Ok, this song literally breaks my heart. The entire concept of the song is so deep. The lullaby in the beginning is an old lullaby called "ili, ili" (ILY ILY), particular to a certain region in the Philippines, I believe. Not sure if it means "hush, hush". This is a song of abandonment of children, a growing problem in the Philippines, that because of poverty, Filipinos are forced to go abroad, leave their children in the care of other relatives ie grandparents, aunts, etc while they send money and boxes called 'balikbayan boxes' filled with material gifts to 'buy their love'. The song is a cry of many children who grew up, having the privilege of a good life, a good education but lack the loving touch of their own mothers and presence of their fathers, essential to a development of a child. The song is about the children talking to their parents, part angry and resentful for their absence, and part lonely and grateful for their sacrifices. Then the Alamat members singing 5 different Philippine languages... Like what Josh said, it's SO different and experiemental. Because it truly is. And Brad actually hearing a Christmasy tone to it. Well, Christmas without your parents is one of the saddest holidays really. Many Filipino children experience that, not seeing their parents for years, up to a decade. People who don't even understand the languages in this song get it. That's the power of music. Ppop really is now the embodiment of literally breaking borders and stereotypes when OPM never even dared to sing other PH languages, but Tagalog on pop radio. The MV in itself is very artistic. There are so many symbolisms Filipinos will relate to. To make this into a pop song this beautiful is BEYOND ME. Pure musical genius and artistry showing the depths of our culture, both good and painful- everyone who is involved in this song and the entire team of ALAMAT, a job well done. It just doesn't sound good. It's eargasm and hits deep in your veins. The song touches our hearts, and it's inexplicable. What a MASTERPIECE.

Ili means child but the course of time changed it's meaning we as kids before thought it means cradle but we were damn wrong cause the song tells that the mother is asking her child to sleep. Before I heard the word Ilu which means orphan and then I did not realized that the Ili is the opposite of the word Ilu.

There are about 120 to 187 LANGUAGES in the Philippines. I speak two. This band and its members come from various regions of the Philippines; The Philippines consist of 7641 islands. And certain parts of this song were sung by the members in their own languages. This is the only band that does that; singing parts of the song in their respective language...American-Filipino here on the West Coast of the USA.

To Filipinos who keep commenting that they are singing in different dialects, NO THEY ARE NOT. They are singing in different Filipino languages. Bisaya, Kapampangan, Hiligaynon, Ilocano - those are languages. Manila Tagalog, Bataan Tagalog, Batangas Tagalog, Bulacan Tagalog - those are dialects.

It's the other way around. PILIPINO/FILIPINO is the National Language and is TAGALOG based. The rest are Sub-Languages or Dialects. TAGALOG is the LINGUA FRANCA of the Philippines and the Regional Languages are DIALECTS. DIALECTS are limited to each Region whereas TAGALOG are used throughtout the Country, thus it becomes the LINGUA FRANCA.
@kuzu_no_ha
@kuzu_no_ha Жыл бұрын
@@chattcedric6321as far as I know, this is the definition based on PH law. However, from a global linguistics standpoint, the concept that defines the relationship between languages and dialects is mutual intelligibility. A simplistic example: Someone speaking only Tagalog vs. Someone speaking only Ilocano : they will NOT understand each other: mutually UN-intelligible. Therefore they are speaking different languages. Someone speaking Bulacan Tagalog vs. Batangas Tagalog : there may be differences in some words but they will be able to understand each other. Therefore, they are speaking two different dialects of a language. A global example: British English and American English are different dialects of the English language.

