How did you get that Icarus reference?? The painting that you were talking about is literally titled "the fall of Icarus" and, it's blocked in the video, but it depicts Icarus falling into the sea. When Jungkook was being lifted into the air, you can actually see tiny feathers floating in the air around him. Other than that, there's a lot of heavy references to a book called Damian, but there's probably a lot of other comments about that so I won't try to explain it lmao.

Yeah, Jimin's high voice fit so well to the vibe of the song but I feel like his androgynous features also did a lot for this video. I mean, it wouldn't be any less than great if he didn't have that but they were already going for mysteriousness and sensuality so I think it fit very well with the vibe - even duality, as you said.
@SemilieJ953 жыл бұрын
one thing i always think about regarding the Icarus reference that no one ever mentions is that Jungkook is representing Icarus, and he is paired with Namjoon in the MV, so Namjoon represents the father who gave Icaurs the wings.. And Namjoon is the entire reason why Jungkook is in BTS.. Like Namjoon also gave Jungkook the wings to fly with. Wether the symbolism was intentional or not, its very fascinating. (in the japanese MV, we also literally see Namjoon making Jungkook drink the absinthe)

Luckily the four vocalists can all hit the same notes for the most part. Even though v is a baritone he can hit the same notes as jimin lol actually yeh so can jin and jungkook … jungkook and v were complaining about having to sing a key higher bc of the other two lol JKs voice is actually pretty deep but because he’s the main vocalist he sings all over the range but applies the most techniques to add more vocal color and textures depending on the style of song and what he wants to portray… Jks voice can be deceiving bc ppl expect high notes from jimin and jin and low notes from v…. But half the time people complimenting jimin and jins high notes it’s actually jungkook and same thing for vs low notes lol it’ll actually be jungkook but bc he can mimic their voices so well… people get confused bc his voice and technique is unique. V blows me away with his range, jin with his high notes and so much passion and emotion and he sings with his whole voice… like a more basic way of getting to the notes but he absolutely crushes it and can do so much more than I expected… it’s really cool…. Jimin tends to sing with that kinda vocal “cry” kinda sound and it’s like his signature and especially if you hear them live he does it all the time now… like doesn’t matter what kinda song but it’s very distinct and easy to pick out jimin typically especially live with that kinda cry… super emotional… vs texture with his tone is Ugh gorgeous!!!! Jk has so many tricks in his bag that it’s crazy he hasn’t really ever taken vocal lessons since debut … he’s just a prodigy in so many things lol
@Nilaratna3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! All four vocalists sing exceptionally high for men. How crazy is that when none of them except JK had any real singing training before joining BTS (at least JK was the only one who specifically had interest in becoming a singer as a young teen)? V was interested in ‘music’ in general and learned saxophone, not singing. Jimin was a dancer from the start. And singing wasn’t even on Jin’s radar, not by a long shot (and he now has such a silvery and powerful voice, perfect for ballads). They sing higher than I ever could and I’m female. Must be one of those things that was meant to be. Hitman Bang must have had a sixth sense for them because, as JK said (with amusement), the CEO really likes high-pitched notes! 😂😅💜

@tigerlilyem-o9s3 жыл бұрын
Blood Sweat and Tears video and song were built and written based on Demian, a novel by Hermann Hesse which won a nobel prize in literature back in 1946. I read this book (because of this Mv) and I'll try my best to interpret and summarize the story here. The story follows a young boy named Sinclair who had a friend named Demian. Demian acts as Sinclair's mentor during his childhood and transition to adulthood. Sinclair as a young adult experienced series of existential crisis, believing he lives in between the world of light (the world of illusion, full of goodness) and "the dark world" (the real world which is full of lust, temptation, anger and evil world). Demian, and later on Sinclair's another mentor Pistorius, believe that in order to become a full person a human needs to embrace both of their light and dark sides. This will then lead Sinclair to find out about Abraxas, the god of light and darkness. There are sooo many imageries and jaw-dropping details on the MV that represent details in the book that I cannot write here because this comment is already an essay. lol. But the point is this song is about temptation, about being a human and embracing both of your good and dark sides. The scene where Jin kissed the statue (which I believe the representation of Abraxas) means he seals the deal with the devil himself in order to fully embrace himself as a person who isn't perfect, full of flaws. The white and black doors represent the world of light and the real world. The phrase that RM read in English here was also taken from the book, page 26 (on the version that I read). It says "He too was a tempter, he too was a link to the second, the evil world with which I no longer have anything to do." "He" here refers to Demian, that Sinclair once thought as a bad influence for him, maybe it's because Sinclair tried to deny his dark sides. The book is heavily influenced by a swiss philosopher and psychiatrist Carl Jung, who was Hermann Hesse's doctor back then. Hesse learned a lot about Jung's psychoanalysis and experienced it himself so that was why Demian was heavily influenced by it. What makes it even more interesting, BTS album MOTS 7 is also based on Carl Jung theory (hence the songs Persona, Shadow, and Ego were born-- these 3 elements are important in Jung's theory Maps of the Soul). BTS are deep, my friends. They literally make a lot of armys become smarter and read on classic literature like this because of them. lol. Please note once again that this is all my own interpretation after reading the book, take it with a grain of salt. Welcome to the BTS Universe!

