After Julius Caesar, his nephew, Augustus, became the first roman Emperor (Rome was a Republic prior to that) and "Caesar" became a title for every emperors. This "caesar", Marcus Aurelius, reigned a century later. The term even endured later : the German Emperors were "Kaiser" and the Russian emperor was a "Tsar" which both comes from it.

Lucilla and Maximus had a history that pre-dated the spouses. It's made clear, in all the dialogue. I'm always amazed when Reactors get offended at the kiss.... 38:10 With all the evil and killing in this film, ...a kiss? She says "I have felt alone all my life. Except with you." Meaning he was the love of her life! In a jail cell, both of them in a desperate situation, with the music....To me it's the most beautiful moment in the entire movie

The short roman sword is called a "gladius". In reality Commodus was emperor for about 15 years and in the end he got assassinated by Narcissus, a wrestler/gladiator who trained him for his choreographed appearances in the Colosseum. The real story could have been just as good as this for a movie.

I don't think anyone has commented on this yet, so: I do not think the slave traders knew they had a general. They just found a wounded soldier in a road. They knew he was a legionaire (and precisely which Legion) because he had a tatoo on his arm, but they must have thought he was a deserter. So their options were: a) Turn him to the authorities and probably have him executed, for no gain, or; b) Take him to a region far away from central government and sell him to a gladiator trainer (Proximus) for a hefty price. And it was a hefty price, because the tatoo warrantied he already knew how to fight. Remember how more than half of the slave batch didn't make it through the first fight? Most of them were warm bodies for the meat grinder. Thought the fact that Proximus put both Maximus and the big burly guy in the same batch means the other team was composed of old, mediocre gladiators who were being actively "managed out".

39:40 The Kid said to Commodus that he wanted to be just like Maximus ''The savior of Rome''. Commodus then asked him ''who told you that''? Obviously, the innocent kid probably said that he heard his mother say that (probably overheard her conversations with the other plotters). So because of that, Commodus then knew that his sister was against him, it was just a matter of knowing how exactly his sister was against him...
@Pamtroy

For the record, yes, Emperor Commudus was truly a nut who fought gladiators, probably after hobbling them as he does Maximus. And yes, he was killed by a slave, but not during combat. He was apparently strangled in his bath by his trainer Narcissus. By that time I'm pretty sure his sister, Livilla, had already been killed for conspiring against him.

Answer: No that is not ‘Julius Caesar’. Description/details: This movie takes place during the last days of Emperor ‘Marcus Aurelius’, and the beginning of his son’s ‘Commodus’ reign in around 181AD. Julius Caesar died in 44BC. However, his legacy was so great that Roman emperors were still using the title “Caesar” by the time of M. Aurelius.

The thing was, when people enlisted in the Roman army, they had a mandatory service of 25 years. If you survived, you basically received a pension at the end, along with a small plot of land and a house. Also, at the beginning, the battle involved Germanic and Celtic tribes that were spread out throughout Europe, including Ireland, my home. They referred to all tribes they came across in Europe as either Germanic or Gauls, also known as Celts. Sure, they conquered most of the world, but they didn't conquer Ireland. They did try once; they sent a scout or possibly a messenger, but he never returned. The same happened in Scotland; they sent a small party to check it out, I guess, but they never returned either. So, they built a massive wall. 😂😂
@justonecornetto80
@justonecornetto80 2 ай бұрын
They didn't conquer Ireland because because after the Brythonic Celts had given them so many headaches, it was decided to consolidate then send the legions to the legions to reinforce the empire's borders from the Germanic tribes. Hence why Hadrian's wall was built.

The last couple scenes of Proximo, letting Maximus and the slaves free, and shadows and dust before being killed were body doubles and cgi. The actor Oliver Reed died before his scenes were finished. A notorious heavy drinker he promised Ridley Scott to keep down while filming, so he just got drunk on the weekends as a loophole. One Sunday morning he challenged a group of British sailors who’s destroyer was docked in Malta to a drinking challenge, had some drinks, reportedly (8 pints of German lager, a dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of whiskey, and a few shots of Hennessy) beat five young sailors in arm wrestling, said he didn’t feel well, and collapsed dying of a massive heart attack. The bar owner still has his tab. OG.

