As a veteran of the US Army (1991-2013) and longtime anime fan, I have never been so moved as I was with this show. I so hope this program gets more promotion as not just a good anime, but as a way to teach family and friends of a member of the military of the changes they will encounter; covering both Violets’ struggle with being an amputee and her mental health issues. The episode that touched me the most was the one with the veteran who need a crutch to get around. Seeing a character dealing with both mobility issues and Survivor's remorse brought be back to when I was medically retired from the Army. Seeing Violet go from being this cold and emotionless person to someone, who is able to open up and share her feeling, reflects how many come to cope with the pain of things seen and actions taken in deployments across the globe. And yes, I too was brought to tears many times.

killerqueen2000 "it did not do anything special whatsoever" You're joking right? One of the best things about this show is how much it can get you to care about these side characters in such a short time frame. I actually cried watching episode 10, if you didn't feel anything for these characters then I don't really know what to say to you. Also the audiovisual presentation in this show is the best it's ever been, this show looks and sounds incredible. It also pushes the boundaries of what TV animation can do. For example the hand drawn mechanical animation in episode 2 that looks so stunningly beautiful is a result of the crazy amount of detail in the frames as well as the complexity that the shading is drawn with, you don't even get to see this kind of animation in high budget movies, there are also only a handful of animators left in the industry with the talent to animate something like that. The shading here is more complex than in famous movies like Patlabor. I don't know how people can take anime like this for granted especially with all the cheap poorly produced shit that airs these days.

Episode 10 hit me close to home, I lost my mom in 2013. She died of kidney failure, at the time I didn't realize the severity of the situation was just like Ann and I was just still a being a little brat that didn't really care. Because being 13, death seems surreal it seems distant. But reality hits and I was soo shocked that I didn't know what to feel. I didn't cry and that was one of my biggest regret of my life. And episode 10 reminded me of a week before my mother died, She was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and wanted to talk to me alone. There, she was breathing through a tube that entered her mouth. She wanted to talk to me alone, she was mumbling and I can't understand what my mom was saying. Yet the thing that I hated myself the most is that I didn't even try to understand. I was too focused on my own childhood world. Skipping forward to 2018 my mom's death was in the past yet after watching episode 10 I was sent back to that ICU room with me and my mom. Remembering that made me cry my ass off, I cried because I hated my behavior was to my mom prior to her death. I was a piece of crap. And I screamed and cried "I'm sorry mom!". And now I am always haunted by that moment. By the message that my mom tried to tell. I regretted it so much because I neglected my mother's last words. Now, I'm trying to be the best person I can be for my mom. To All of y'all who is still blessed with a mother, cherish your time with her so you wont have any regrets that I had!

I rip on it for being experimental animation that looks sloppy and lazy! The story is just lame whoa! I have this feel bad for me! I BET IF THIS WASN'T DUBBED NONE OF YOU WOULD HAVE EVER SEEN THIS!!!
@jonson8566 жыл бұрын
This year there had been a lot of good shows. If Evergarden came out a different time they could have had a shot a #1 show at the time. I dont see whats experimental about the show. Single episode stories were a thing back then, instead of story arcs. I have yet to see a show as beautifully drawn as this. I bet many of us watch MHA, its well animated and the important scenes were done amazingly. Evergarden had no badly drawn scenes. I havent seen one scene in which the production cut corners. On top of that KyoAni are masters in putting in a lot of movement and motion into the characters, so they dont need to say something all the time. Just like in real life, like 30% of what we are saying is conveyed via body language, we are honest, are we contradictive, attracted, defensive, aggressive etc. But thats KyoAnis modus of operandi, so this isnt experimental as well. Violets character seems bland, well she is supposed to be an emotionless person who slowly becomes "human". Though her character developed quite a lot it still seems like just a little achievement, which opens her up for more character progression and more story telling. I think this is totally fine and interesting. Character development isnt experimental or new, so... If i had to criticise KyoAni then its because they seem to be uninnovative. What they touch upon they master it to a degree never seen before, but they dont invent something new. The only thing they stood out for the most was K-On (one of my all time favourites), they more or less invented or reinvented Moe, which made the show so successful. I think i will watch Violet Evergarden one more time this month before my Netflix subscription ends. Its a bit hard to digest, but its good. Very good.
@getoutofmyface6 жыл бұрын
I'm getting the vibe that you are just trolling, because Violet Evergarden's animation is anything but 'sloppy and lazy' and anyone with a set of eyes can see that. An honest criticism would be more along the lines of 'the protagonist is boring' or 'the ending is pretty weak', rather than go after probably the best aspect of the series.
@TheSaharay16 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't like it bc it was too overhyped for me. Like since the preview for it came out way back when with Death Billiards and Little Witch Academia, "how pretty" it was was all everyone talked about for years until it actually aired. And it since that little preview didn't actually show anything that would draw me in with its visuals like a plot hook, it just came off as more style than substance to me. And made me disappointed so many people overlooked such good shows for something that was little more than a glittering crystal in my eyes.