@erume57763 жыл бұрын
you've done a really great job! i just want to explain it more detailed the mv is tied to the theme of the temptation (the neon signboard 3:12), but that's not all the meaning, it's not just the metaphorical story about how we always want bad things. the MV and the whole concept of Wings album and its short films (don't try them yet, you need to be really indepth with BTS Universe to appreciate them fully) - in another words the whole era is based on symbolism connected to the Herman Hesse's book Demian, where the main character (MC) explores his psyche while growing up (spoken lines in this MV and short films are quotes from the book). Theme goes along with coexistence of 'dark' and 'light' in our lives. MC was taught to see only the good side of the world, which is wrong, because the world isn't perfect and has bad side too. One can't live fully embracing just the good. You should accept both. The quote from the book that i really like is MC's thoughts: 'Why are only pleasant things attributed to the God if he created the whole universe? Are not both the light and dark sacred?'. The visuals of mv follow this theme: boys grew up and now facing new temptations to overcome or succumb to it thus they are acting defiantly, as if trying to seduce the viewer. There's a lot of pieces in the MV that are full of symbolism: every picture, statue, sound, object • an apple which means sin both in the religion and the book. Jimin is connected to an apple specifically, but they also all have an apple on their plate in the last supper scene 5:06 • green color also plays the role of a bad things like a devil's blood or a poisonous absinthe reputed to be a hallucinogen and banned in some countries. Namjoon is connected to the absinthe, his lines are "But your wings are wings of the devil. In front of your Sweet is bitter bitter" 4:19. behind the sweetness of the drink (absinthe is often drunk with sugar) lies its real essence of bitterness. it symbolises succumbing to temptation and denying the real world in favor of an illusion • a blindfold that keeps one from seeing the worlds as it is - then when blindfold is gone you see green tears 11:01 • Black and white doors on the sides of the “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” picture that can be representing the inner fight of good and evil 3:02. “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” itself depicts the fall into hell of angels who rebelled against God, they turn into ugly monsters and good angels give them battle. In fact, this is the main idea of the struggle between good and evil, the choice of your side in this battle. there were also sculptures of an angel and a demon on the sides of background in the set for the choreo 3:37 • behind Jungkook's back is a painting of Icarus 3:43. I think everyone is familiar with Greek mythology and is aware that Icarus was presented with wings, but he could not resist the temptation and flew too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt so he fell. The story echoes the ideas of the song and the title of the album itself: "WINGS". Behind Tae when he jumps from the balcony is "The Fall of Icarus" too 8:39 • a kiss of a fallen angel as an acceptance of a darker side and resolution of the inner chaos. Above the mirror in the MV there's a Nietzsche quote 11:06 (who also has a lot to do with the book's ideology): 'You must have a chaos inside you to give birth to a dancing star'. It's a reference to Nietzsche's ideas about a superman - a creature who, in his power many times surpasses an ordinary person, denies fear and regret, and uncompromisingly follows the chosen path, being the creator of his own destiny. The superman is described in his book "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and the ideas from there closely connect with "Demian"; MC in the book has a few mentors, with help of who he learns life - and you can see that in the beginning of the MV every younger member is paired up with older one + Yoongi playing organ is a direct reference to the one of MC's mentors. Jin is an observer just like the MC in the book. You also can notice that the rest of the boys in pairs are divided into 'good' and 'bad': • Namjoon drinking absinthe and subverting yet innocent Jungkook into it (he has the candle with the green wax that jungkook later "eats" 4:50, and they both lay in Namjoon's room with green dust 7:54) • Jimin having an issue with temptation (holding apple) and Yoongi trying to save him from it (closing his eyes with a hand or a blindfold) 8:33 • Tae being the fallen angel himself 10:46 and Hoseok representing hope and shooting a colourful arrow to him 7:33. I think Hoseok's theme is more prominent in the Japanese version of the mv (it's COMPLETELY different, but be careful, Japanese releases can get blocked). J-hope also has the statue of Pieta, that has the meanings of piety, compassion 4:26 I would say that especially from Jimin-Yoongi pairing in this mv you can tell that there's no answer what is right: good or evil. The apple is the sin, but the sin is the part of the world. Neglecting it and being blindfolded prevents you not only from "bad" things but from living a life and being yourself: the blindfold holds Jimin to a closed door and doesn't let him go 9:17 the Nietzsche quote also give a hint that hiding from bad may actually be worse then the bad itself, because without accepting all sides of self one can't reach their full potential. and BTS has a whole another era talking about exploring one's self So the story is about exploring the world in its good and bad in order to explore your own self and become something greater

