This was great info. I had planned to stay out there at Glass Butte this summer during our overland trip so this gave me some great first hand knowledge of the campgrounds that are there. Thanks for the info!

Where he showed the big camp spot, head straight further down that road, turn right at the fence.... whole mountain of Mahogany obsidian, large pieces.

@@tomlauritzen9522 Oooohhhh nice. Any good mines out there to explore? I've never driven around Glass Butte. Anything worth filming?

@@NorthwestBronco I was on my way from Tigard to Moab and just stopped in the afternoon, picked up some rocks and camped overnight. Didn't get to explore.

The glass butte area is one of my favorites. Especially where the old cinnabar mines are.

Glass buttes is a great spot. Man, wish I had some time for some camping and exploring it’s been too long. After Fire academy is over I plan on getting back out there!

I need to explore more at Glass Butte. I've only used it as a camp spot and I love it. What academy are you going through?

Camas/Washougal fire over here in Washington. It’s volunteer but been a life long dream to make it a career. Starting young at the age of 36! Haha. That’s a great sticker you found 😂

@@SeanStewart88 Well you picked the right time to get started. I'd recommend testing for career departments. There's a weird shortage of people who want to work now a days! Lot's of opportunities right now. My volunteer days were some of the best days of my life. Loved it!

Is the absiden rock like glass? With it all over do you have to avoid it with the bronco so you don't cut the tires?
@NorthwestBronco
@NorthwestBronco 8 ай бұрын
It can be sharp. But the roads are clear of it (for the most part) I've been there a bunch of times and have never had a problem. Hope this helps!

I've rockhounded out there for years. It is exactly volcanic glass. The different colors come from impurities in the silica rich lava that it forms from. There are some rare flows that are nearly pure and are nicely transparent just like man made glass. Most is the classic black from magnetite and/or magnesium impurities. BLM has done a lot of work on the main roads in the complex in the last few years, so if you stick to them you don't drive over nearly that much obsidian anymore. But yeah, it is a risk to tires. Highly recommended to not be out there without either a spare vehicle or a spare tire. (I've never had an issue and have driven over road beds of nearly 100% obsidian -- go go luck)

with all that obsidian, there were clearly dragons around! it's the only logical conclusion for all that "dragon glass" 🤣
