune at some point but not high on my priorities right now….. oh, my 114 is getting 47mpg two up. Forget my thoughts of modifications, fuel economy where the bike already feels pretty strong, I’ll keep it stock. I don’t like the road glide tho…. I miss my batwing😢

Could have bought anything and still did the 103. Added a big cam and maybe it’s a bit scary at 100+ and I’m sure the new bikes handle better and go faster with the same work. Like a Honda. Omg the sound my bike makes is just magical. Anyway the new bike are really nice also so you ain’t done wrong if you bought one.

I have owned the twin cam 88 and from that experience I would not own any of their later trash I will stick to my Evo yes the others may have more power but my Evo goes faster than I want to go on public streets anyway and almost for got I never have to work on it well all most I had to put a new stator on it but hey that is a lot better than having your pressed togather flywheels shift on you and yes they can do that

I bought a 2017 ultra limited with very low miles in 2019 for a great price because of the oil pump videos out there scaring the hell out of Harley owners, I went ahead and put the S&S 475 cam chest kit in myself and new head pipe plus DBX40 pipes along with the thunder max ecm best Harley I have ever ridden or owned and by the way I still own my 1986 Softail custom for 30 years now which I will never sell.

Awesome explanations. The debate continues TC or M8? I'll say this about the M8, horses cost money! You can buy 2 decent twincams for the costs of one M8 + performance add ons. A little head work on a 103TC and a mid range Cam will definatley keep you smiling when pulling up to an M8, lol

I love my 2023 Street Glide 107. Plenty of power for just cruising, which I prefer. I owned a 2020 114 that sumped and destroyed the engine. My fingers are crossed with my 107.

Give me the 103 TC any day! The M8 is for the big baggers and riding down the highway at top end. The 103 will carve the twisty and out preform.

I have a TC88 with S&S cams, plenty of power for everything I do. Chasing big HP on a Harley is a mug's game. I bought a 200hp naked bike for half the price of my Harley, rides amazing but rarely ride it because it's a one trick pony, ride fast, ride faster, ride even faster & probably die.

Depending on your point of reference. The early and I mean early engines were as good as the competition and often better. The eight valve racers and even the flat head motors were as good as anything else. Even the knuckle head pan or shovel were out there. Alas as the evo arrived it solved many issues but was left so far behind. Twin cam or m8 are in reality 30 or 40 years too late but still 1/2 a century behind. I will be buying an m8 next year but not because of its progress.

88, stage 1, S&S 509 cams, V&H true duals/ eliminator 400 exhaust, and fuelpak… runs the way I like, and paid for! Don’t see the need for more power.

I think after having several Harley’s in the past 40 years, I really like my 2017 M8 the power from a stock motor is very pleasing, compared to my 1986 softail which will be with me till the end of my days.

A wood cam in a 114 is good for about 110 to 120 horse and torque depending on your tune and exhaust.

I understand that a belt drive can transmit up to 100 horsepower but above hundred horsepower they snap. When you have such a high horsepower motorcycle do you have to go to a double or triple row chain?

I have a 2009 Road King with many high end modifications and I wouldn’t trade that for a stock M8 Harley. The sound, vibration and just overall ride feel of it just can’t be compared. Yes, the new M8 might have more overall speed or performance but mine does just fine and racing is not my intend. Is the ride enjoyment that I desire.

The compensators on the 103's were junk, had to replace mine at 10K, sounded like someone was hitting the primary with a ball peen hammer. All the M8 touring bikes are too expensive and too heavy so I made the switch to a BMW K1600 bagger. Now my Harley riding buddies struggle to keep up!