This show is an absolute masterpiece in my opinion. It is incredibly heartfelt and incredibly well paced in the way it progresses Violet's character. The way she discovers in each episode a different aspect of love and what it is and means is absolutely captivating. The best shows give you a reason to care about the central characters without spelling out for you every little thing about them. Violet's progression feels natural and deliberate to the point where when she experiences significant moments of realization or loss, you understand immediately how she got to that point. I love this show unabashedly so and want as many people to watch it as possible. It was that profoundly moving for me.
@markopusic82582 жыл бұрын
I fully support this. I have some gripes with the show, especially the plot as it can get silly at times (you know, getting 2 fully functional prosthetic arms in a world mirroring something like the WW1 period, and she's the only person to ever get prosthetics), but Violet's journey as a character is some of the most gripping writing I have seen in my short life. The meticulous care put in each episode to slowly but surely build her understanding of emotions, both from others and herself, to finally come to terms with her own trauma and move on. It's a powerful and masterfully paced character arc.

The best anime is one you can put in the DVD player and watch with the family instead of a marvel movie or Lord of the rings. One you can finish watching and know, any detractors of anime in the family can't really say anything bad about what was just watched. The best kind of anime is anime that people have to admit there is something extra to and honestly can't say they didn't walk away with something after watching. This is one of those anime. It's one that if there was more like it in the industry, on movie night, normie people would ask "(insert name) what shows do you have we could watch?"

I didn't go into VE expecting it to be a very emotional, heart string pulling sort of story. I had no expectations except what I was left with reading the synopsis on Netflix for the show. I thought it was going to be more of a action-y sort of story line with the 'deadpan' character humor I tend to enjoy. That said I was very impressed despite my initial thought of what the anime would be. However; going into shows like VE I usually have to do consciously. I ended up disappointed and on several occasions bored out of my mind because of the mindset I went into the show with. I ended up putting it down and walking away from it for a month before I finished it. I cried a lot, and the show itself was gorgeous. Sure everything was insanely predictable after the first few minutes of each episode, but it wasn't about the ending, it was about how you got there. I do NOT believe VE is for everyone, but I do believe for those that can enjoy it; it is masterful in it's execution.
@zichenglong69926 жыл бұрын
Personally I think more people should see your last few statements (just personal opinion, of course). This show is definitely one that focuses on the execution of the story instead of the story itself, and I think that's intentional. I think it's kind of like Your Name in this sense: the whole experience is supposed to be what is good, visual and audio being part of it. If one wants a creative story, then this is definitely not the one to watch (though I feel like a creative story is practically impossible for almost any media at this point…)

I absolutely loved this show. It's astoundingly gorgeous, every single episode of this TV show looks like a movie and it's fantastic. If it was just Violet meeting and helping a new random person each episode, I'd watch a hundred episodes of that. Unfortunately, the whole ending thing just got... strange. It wasn't the worst thing ever, but it also felt very weird. Living weapon girls who discover humanity are my ultra-bag, I'll never tire of it ever. I loved Violet and her personality, and watching her, like, 'grow less numb' over time. In fact, pretty quickly, once she's not in literal hell every day, she starts to get feeling back, like coming in from the cold and warming up by the fire. Erika Harlacher voicing her didn't hurt one bit, either. Kayaday....