@@kuzu_no_ha Generally, LANGUAGE is a form of COMMUNICATION. Now the DIFFERENCE between LANGUAGE and DIALECT has been in a somewhat of a quandary by Linguistics and Scholars. Here's my take and been checked and confirmed in Google. LANGUAGES are broader, and DIALECTS are smaller and more specific, and often REGIONAL. Languages are thought of as more formal and clearly defined, whereas dialects can be looser and more fluid in use. Oftentimes, LANGUAGES are ADOPTED as “OFFICIAL” by countries and states, but DIALECTS are not. A DIALECT is generally a particular form of a language which is specific to a REGION or social group and usually has differences in pronunciation, grammar, syntax and vocabulary. It's still a bit fuzzy to understand because DIALECT can be spoken by people living in one particular town. Now let's come to LINGUA FRANCA. LINGUA FRANCA is a LANGUAGE that is ADOPTED as a common language between speakers of a nation among other native languages. Having said that, what is now the LINGUA FRANCA of the Philippines? The 1987 constitution designates FILIPINO, a standardized version of TAGALOG, as the NATIONAL LANGUAGE and an OFFICIAL LANGUAGE along with ENGLISH. Filipino is regulated by Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino and serves as a LINGUA FRANCA used by Filipinos of various ethnolinguistic backgrounds. Hoping this will settle all quandaries and/or misunderstanding of the matter in question.

I think the part where it sounded like a Christmas song was significant. just a trivia: alamat's ily ily is derived from a hiligaynon/ilonggo lullaby folk song "ili ili tulog anay" which is sung by a relative to a child while the mother is out buying the bread. i think "ily ily" is a word play of " i love you" and the "ili ili" lullaby. the meaning also expresses the societal issue of today's philippines, where, bcos of poverty, parents of a lot of children chose to go abroad to work and make money to provide for their families. i love this song, i am a new magiliw and this is my favorite of all their song, the music video is also very touching, and this song also convey the side of the story of the "overseas filipino worker" who endures being away of a loved one to work hard and earn money, a child who misses their parents, and the child's life that seems luxurious outside but completely unhappy bcos there is just a lot materialistic things and money can give.

They are called LANGUAGES. Dialect is a variation of a language. Example, ENGLISH is a language. US English, Australian English, Philippine English etc are dialects of the English language. There would be some variations but not enough to not understand each other. Local example, ILOCANO is a language. Ilocos Ilocano, La Union Ilocano, Isabela Ilocano etc are dialects of the Ilocano language. The Ilocanos from these different provinces, they might have different intonations or minor differences in some words but they are still able to understand each other. These provinces are speaking the Ilocano dialect. On the contrary, if two person does not understand each other, then it is LANGUAGE. An Ilocano speaker would not be able to understand a Kapampangan speaker because they are totally different because they are LANGUAGES. SO ALAMAT IS SINGING 7 or MORE DIFFERENT LANGUAGES, NOT DIALECTS, IN THEIR SONGS.

Even linguists debate over dialect and language probably because before they classify these languages as dialects and so before that's what school books have. I think some linguists are still debating (with other languages classifications, not these on the video) just like in every comment section I saw for songs with various languages. Anyways, that's why, people are not just wrong wrong, but of course people have to relearn or learn new things too. Philippines have a lot of languages (plus dialects of that languages) and we are not even at the top 10. Papau New Guinea and Indonesia are at the top I think.

There are various Tagalogs, e.g. Tagalog from Bulacan, Tagalog from Quezon, Tagalog from Batangas, Tagalog from Rizal, and Tagalog from Metro Manila. So Tagalog is the language, and dialects are these variations.

Alicia Keys's "Harlem's Nocturne" comes to mind. This group is very different from other PPOP groups. I hope the mainstream PPOP audience is ready for their sound cuz they're the reason why I converted from being a PPOP basher into a solid PPOP fan!

I'm a filipino, but most of their songs has lines that most filipinos don't understand. because they all came from different provinces in the Philippines that have their own dialects :) :) :)

Simple differentiation of dialects to languages. Language+dialect= can still understand each other. Language+Language= Cannot understand each other. Can Alamat members understand each other using their native tongue? No. The misconception of Tagalog as the Philippines language and the rest are just dialects is wrong and being corrected through Alamat as posted in one of their video with the guest SME.

Hindi DIALECT, LANGUAGE ang tama. Ang tagalog ng Bulacan, Tagalog ng Batangas, Tagalog ng Cavite are Tagalog DIALECTS kasi kahit iba iba ang intonations/accent and kahit meron variations ng ibang words gaya ng "ganire" for "ganito" in some Tagalog provinces ay nakakaintintdihan pa rin ang mga Tagalog speaking region , whereas ang Tagalog, Cebuano, ilocano, Hiligaynon, Pangasinan, Ibaloi, Ibanag, etc are LANGUAGES kasi hindi magkakaintindihan ng salita.