This just reminded me of a random tweet I saw about haters accusing BTS/Big Hit of defacing sacred objects because Michelangelo’s Pietà statue blows up at the end. I mean... are there not Hollywood movies blowing up the entire Vatican?! And everything and anything else they want to blow up, like the pyramids? Just gotta shake our heads in bemusement about that. Always the double standards... ANYWAY 😅... would love it if you’d also react to their dance practices (where they perform the whole choreo in the studio) - the one for this is especially impressive (among a bunch of impressive ones). You get to see all the detail in the choreo and especially how they move in and out of different formations which is really cool and also adds to the meaning of the music itself. The practices are on their official BANGTAN TV channel. It pains me when I can’t see the choreo clearly in live performances where they cut away from key moments (and I’m not even a dancer, just someone who likes watching it). And of course, choreo is one of the main pillars of the whole K-pop world. Thank you for taking this journey!

You're amazing to get all that, really. When I first watched BST in 2016 back when I still stan a lot of K-pop groups except BTS, I never really understood and noticed all that. I just paid attention to the dancing and singing and never looked at the meaning behind it since that's what I do with other groups before. Since K-pop groups uses visuals like this as well and uses various themes for their comeback but there wasn't really any deep meaning behind it, I thought it was the same with BTS. I used to only pay attention to the beat, visuals of the members, singing, rapping, and dancing since there was no meaning to look for. I only became an ARMY in 2018 and that's when I realized how deep this song actually is. The references, the art, the lyricism, the visuals, everything. Even the album, "Wings" where BST is from, I'm still diving deeper to it up until now. BTS is just amazing. It's hard to explain how amazed I am with my limited vocabulary and what makes it even better is that they make and participate in creating their own art. That's how big the gap is with BTS and other groups.

Blood, Sweat, and Tears was released in 2016. It is indeed an incredibly symbolic video - there is so much analysis out there, I could not hope to replicate it in a comment, except to say you are on the right track, well done! Others have pointed to the book Demian, by Herman Hesse, that a lot of the video is based on - there is also a quote by Nietzsche on the wall, in German (the quote about it being necessary to have chaos inside you in order to give birth to a dancing star). The song, and the whole concept around it - really creative 💜💜 Yes, the Fall of Icarus is referenced, and the painting that Jin starts off in front of is The Fall of the Rebel Angels…The fall from grace and temptation, the choice between good and evil, acceptance of imperfection and self…it’s all there. I will always regret the fact that I got introduced to kpop by a group whose songs don’t have meaningful lyrics or MVs and just has rhyming lines and that’s it. Then a year later I discovered BTS and thank god for that.

This video is absolutely gorgeous - it’s literal art. You did an amazing job at interpreting it haha, much better than me after my first time watching! I’m really looking forward to rise of bangtan - just remember it can be a bit overwhelming as there’s a lot so take your time if you want. I’d recommend reacting to the full chapters and the deleted scenes/bonus content because they add a lot more to each chapter, but some reactors choose to watch them off camera because it’s easier - it’s up to you and what you feel like doing! It would probably be a good idea to watch “No more dream”, “we are bulletproof part 2” and maybe also “N.O.” before starting, to get a feel for early bts and the songs referenced in the first couple of episodes, and then the comments can tell you which songs to listen to for each chapter? Excited for it however you choose to do it 💜