About the review, I'm glad you mentioned the difference in Violet's tone between Japanese and English dubs. I can for the life of me not stand her English voice as it seems too nuanced (and sometimes downright dramaticized) for a girl who is supposed to be emotionless. Nothing against the voice actress, seems like quality work, it just really rubbed me the wrong way. Checking out both versions definitely is a good idea though, the difference is pretty drastic.

she's not emotionless from the start though, she always had them from the start, Violet herself said so in episode 13, but she just didnt know much about those emotions because she was made to suppress them like every other soldier in the army. Maybe it was intended to be nuanced at certain times because she was showing emotions that she didnt know about, like how she showed determination with her tone when telling Erica that she really wanted to be a doll even though it does not suit her

I’ve waited for this review for so long now. Violet Evergarden is one of my top 10 favorite anime’s now. I went into the show intrigued, but I came out on the other side awestruck, floored by everything that the show encompasses, and saddened by the fact that it was over. It’s by far one of the most incredible shows to date and deserves the highest ratings by everyone. I’m planning on rewatching it subbed soon.

I liked "A place further than the universe" and "Violet Evergarden" the same for most of their run. Evergarden's end was a little bit of a letdown, while apfttu had an almost perfect ending. That's why Evergarden isn't a contender for anime of the year, because apfttu aired.

Violet's character development is extremely underrated because it is a master class of subtlety. Let's just look at some of her improvements: recognizes her own emotions, empathizes with others, develops self-worth, overcomes loss, and deals with her guilt. After all that she goes through she is able to find a degree of peace and meaning. Not only that, but the way she carries herself and the intent in her eyes has been given consideration with the wonderful animation. I love this show.

What I like the most about this anime is how realistic they deal with post-war trauma, how a soldier like Violet needs to adapt after the war ended, and deal with the scars that the war caused and even she caused to others, hell, she even reject the notion of blindly following orders at the end of the season, and don't want to kill anyone anymore, she stop being a drone and become a fully realise person at the end.

TheDarkM I have to say that although I enjoyed it, it has some arcs in the story that are fkn boring, which didn't happen with violet evergarden
@theblackreaper43956 жыл бұрын
Yeah...I liked Mahoutsukai No Yome a lot. Even though Violet Evergarden is a masterpiece, in a way or two, I like The Ancient Magus Bride better. First is simple because it uses a few more emotions than just sadness. There isn't a moment in Violet Evergarden where you are happy, at least for me. The journey is amazing, but honestly, it's too depressing...They could've added or two contrary scenes to change the mood
@madengineerkyouma6 жыл бұрын
The Black Reaper I don't agree on Violet Evergarden being a masterpiece, but I agree about Magus Bride. I also think that Violet Evergarden didn't use it's beautiful artstyle at his fullest while Magus Bride did, since it added a strong contrast with the more horrific scenes such as Elias' transformation against -Cartaphilus- Joseph

I fell in love with this show. It really touched me on a personal level. I've watched many shows and movies, read many books, and follow many stories in general. But Violet Evergarden is different, it's.... special. This show is almost perfect in every way (my opinion ofc). This show gave something that many others cannot, and i don't exactly know what it is. The animation is georgeous, every frame feels like a painting; the music is incredible and ethereal, it's memorable and emotional; and so on and so forth. The characters in this show, i miss all of them. Hodgins, Cattleya, Iris, Erica, Princess Charlotte, Oscar, Leon, Ann, Gilbert, hell even Deitfried too. Every characters in this show presents such quality, and i am amazed. And then Violet, ah Violet... I've never emotionally attached to character as much as i did with Violet. It's so interesting to see her witness other people'a stories, understand them and their emotions from it. From Princess Charlotte trying to convey her raw love to her prince and let go of the masquerade of language that she had, Oscar trying to accept his' and her daughter's bitter fate by giving such value to his child's legacy, Leon letting go off his burden of waiting for his lost parents and started to chase his dreams of exploring the world, Ann's and her mother's love of each other written in 50 post mortem letters for Ann to read for years to come, and Aidan's last messages to his beloved parents and the girl of his dream in his dying breath. Again, I've never emotionally attached to character as much as i did with Violet. It's amazing to see her growing from an emotionless child soldier to an empathetic young woman. Every time she feels happy, im happy too. And everytime she cries, i feel like im gonna cry too. A prove of excellent writing and character building. This show reminds me of my love of storytelling and writing, my love of art and craft, and my love of witnessing other people's reaction out of them.... And aside of all of that, this show feels incredibly personal to me. And I dont even know why, maybe it reminds me of something? Maybe it inflict some kind of an emotion? Why does it feels very ethereal and dream like? I don't know... but nonetheless, it's.... i don't know what it is anymore, i am lost at words. This show has been a journey. It was lovely.

