There has been much recent press comment violence, in Glasgow and the reasons for it. Llew Gardner looks at the world of the new estates and old, demolished, slums through the eyes of three of these teenage gangs, the Shamrock, the Cumbie and the Spur. How can their aggressions, insecurity, and the need to belong to something be met?
‘THIS WEEK’ looks at the constructive attempts of three different approaches, the local authority, the one man, one shot crusade of Frankie Vaughan and the unrelenting efforts of a Glasgow Minister the Rev. John Webster.

I love how the copper says that’s a ridiculous accusation that boys from one area couldn’t go into an other lmao I grew up in the early naughtiest and couldn’t leave my area without at least a couple of pals never mind back then 😂

Exactly it was middle class planners that created it and shipped people that they thought would sort them out, it was Glasgow Corporation that caused it OK? Sink schemes bollocks, so bad middle of nowhere, you seen how far Easterhouse is from Glasgow? Look at Edinburgh put the real Edinburgh people out into the suburbs, the scummy flats Wester Hailes that is the Scottish Bourgeois answer, those scum caused it, absolutely, Glasgow the same, patronising, socialisation and indoctrination! Totally, numbers, not people! Who is that horrible Bourgeois, or pseudo-bourgeois woman? Fake! She isn't even Uni educated!

The gang names sound ridiculous. These gangs are exactly why it's so important to create extra curricular activities for young adults as well as put restrictions on alcohol.

Not from anywhere near Glasgow, or Scotland for that matter. Webster comes over as a thoroughly decent individual with great empathy. His wise words still resonate some 55 years later.

I grew up in the 60's in first Easterhouse and then Garthamlock. I remember vividly the day Frankie Vaughan came to my school and we all gathered in the Assembly Hall to hear him speak. I always had a soft spot for him for trying to do his best for Easterhouse. But I support the views of Hugh Brown who I remember well. It was really all about housing at that time. My family moved from a single end in Govan to a 4 apartment with a bathroom and garden in Easterhouse. That really was like paradise. I agree with the Education official - I got a great education at the Bennie and the Lennie. The teachers, from Miss Jones, Reception teacher at the Bennie, to Gerrie McCrorie, History teacher at the Lennie were mostly wonderful people and dedicated teachers. I agree also with the Police Convenor. Most kids were decent but the gang members spoiled it for all. They were scum. No excuses stand up to scrutiny. I stayed away from gangs but I got my nose broken by one thug that summer of 68. A few months later, one of my classmates, who also had nothing to do with the gangs was out walking with his pal when he was "jumped". His pal escaped but he was kicked to death. It is sickening to see the semi-literate mouthings of idiots in the comments here as if this was something to be proud of. They were scum then and, quite obviously, still scum now, 60 years on. Quite a feat that. Getting through 60 years without ever growing up, learning the difference between right or wrong or understanding what individual responsibility means.

That guy with the white hair, the polis guy he got big in Strathclyde Polis my da hated him, I'm from North Lanarkshire and yes my da hit a police van with a stolen lorry at Powburn years before this early 60s Uddingston, yeah became part of Glasgow, it was all over! London as well, UK was rife with crime stupid things! Not major crime! But Glasgow was taken appart by middle class planners no one asked the population it was Middle class architects that decide they created the problem and the people were blamed! Shit housing in the middle of Nowhere! Absolutely bollocks! Wrong attitude from the elite again! We were all wrong, guess what we got to University some of us ! Sod Frankie Vaughan!