Here’s a bit more info on BS&T mv Notes: The paintings & statuary are All symbolic... 1. Painting near the beginning Jin is gazing at is “Fall of the Rebel Angels” by Bruegel (also note the arches to the left & right are black & white..choices!) * painting behind Kookie on a swing is “Lament of Icarus” by Draper * J Hope is seen in front of “Pieta” by Michelangelo * the elegant dinner table has 6 of them seated and Jin raising a glass... think The Last Supper by Da Vinci (and betrayal) also, do you see the single apple on each plate? * Jimin / Yoongi and the apple.. later Yoongi blindfolding Jimin and the apple? Temptation. * Taehyung sitting on a ledge and jumping down~note: (Willfully falling, even enjoying it is a very important clue) in the background “Landscape With The Fall of Icarus” also by Bruegel * Jungkook floating without the swing (youth and innocence gone) falling feathers around him indicating he is Icarus. 2. They are Not saying ‘money money money’ ~ they are saying “wahni mahni, mahni mahni mahni” ~ meaning “want it more, more more more” this song is about the temptations in youth. 3. Yoongi is playing an organ. (Like some churches have) 4. At 10:38 the wall Jin is facing has the carvings (translated->) “You must have chaos in your soul to give birth to a dancing star.” by Nietzsche (One of Joonie’s fav quotes) 5. Everybody changes after Jin ‘gives in” to the black winged angel... except Taehyung (who IS that fallen angel) 6. BS&T is based on the book “Demian” by Herman Hesse “Blood, Sweat & Tears” is considered one of the ‘Queens' in BTS’ discography.

Consider that it’s not evil but chaos. You have to embrace chaos to have a full life. Nothing in life is straightforward. You can’t have joy without knowing pain.

ThAnks for another great reaction, this is all about getting tainted and losing innocence as we grow up and become adults, in this particular part of their careers they talked about that a lot as they we growing into adults themselves

I've watched BTS world, universe, path or whatever you want to call it, for a year and a half... including some of the extras (run, soop, voyage), I've watched concerts (live and online)... and I haven't finished to watch all their production... and as you said, the more I watch, the more I want to watch... I am a complete BTS addict, I'm 61, I don’t know HOW did I get here!! But I am completely inmerse in their world, and so grateful to know them as well as people like you... congratulations, I like your reactions, I'm not someone who can help you to discover anything in their videos but enjoy them so much, and later I can think of your conclusions... that's my way!!! Hi from Mexico, 🇲🇽🌿, i'm your fan

the video is actually related to the "Bangtan Universe" or BU which is a story arc in their albums from 2015-2018, spanning 8 albums.. huehue. sooo, theres a looooooot to digest. the use their MVs to tell this BU story so a lotof their MVs are connected to each other. This MV / lyrivs were actually inspired by Herman Hesse's book called Demian!

You did so great! 👏👏👏 I know you said you liked to look at the colors, but you really have a good understanding from just how the colors change and that is impressive to me. I haven't found any explanation video that was good for this mv and some have said not to do them since it gives away the storyline going through the video smack in the middle of it. We know that this video and album is based on Damien, so it would be best to read the book. Remember that there is no good interpretation, their music and videos are meant to have multiple layers and specters of meaning. That being said, the duality was a great catch xD With Jin looking at the picture at the beginning, you can see a black and a white doorway on either side of it, and when they are dancing there is a statue of angel and devil in the back. As I haven't read the book, I don't know whether the whole thing is meant to be anti-religious (and thus your pope ref would def fit) but it can certainly be about temptation and morality. Your point on cracking was excellent, and it fits with the Nietszhe quote in German above the mirror at the very end - “ One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star.” The book is essentially about a boy "cracking out of his egg" for the first time, leaving a sheltered life and experiencing the "real world" with all of its ugliness. From what I understood the conclusion of dealing with all the vices and getting to know the real world is that things aren't black and white and we have to accept all parts of ourselves - in spite of societal expectations. It's certainly an MV that must be watched multiple times after research and some book clubs xD P.S. I still haven't gotten the Chatroom reference (at one point when the camera moves between the two floors of the sets, there is a "Chatroom 2 3" written on the edge of it), but I know that it is a movie that mirrors the next scene, so my next assignment is to watch that haha P.P.S. If you do watch the explanation, again remember that it is just a theory, but also that not everyone agrees with those theories!