Wow, you captured the series perfectly and I couldn't agree more with every single word you wrote! Did you also see both movies? If not, I highly recommend them! They are at least as good as the 13 episodes and expand the world. The second movie completed the series. I can't think of another series which touched me this much. On the one hand I want more of it, but on the other hand I feel it was just enough so we can get what they creators wanted to say. It is the kind of art that can help us be better people and I try to keep that in mind. I wish you well :)

@@_etwas_ Yes, i have seen the movie! And yep, both are excellent. And i think i also feel the same about continuing the series, it would be really cool to have more, but i think the one we have right now is a perfect ending for this series. I wish you well too!

Violet Evergarden is an incredible production top to bottom. The way they manage to completely immerse you and tell a complete, emotional story over the course of a single episode is an astonishing feat and watching Violet grow over the course of the series as this sort of reflection of humanity is uplifting and heart-warming. As far as single episodes go, nothing this year will beat episode 10 where you can literally predict how it will end after the first 5 minutes, yet the execution is so expertly done that you'll find yourself in tears anyway. Also, the soundtrack. My god, the soundtrack. I've been listening to it on the way to and from work almost every day for the past couple of months and it simply doesn't get old. I will say, while it's without a doubt the most important show of the year and one that will remain important for the industry as a whole, it's edged out as my favorite show of the year by "A Place Further Than The Universe." Some of that preference can be attributed to Evergarden's generally depressing setting as well as the main character being harder to relate to. However, "A Place Further Than The Universe" has a ton of outstanding, genuinely hilarious characters, a driving plot and emotional resonance that almost rivals Evergarden at times. Definitely recommend both wholeheartedly (and also Yuru Camp!!!)

I love this anime. The reasons I hear people give about why they don't like it just don't apply to me. They say it's boring and I say character development itself is interesting enough to keep me interested. They say none of the side characters are memorable and I remember loving seeing EVERY characters reactions and emotions, even the maids. They say the story telling is bland, and like others I agree that it's not about the surprise or the turnout but the journey. I hear them say that Violet is unrealistic in her apathy, and while it is exaggerated, at the same time it is understandable. There are cases out in the world where children weren't held, weren't shown compassion, and could barely function as humans. Some of those kids have been put in good families, but even in their adult years they still have struggled. If anything it's a miracle Violet even is as she is now, given she was only with Gilbert for 4 years. And I also know that people who really love action might not enjoy this anime. I however, as much as an anime action addict I am, still love this story. I'm not a huge crier, and I didn't cry. Maybe my eyes teared up and I was yelling at the tv for why things had to turn out as they did in some stories. I didn't cry, but I STILL felt my heart break. I suppose, in the end, your taste and how you view things will decide whether or not you like this anime. Of course, I'm absolutely no where near an expert, so I'd love if you guys could recommend to me what you guys would think are better anime than this.

It’s one of those shows where you can pause it any frame and sell it as in artwork. One thing I really want to see in this show in Season 2 is violet falling in love. She may be confused about how she feels at first is her emotions are still developing, but throughout the show, she comes to understand her feelings. Mabey at the end they could do a shot into the future and we will be able to see Violet with her boyfriend/Husband grown up and with a family (I can’t imagine Violet having a child herself, but I can imagine her adopting some other unfortunate sole.
