You're not talking to it right. Engines don't respond to "hmmm.." and "that's interesting." They respond to "come on baby, come on…you can do it." You can try threats of violence and profanity as well, but wheedling is usually the best approach. Engines like emotional engagement.

Fortunately, it's been a long time since I had an engine that was hard starting. Except for my snowblower. First start of the season is a bear. I actually had to use the electric start this year. It was just being petulant. But I had to get it running as I'm getting too old and creaky to shovel out my driveway so after starting with "Come on, you can do it. It's not so bad. This is what you were made for, you love this stuff." I went to "Come on! You have fuel, good spark, nice brisk air; what is it you want from me?" to "Okay, baby, I see how it is. You see this cord? Yessss, you DO, don't you?! That's right baby, I'm gonna give you the juice. Mr. Zappy will make you happy!"

Robert Gift where I used to work they had optical access engines. some with Windows in the cylinder walls or heads, some with special pistons that used mirrors and glass piston tops. both gas and diesel versions and they had one that had a full glass cylinder bore. extremely thick fused silica/quartz glass. that one was gas only. took his to warm it up, you could run for a few minutes then hours to cool down again. useful though!

The head really looks good on there. The clarity is outstanding. I am excited to see it running. I was just wondering though, why you chose to run on propane. I know that it has less carbon output, but it runs hotter than gasoline. Most glass demonstration engines that I have seen, run on alcohol, both for cleanliness, and the fact that it runs significantly cooler than gasoline. You could just re jet a carburetor to run on alcohol, and have a much simpler setup. You might have to add something to brighten the flame though, for visibility in daylight. The visibility issue is definitely a positive to running propane. If you find that the plexi gets damaged quickly, you may want to give alcohol a try.
@805ROADKING8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bud!! We just like Propane!!☺
@scotty23078 жыл бұрын
Well, propane does have a lot to offer. My understanding is that switching a new engine over to propane will often double it's service life.
@Krankie_V8 жыл бұрын
Scott M seems to me you could get a lower rpm and use less compression with a gaseous fuel like propane
@scotty23078 жыл бұрын
Possible. I think that alcohol is used for demonstration engines because it burns much cooler.
@Krankie_V8 жыл бұрын
Scott M true, but also combustion temps will decrease with less compression also

Fantastic idea! Very educational! to see that flame flash over with the sparking plug is amazing. Briggs/Stratton considered a very good lawnmower engine here in the UK. An inch thick of glass is a great idea. Once those hold down bolts get warm they will expand, but the glass won't; do you expect some leakage over prolonged runs? Woul dbe interested to see this run for an extended period!

I work in the propane business, that's a fisher 200 series reg or a clone, I would be happy to help with questions on the gas side. Also propane does not have a lot of water in it in most cases, if you burn a little bit of fuel in a cold engine the water vapor made in combustion will condense. Just like a car engine on a cold start will dribble water out of the exhaust
@volvo098 жыл бұрын
very nice, getting closer! I've seen a couple instances of a see through flathead, but none had the all around refinement of this. the steps you guys have taken to lower compression and slow down the combustion process are a first for me. any other attempt I've seen still ran at or over 1k rpm.... a blur

Hey there, the clear head looks awesome ! By the way, that water vapor you where talking about at 2:35 is steam getting produced by the combustion of the propane: propane is made up of carbon and hydrogen, when it combusts it reacts with oxygen. therefore CO2 and H2O (water) is formed. Due to the heat of the combustion it becomes steam

Why not just stick that head on a more modern Briggs and use the original flywheel and electronic ignition coil, would be a lot easier and more reliable?! Also It looks like you're trying to use Propane as a source of fuel with no carburetor to regulate the fuel air mixture which is not going to help the situation if your ultimate goal is to get the thing running :( Not trying to hate but they put carburetors on petrol motors for a reason even propane powered ones! With all that being said best of luck on getting it running and I will be looking forward to the video :)

i cant do things the hard way anymore ,, if that were me i would have just used an electric motor to turn it over instead of a rope ,, i cant afford to use up what little energy i have left ,, the glass head is pretty cool

Even better, you can just use a high speed electric drill with the right size socket attachment to turn the flywheel directly. This is how I used to start my Go Cart as a kid, and I'm pretty sure it was a Briggs and Stratton motor. I was a lazy little fucker.

will ,, yes i have also did it that way ,, its just the direct force of the drill was a bit of a jar on my hands and this is the reason i mostly used a belt driven electric motor , i could slowly apply tension threw the belt ,, as for you being lazy , no not lazy , smart , work smart not hard ,, kinda like the governmentt does , they work smart and let all us slaves do the grunt work ,,
