On our Norwegian Encore cruise through Alaska we got up close to glaciers and wildlife sailing through Glacier Bay National Park in the raw Alaskan weather, enjoyed a sunny day in Ketchikan's historic red light district, sprinted through Victoria at night, and enjoyed Choir of Man in Encore's theater.

It's really gorgeous. The downside is that, for those that live there, it's pretty isolated, resulting in high prices, and the need to get to Seattle or Anchorage.

Cool glasses! We had the same experience with our credit card due to fraud and had to change cards - always take an alternate form of payment when you cruise! Our next Alaska cruise is in August 2024. We’ve been to Alaska before and missed Skagway due to the rock slides closing the berth where we would have docked. Hopefully our cruise in August will get us there as we are really looking forward to the White Pass Scenic Railway excursion as well as Glacier Bay. We are also looking forward to Ketchikan again as we missed Creek Street last time. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

Thanks! I change the toppers (front part) of the glasses frequently. They come in extra handy for VV sailings :-) Check them out, they're pretty inexpensive and great quality: rwrd.io/wgmjr6q?c I always have a few cards - but it'd be nice if they could store a card token using NFC (phones), as all my cards are loaded there. Now, in theory, cruise lines should still be able to charge your card even if the number changes. It just requires their payment integration gets updates from card networks when a card is updated. This is why some websites don't need you t update your card after the number of expiration changes. Whether NCL does this, I don't know, and didn't want to find out at the gangway :-) I do hope you get to Skagway, the railway was really nice. We may do a separate video talking more about it (sharing details, not just the gorgeous sites). I was glad we were able to berth there (as some ships, IIRC, had been tendering while the area was shored up). Ketchikan is such a cute place - I'd love to go back for a weekend sometime. What ship are you taking there next year?

@@CruiseHabit We are on the Discovery Princess (Inside Passage with Glacier Bay National Park). I think it was Princess Cruises that was most affected by the rock slides. But, we love Princess Cruises so we are going with them again. Come go with us. 😁🚢

Great video. Enjoying seeing all about your trip. We are about to do the same ship, same cruise. Might I ask, you only saw those two glaciers at glacier bay? I know the weather was not great. Not sure what to expect or to choose the Hubbard cruise. Glacier bay looks just breath taking. The rough seas worry me. Sea sickness is real with hubby and I…lol. Thanks because your videos have helped us so much!

Thanks so much for watching! Those are the two large glaciers, but the whole area is spectacular. To me (and those in our party), it really didn't feel like, "we're going to see these glaciers" as much as "we're going to see a spectacular place, and there are glaciers." I've been to Hubbard Glacier as well on another cruise, though it was on a *much* smaller ship, so I'm not sure how the experience would be on a large ship like this (how close you can get). Overall I'd say Glacier Bay was a bigger, "all day" gorgeous experience, and Hubbard glacier, for us, was more spectacular for the glacier itself. As for sea sickness, I'm not sure how common that first rough day is as it was our first time out of Seattle. I don't suspect it's usually what we experienced, but that's speculative on my part. On our previous AK sailing we started in SF, went to Astoria, and then to AK, and the only rough time there, on a 650 pax ship, was heading toward Astoria.

with the short time you had at Ketchikan and in Canada on the NCL. Did you feel rushed going over to Creek Street back to the Bus Stop?
@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit 7 ай бұрын
It was a bit, to be honest. It felt like this would have been less of a factor if there'd had been more busses going between the port area and town. Still we managed to have a nice first half of the day there.

How long was the ship at Glacier Bay please? Seriously considering NCL Encore! Swimming pools heated? Think late May would be a good time with more ice? Thanks!
@CruiseHabit
@CruiseHabit Ай бұрын
The pools didn't seem heated - but compared to the air temp I don't think the water temp is the issue. Comes down to if you're able to deal with the air temp - which, as a lifelong Floridian, was tricky. I actually like the cold, but not when wet :-) I'm not sure our exact "in/out" time for Glacier bay, but our time in the particularly scenic area was roughly 9:30am to 3:30pm, based on my photos.

Shame you guys got screwed out of your time in Victoria…we spent two days of our Honeymoon there in 1991 and returned in 2000…we deliberately chose an Alaska cruise itinerary (RCL’s Ovation) that allowed us a full day there so that we could revisit Butchart Gardens and the Butterfly Gardens (both just Incomparable experiences!)

We really enjoyed Butchart Gardens (and Victoria in general) when we went on Oceania Regatta. Hopefully our next return to Alaska gives us more time there :-)

The rangers that were with us for the journey boarded at about 8:30am and we were in the area until 1pm or so. We got to the largest of the glaciers, where we then turned around, at about 11am. You can see a bit more of the schedule, when the rangers were narrating and meeting folks, etc starting at page 17 below, where we put the daily programs ('Freestyle Daily') from that sailing: www.cruisehabit.com/daily-programs-menus/norwegian-encore-norwegian-cruise-lines-norwegian-encore-7-night-alaska

Not that I recall. John Hopkins is at the west finger of the bay, whereas Margerie is in the northern finger. Perhaps there was a navigational hazard or some other reason. We def didn't feel like we missed out - was gorgeous. I guess I'll just have to go back and find out for usre next year 😉