The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

Great reaction, guys! If I wasn’t already subbed this is the one that would have gotten me clicking that button. Fun fact about the Roman Empire: like everyone else has explained, Caesar became a title inspired from Julius Caesar for the emperors of Rome. Augustus, his nephew and the first Roman Emperor, was adamant about the position not being titled as “King”. He wanted to give the impression that the Caesar/Emperor was a member of the public and not some special bloodline. Throughout Imperial Roman history, the position of Emperor was never hereditary. While the Emperors mostly picked their successor from their family members, bloodline heirs were never made into law. Roman Emperors could literally pick anyone they wanted. Roman Emperors were either picked by their predecessors or put in power by the senate or the Praetorian Guard. Sometimes, there was more than one emperor at the same time as co-rulers. So Maximus as a general favored by Marcus Aurelius being chosen to be his successor was probably mostly a surprise only to Maximus himself and to Commodus. The only thing the Senate might have grumbled about would have been Maximus being from a Roman province (Spain) and not Rome itself (which meant he was technically a lower class than native Roman patricians). It’s actually a bit surprising that for all Commodus hated Maximus and was jealous of him, he never once said or even implied that Maximus was inferior to him because of his provincial origins. Anyway, in real life, Maximus didn’t exist though he seems to be partly based on an amalgamation of different historical figures. Marcus Aurelius named Commodus co-ruler and seemed to have had a good relationship with him. Lucilla plotted to kill Commodus but failed which led to Lucilla and her daughter being exiled then executed. Commodus ruled for 12 years before being assassinated in the bath by his wrestling instructor (and possible gladiator) called Narcissus. He was not a popular emperor (though he didn’t seem to be as evil and cruel as his movie counterpart) and his reign is often pointed to as the start of the downfall of the Roman Empire.

FUN FACTS: the character of Maximus is fictional, however some the other characters around him are based on real people. The real life Lucilla(the sister) really did attempt to assassinate the real Commodus with the help of a few senators, but they failed. Lucilla & the other conspirators were exiled, then excuted shortly after. Also, the real Lucilla was the one who had an incestuous infatuation, not Commodus. The real life Commodus was strangled to death while bathing

Maximus is not a fictional character. Read Meditations by Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius was played by the first Dumbledore, yes (Richard Harris). Harris appeared in the first two HP films, but later on died. Therefore, Michael Gambon continued playing Dumbledore in the rest of HP saga. Also, Richard Harris, had many stories of carousing and escapades with Peter O´Toole (and also an incident with the aforementioned Oliver Reed)

Most times gladiators didn't actually fight to the death. They would fight and maybe get a couple of cuts then the match would be over. Having them duel to the death all the time would have them run through a share of gladiators real quick. That wasn't very cost effective and would be a waste on investment for folks like Proximo.

The cost for the Colosseum was actually free, people spent their money on food and betting.

It wasn't TOTALLY cut. The look was still on their face and we heard his name and saw Commodus' reaction etc. It's alright. They are good reactors.

No, that is Emperor Marcus Aurelius, he was NOT a King. No Roman Emperor was ever a king. Roman emperors ruled a massive empire, covering literally hundreds of different regions, and peoples, not just his own country. Julius Caesar was never emperor, he was given dictator powers by the Senate until he was assassinated. After his death, his will adopted Octavian (Later Augustus Caesar) as his heir. Augustus won a big civil war and eventually became the first Emperor. After that, the Emperor was referred to as Caesar until maybe a 100 years later when the emperor were referred to as Augustus. The only time Rome had Kings was when it was first founded from the mid 700s BC until the mid 500BC. After that, there were no Roman Kings and the Rome was ruled by the Senate until Augustus Caesar became emperor in in 27BC.

Marcus Aurelius was not a bad father. Commodus is a vile person. I read a little about Commodus in the past and he is rated as one of the most self indulgent, dim witted oaf, sick, cruel and sadistic emperor back in the days in Rome. I tried to do more research about him and didn’t see anything positive about him.

Marcus Ulpius Traianus and Publius Aelius Hadrianus (both from Hispania, actual Spain), were the best and greatest emperors of the Roman Empire. Marcus Aurelius was a great one, probably the most cultured and profound, having his written testimonies as reliable proof.

Very questionable.... I don't see how Hadrian can be better than let's say Constantine and bunch of other emperors (including of course Octavian)
