Katelyn Ohashi story makes me feel so emotional every time I hear it. I was a competitive swimmer and started when I was very young as a way to cope with my father's death as a child. I loved it until I didn't because it became expected to be great. Whenever I didn't live up to those expectations I would feel like such a failure. I can't imagine ever being good to be in serious competitions so to listen to her story just crushes me. Getting injured and being forced to quit the spot was an incredible feeling but also a huge loss. Something that I had loved and then hated for so long was just gone. I am able to appreciate swimming more now but will never have that love for it like when I first began.

Similarly, I've not been involved in gymnastics - my background is in dance and martial arts - but I appreciate the sport for its athleticism and grace and admire these girls who are gymnasts. The determination to train hard and do one's best, and also to push through injuries, is something most dancers can relate to although thankfully there's not been someone like Nassar or the Karolyis in dancing.

It's so strange to be able to recognize the US gymnasts who is speaking based solely off their voice, how many interviews and videos did I watch to get to this point. I trained as a gymnast back in late 60's and early 70's, mostly because I loved the sport and not so much because I had ambitions to go pro. I started my training way too late (I was 13-14 yrs old) and I knew was too tall (5'-8"), but I did my best and while I did compete, I never did well in competition. Not doing well in competition didn't really matter much to me, I just loved more than anything else the strength and flexibility of my body, until I set my left foot wrong for splits and ending up tearing cartilage in my left hip joint. That was the end of my gymnastics and now, 50 years later, I have hip surgery scheduled for repair of the torn cartilage which has been injured many times since the original injury 50 years ago. But truth be told, it's a price I would pay again in a heartbeat. There is something just so wonderful about feeling the strength and flexibility of one's body that only gymnastics can bring to you...

We constantly talk about the coaches, however there is no mention of the parents. You kids spine is all out of wack and you dont do anything? Your kid looks miserable all the time and you never question what is going on in their practices? The coaches are absolutely to blame but these parents turn their heads to the mental abuse these women went through.
@f.watson99334 жыл бұрын
The parent’s do not commonly know because the girls 1. do not know how bad they are themselves and 2. do not tell them. Most gyms do not allow parents to watch team practices for a variety of good reasons though it opens the doors for some bad situations. I promise you that the mass majority of parents of these athletes are in no way turning their heads to the abuse that has occurred. This is a cultural shift that is taking place, but like any change in cultural norms, it will take time. Do not set blame on people about things you do not know or understand. I was a gymnasts in a gym that bordered on abusive for me, was abusive to others I know of, but because of my parents instilling the lessons and sense of self that I have plus what I learned in that very gym, I was able to leave before things went to far. It still side swiped my family to see what had happened. I had covered it up because I didn’t understand it. That is extremely common in any high level sport, athlete, and in mental health as well. Look at how many abused persons go back to their abusers. Look at how many abused children cover for their abusive parents. It is all the same psychological loop.

I know this is about to sound macabre but as far as USA Gymnastics is concerned when these girls compete at the elite level their bodies are the property of USA Gymnastics I’m not saying it’s right, or that it’s okay. I’m disgusted by that. But it’s true
@Sunflowers91913 жыл бұрын
Yes I genuinely don’t get it either, also if I am not allowed in the gym or drop my kid of at camp to see how things go on there I like not bring them there as long as they are a minor.

@@saruhhhh I think it's worth mentioning, because this documentary itself makes no mention of that outside of "oh yeah her back was really messed up." They don't delve into ANY of the abuse or neglect in this video, and so mentioning it is worthwhile, in my opinion. The sport has had enough glamorization and we can't let up on the Truth dispensing just because it's an unpleasant subject. You ask"Why would you say that?" Well, because it's fact and needs to be discussed. Miss Moxie said: "I'm not saying its right, or that it's okay..." but it's true. And truth hurts and shouldn't be hidden away just because it's unpleasant. I think that's why she said it.

We watch all the gymnastic championships and worlds and Olympics every time they come on ♥️my favorite tradition every year.

it's insane how young top level gymnasts have to be to execute all their advanced skills. I know most 13-17yos couldn't handle the pressure and then if you do make it, then your career is basically over by 25 at the latest but you'll probably retire sooner bc of an injury which could be catastrophic. it's crazy as I think agreeable teenage girls take on gymnastics with a post career plan bc they're so dedicated to their sport.

In our schools back in the early 80’s we had the same mats that the wrestlers used with no type of bounce at all and I had shin splints that I can still feel at age 50 not to mention the arthritis throughout my entire body. It was so fun but we had no coaches who could spot us, no foam pits to practice moves on.. essentially nothing and on our own. It’s amazing to see the changes in the equipment alone and I wish I could’ve known what it was like to tumble on the modern equipment.
