There has been much recent press comment violence, in Glasgow and the reasons for it. Llew Gardner looks at the world of the new estates and old, demolished, slums through the eyes of three of these teenage gangs, the Shamrock, the Cumbie and the Spur. How can their aggressions, insecurity, and the need to belong to something be met?

Sink schemes bollocks, so bad middle of nowhere, you seen how far Easterhouse is from Glasgow? I grew up in the 60's in first Easterhouse and then Garthamlock. I remember vividly the day Frankie Vaughan came to my school and we all gathered in the Assembly Hall to hear him speak. I always had a soft spot for him for trying to do his best for Easterhouse. But I support the views of Hugh Brown who I remember well. It was really all about housing at that time. My family moved from a single end in Govan to a 4 apartment with a bathroom and garden in Easterhouse. That really was like paradise. I agree with the Education official - I got a great education at the Bennie and the Lennie. The teachers, from Miss Jones, Reception teacher at the Bennie, to Gerrie McCrorie, History teacher at the Lennie were mostly wonderful people and dedicated teachers. I agree also with the Police Convenor. Most kids were decent but the gang members spoiled it for all. They were scum. No excuses stand up to scrutiny. I stayed away from gangs but I got my nose broken by one thug that summer of 68. A few months later, one of my classmates, who also had nothing to do with the gangs was out walking with his pal when he was "jumped". His pal escaped but he was kicked to death. It is sickening to see the semi-literate mouthings of idiots in the comments here as if this was something to be proud of. They were scum then and, quite obviously, still scum now, 60 years on. Quite a feat that. Getting through 60 years without ever growing up, learning the difference between right or wrong or understanding what individual responsibility means.
