Glass artist Daryl Smith makes a functional Space Needle

Ever since Washington state legalized recreational cannabis in 2012, the demand for high end glass to smoke it with has increased dramatically. Historically, most of that glass has been borosilicate, made on a torch or lathe, but a few furnace glass artists are stepping up to meet the demands of discerning collectors.
Daryl Smith has been creating custom one-of-a-kind bongs for enthusiasts for the last year or so. Here we see him working on a functional Space Needle. He is working at Rainer Glass studio in the Georgetown neighborhood of Seattle. Daryl is assisted by Mary Quinn, studio owner Ryan Blythe, Aaron Mathews and Alonna Buchemier. Daryl has a bunch of cool projects in the works, so check him out on Instagram at @glass_smith.

Heh. Same, bud. I got a little past halfway and was still thinking "functioning" how? Then _light dawned on marblehead_ as the saying goes and checked the description to be sure.

Another job done with superior distinction. Every time he's better, more refined. He's a fantastic artist. The work glass should be one of the hardest things to do, it makes it seem easy. By the way, the bongo was really cool... 😉

Around 13 minutes in I realised what "functional" meant. At first I thought it looked a bit like a tree. Now I see it's for smoking those trees 😎

That is alchemy right there. Fantastic demonstration. Sculpting and welding glass with a blow torch like that really impressed me a lot. I've worked with glass hot and cold, but only slumped in a kiln. But as a bronze caster and chaser I get it on e totally new level. Would love to have a great big lung full off of that beauty. Well done team.

How artists price their pieces lots of times has little to do with how long it took to make (sometimes it does, but...). How many years of experience, how much propane, the price of various glasses (colors & stuff) or tools, the odd chance of something turning out really nicely, difficulty, current cash needs, current market demand for their work, and how much the artist is really willing to part with the piece (and to whom) can all influence price. It's art, it's not an hourly-wage job, or a factory item. If you want to buy a specific piece, pay the piece and the artist a chunk of respect and ask about it specifically.
