Hi everyone,
I wanted to share the personal statement I wrote that got me selected, hoping it inspires you or gives you some guidance for writing yours. I am GKS 2024 Graduate Scholar. My university is Dongseo university, Busan.
Here are a few tips :
1. Start with a Simple Outline
Before writing your personal statement, note down a rough outline of what you want to include. It helps keep your thoughts organized and ensures you don’t miss anything important. Create a small memo.
2. Mention Your Certificates
If you submitted certificates or achievements, try to talk about a few of them in your essay. You don’t need to cover everything-just highlight the ones that really matter and explain why they’re important in your life.
3. Be Honest About Your Challenges
Don’t be afraid to write about mistakes or tough situations you’ve faced. What’s more important is how you overcome with them and what you learned from those experiences.
4. Focus on What You’ve Gained
Instead of just saying, “I took this course” or “I participated in that competition,” talk about what you learned and how it helped you grow. That’s what makes your story stand out.
5. Research the University
Write a bit about why you chose the university you’re applying to. Why is it the best fit for you? Why South Korea? Show that you’ve put thought into it.
6. Share Your Love for Korean Culture
Mention why you’re interested in Korean culture. It doesn’t have to be overly detailed, but connect it to your personal or academic goals so it feels genuine. Avoid writing about kpop/kdrama as it gives a negative impact.
7. It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
Seriously, don’t stress about making it perfect. It’s okay if there are small grammar or spelling mistakes. What really matters is that your essay is authentic and shows who you are.
That’s all from me! I hope this helps you feel a little more confident in writing your personal statement. Good luck-you’ve got this!
