A couple of notes: 1. If you remembers, there was another girl with Sabito, Makomo. She is actually older than both him and Giyu and had already been dead at that point 2. One of the guys part of Giyu's group is Murata, the low-ranking demon slayer that Tanjiro met when fighting all the spider demons. Dude is lucky af to survive this long 3. 15:30 Kinda late, but basically the ropes around the boulders were Shimenawa. They are a rope that represents a pure or consecrated space for communing between the heavens and earth. You can commonly see them in front of shrines or Forges where Katana are made, and around objects that are believed to be sacred or have spirits inhabiting them. You notice when Sabito first appears as a spirit to Tanjiro , he was on top of the Boulder "Within" the sacred space. You could interpret this as either Sabito's spirit inhabiting the boulder, or Tanjiro was communing with the spirits through the sacred space. Sabito and the other spirits disappears after Tanjiro cuts the boulder, and the Shimenawa with it.

Giyuu has big survival guilt and self-esteem issues, seeing his backstory was very nice but also sad and heartbreaking. The part about how he lost his sister really got to me, it really sweet how his haroi is a representation of two of the most important people in his life and how he lost both of them brutally and tragically. The way Tanjirou consistently but sweetly pestered Giyuu was so funny and heartwarming. Tanjirou just has a way with people, the young man is just pure sweetheart. I also saw how Giyuu mentioned Shinobu as well Samoo. That boy is a true Tsundere.

Giyu lost everyone. He lost his parents to disease and then his sister tried to take care of him. After his sister died, he tried to tell people she was killed by a demon, but people literally thought he was crazy so they sent him away to live with a relative who was a doctor. He ran away, got lost in the wilderness, and almost died in the cold but was found by Urokodaki. Sabito dying was the last straw. He distanced himself from everyone and has been suffering from grief and survivor’s guilt this whole time. It’s honestly incredibly sad. 💔

18:15 indeed both sisters were alive when they found Kanao. Think it was even Kanae (older sister) who gave her that coin Kanao used to make decisions before. (As for the similar first name, but Kanao’s family name being Tsuyuri and not Kocho, despite being brought up as Kanae’s and Shinobu’s little sister, I think they basically let Kanao pick her own name) We didn’t really see earlier exactly who killed Kanae, but since they brought it up again it seems like we are going to find out 👀

Tanjiro talking with Sabito and Makomo (they are not related, just orphans rescued by Urokodaki), is not related too much with Tanjiro being the main character or special in some way. In Shinto religion, the Shimenawas are the ropes that are around objects, like shrines, trees or in this case the big rock, this turn the object in a Yorishiro wich then can atract spirits. Kodamas is the name for the spirits that inhabits trees and Iwakura for rocks, like sabito and makomo

I like how this is called a training arc, but so far, we haven’t really seen much training. Personally, I don’t have a problem with that because to use several episodes to focus on actual training can be really monotonous. If you ask me, it only works if we get what we’ve been getting so far - getting to know characters better.
