Gladiator was explicitly sampled on Jay z’s Black Album and also for those in the know Russell Crowe was there in the studio as an honored guest for vibes while Jay and Ye recorded the Watch the Throne album. So the tie in is not completely out of left field. Ugh all that said I didn’t love it either for the trailer but I also don’t like that the movie exist at all so there’s that

While I completely agree with you and will be there opening weekend, alot of people care about first impressions which is the point of a trailer, to make you want to see it. When you make such an awful marketing choice which sets a tone that the movie may not even have you will lose people which hurts the movies potential. Why do this especially when the music choice is so awful and out of place? It doesn't fit at all and It's also becoming a normal trend with trailers. I think people are just finally pushing back and rightfully so.

I watched the trailer. It was quite long, but a great trailer for sure! I will be watching Gladiator 2 when it comes out. I'm in! What took me out of the trailer, was the music choice. Definitely out of place, I did not agree with that choice. However, it is just a trailer. It's the first trailer for what will most likely be one of the epic movies of the year. Very confident we won't hear that during the actual movie. It's a trailer.

As a marketing man myself who knows this stuff (particularly digital marketing) that song choice was a massive mistake. It makes no sense and is out of place. I can understand why the trailer got dislike bombed and also because it showed too much of the movie. You have to as a marketer understand what it can take to get people excited and when you take the winds out of the sails of some people with that music they don’t feel as hyped on the trailer after that. Look at the Alien Romulus second trailer, that’s how you do good trailer marketing.

The complaints about whether we need a sequel are silly and make little sense. The film isn't continuing the story of Maximus. It is literally just telling the story of another Gladiator who inhabits the same world that Ridley represented in the original. So, getting a big budget film about a gladiator with great actors in it and a director who has done a lot of great period stuff (Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Duel and so on) is a win. It definitely seems like a lot of people are just outraged for the sake of it, and don't actually think things through at all

Rap music is the biggest music genre in the world and it’s also unapologetically BLACK and when people see movies about ancient white people, they get butthurt when there’s anything BLACK associated with it (cough cough, Denzel). To me, a Watch The THRONE song (and that one in particular) was totally fitting to that trailer. People and their biases suck. I’ll shoot some bail to the haters though because I remember people not liking rock music in another sword and sandal movie trailer. People keep pointing out the “blood on the Colosseum doors” line but I think it’s the chorus that actually holds the most thematic weight in relation to the first movie and this one. “Human beings in a mob. What’s a mob to a king?” There are at least two scenes I can recall from Gladiator where the characters emphasize the importance of winning the favor of the mob and that the mob is Rome itself. There’s more I could say about it but that’s really the main point.

You can take and compare one by one things from the first and the second and the trailer will look worse and worse. For example the brother emperors looking like caricatures, clowns, compared to Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus who was a great villain, terrifying, creepy. Instead of having some lions in the arena, they put in a rhyno, instead of some chariots, a fleet battle (these were real but only in the first decades of the Colosseum), the lanista from the first, Proximo played by Oliver Reed was memorable in every scene, he was unbelievable... here we get Denzel, whom I love but he seems so modern. And what is he doing in the throne/senate room? Trying to take over??? And yes, THE SOUNDTRACK!! To me Gladiator 2 looks like a parody of the first, trying to outdo every aspect of the first and failing across the board.

I've always disliked out of place music in period pieces. I feel the reason that these folks who cut the trailers together and add the music are doing so at the studios requests to make it appeal to younger audiences. It's the Steve Buscemi meme "How do you do, fellow kids". Gladiator is probably considered an old movie by people in their 20's. How you draw in a younger audience who probably hasn't seen the original because it's "Old". By dropping some beats.
