The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

Hi Verowak, I’m impressed that you knew about ‘remounts’, taking a spare back up horse. I was thrilled when I saw this the first time. So many actors who have a history in swashbuckling films. Proximo played by the late Oliver Reed played Athos in two Four Musketeers films. Cassius, the guy with the eyebrows, David Hemings played Alfred the Great, the 1969 film was very similar to Braveheart with epic battles against Vikings. Tony Curran, the redhead would-be executioner of Maximus was one of the Vikings in The 13th Warrior. Highly recommend that film. The big German guy Hagen, played by Ralf Moeller, played Conan the Barbarian in the TV series. He was very good, the series not so much. Tommy Flanagan, the scarred squire Cicero was one of William Wallace’s warriors in Braveheart. Sven-Ole Thorsen, Tigris of Gaul, one of Arnie’s closest friends has appeared on almost all of Arnie’s films. When I saw this in theaters I was shocked by the war chants of the Germanic tribes in the opening scene. They used the Zulu war chants from the epic film Zulu! They may have changed that later. I will have to check that out. When I was 5 years old my father took me inside the ruins of the Roman Colisseum after dark. We snuck in after the guided tour in 1965! It was the scariest place I had ever been in at that age. When Gladiator became a hit, I was commissioned by a wargaming company to sculpt all the different types of gladiators.

One of these doctors was William Williams Keen, and he wrote in his book that Confederate wounded often showed up at hospitals with maggot infested wounds. Maggots are fly larvae. This infestation looked disgusting, but the wounds healed without infection because the maggots only ate dead tissue, which is where infection would start.

It came out a few years after Gladiator and was nominated for 10 academy awards but was far overshadowed by Lord of the Rings that year.

I watched Master and Commander on Patreon earlier this year, I'm hoping to edit it for KZbin next year, it was a pleasant surprise. I remember wanting to watch it since Pippin (Billy Boyd) was in it lol

In reality Lucilla did conspire to kill Commudus. He found out & exiled her but killed her coconspirators. He would perform in the colesium. In one show he "battled" a large group of ostriches. Guess they were easy to decapitate.....

After 24 years, I still consider this the greatest movie ever made. I've only seen it 10 times or so though.

I'm so glad you finally managed to see this. Your one of the few people who appreciate this movie for everything I do. I saw this when it came out back then. And I feel the same about it now, as I did then. I hope you do too.

10:13 - When Lucilla says "my father favours you now" I understood as at some point the Emperor chose another suitor rejected Maximus as a proper husband to Lucilla, while Maximus seemed to really liked her. That is why he looks hurt until now. I think the marriage of the real Lucilla was arranged when she was 13-14;

Oooh that makes sense! It would explain why they didn't end up together

There are few more satisfying deaths than that of Commodus. Top tier movie for sure, up there with Godfather and LotR.

When Commodus was telling Lucille that she would love him and bear him an heir. She should have said you must be joking. Lol.

Hans Zimmer’s Chevaliers De Sangreal is still my favorite but there’s about 4 other of his theatrical scores that are just a tiny bit behind it.

There is the soundtrack of Gladiator- Duduk from the north. Duduk it is a flute of Armenian shepherds. Now it is popular folk instrument in Armenia. There is the nice song of Chris De Bourgh - shadow of the mountain. It is the song of Roman soldier who returns home after the long warfare , returns to Pompeii 😢. It is not related to the movie, but I like it

Marcus Aurellius is generally considered to be one of the (relatively) "good" Emperors. Commodus was the polar opposite; if anything, Gladiator plays down his excesses.

You know your composers very good!👍 I'm impressed that someone on KZbin actually pays attention to the music like you do! I love composers too ( esp. John Williams❤, and James Horner ). GLADIATOR is a great soundtrack, and so glad you enjoyed the movie. I know you already know a lot of John Williams soundtracks, but I'm not sure if you've ever heard James Horner's soundtrack to STAR TREK: THE WRATH OF KHAN? That's a beautiful one too ( if you haven't already heard it lol ). Hint for a reaction movie if you haven't done STAR TREK yet. Hmm, am I allowed to recommend a STAR TREK reaction when I'm a STAR WARS fan? 🤭 Thanks as always for the fun reaction. Keep smiling👍🙂
