@@archivedaccount5990 Yeah fr, I think the Japanese aren't a huge fan of guns, while tradition is a big thing there so katanas and shit are more likely to be used by the MC. I think a lot of Japanese people just tend to view guns as evil for some reason so that's why most animes don't have guns in them, and if they do they are exclusively used by the bad guys.

Watched all 24 episodes over the weekend. I have to say this is the best military action anime since FMP: The Second Raid that I have watched. It is gritty, it is incredibly realistic representation of modern warfare (for anime standard), and it is incredibly "grey"; there is no "good" and "evil" line here. Everything is blurred. Who's the good guys? Who's the villains? The world is crazy and these people are just living on the edge of sanity.
@stevenchoza639110 жыл бұрын

@whartanto210 жыл бұрын
=D Actually I was thinking about the personality of Koko after some unrelated matters (I watched Game of Thrones interview and Ender's Game). The one thing that strike me was how every actor and actress in the GoT always try to see the "good" side of the character they are playing. No matter how evil the character is, the actor and actress always try to "humanize" the person. That is necessary; as Ender said it "It is impossible to truly know someone and not love them the way they love themselves". So what happen when someone hates the very being that they call "self"? They turn a bit wonky like Koko. In a strange way, she's too kind to be a weapon dealer; unlike her brother, who adapt and accept his role, even enjoy it. She hates what she does; at the very end she ranted about she hates seeing the bodies of children strayed on the roadside; and the way people accepted it as the unchangeable way of life. And seen from that light, what she does is actually... kind of Rational / Sane. She's a true utilitarian: if she has to kill 800,000 people to save a few millions, then she'll do it in a heartbeat. That is what I think the "edge of sanity" is in the character. Well, enough squinting for now =)
@stevenchoza639110 жыл бұрын
whartanto2 Maybe... but I still think that Koko's appeal is her insanity! :D That said I'm surprised by her strong anti-drug stance...

I want to say one of the best things about this show is how much research the author put into his subject matter. Just a small sample of the kinds of things that show he knows his shit: In episode 21, the Marines & the Navy SEALs wear different camo, something Hollywood can't get right. The UAVs shown throughout the show are all real (the "Neuron" UAV that was mentioned in episode 8 is actually French). The helicopter Koko leaves the restaurant in episode 7 is a SuperHind Mk. V, which is a South African design and thus appropriately shown in its country of origin. Koko's explanation of how the CIA works to Jonah is practically taken from the Agency's own website. The behavior of Daxinghai in Africa is exactly how real-life Chinese PMCs operate: they take on jobs that advance their nation's national interest in addition to making a profit. And c'mon, when's the last time you've seen a show, any show besides this, have a Finnish Fast Reaction Defense Force commando as a main character?

Glad you finally reviewed this anime. This one definitely cured my itch of gun-pumped action back in 2012 but it turned out to be a bit more than that. I think a lot of people looked it over(I know I almost did) since Fate/Zero was airing at the same time and we all know that was getting the most(very justified) attention. Personally,I liked it more than Black Lagoon. My reasons being that I consider that Jormungand's plot actually went somewhere while Lagoon's kind of didn't(which shouldn't be considered a flaw I think since the show never intended for it to so it's just a matter of taste). Koko Hekmatyar also became one of my favorite anime characters of all time - entertaining throughout the entire series and someone that goes through with her plan to the very end(I would've hated if she chickened). I do think it's better when characters drive the plot instead of the other way around since everything feels more natural that way. Also,let's not forget the mandatory Jormungand jingle: "Her name is Koko,she is loco,I said OH NO!"
@dhsung9110 жыл бұрын
I would say that if Jormungand is like a very gritty sitcom with a serious dilemma, then Black Lagoon is like a B movie that has a rather pessimistic honesty. I do share your preference in this case. Jormungand is pretty good at blending the gritty aspects of its setting with a good dose of adult humor. On the other hand, Black Lagoon is sometimes too saturated with pop cultures and over-the-top philosophical musings. And honestly, I think the ending is a pretty fitting one, considering how Koko is a contradictory and uncompromising character. Although many people complain how the ending doesn't yield any definite answers, the series is not meant to offer any in the first place.

Review FullMetal Alchemist, and FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood
@jacklowry328710 жыл бұрын
Everyone as an Anime fan should have just watched FMA already.
@ultimateamv421610 жыл бұрын
I didn't see the 1st FMA but Brotherhood I did see and it was fucking amazing much better than most other Shounen and only like 50 something episodes. Go watch it Jack you will not regret it. I don't know what the fuck Arkada is waiting for hurry up and review the damn thing.
@PLAYCON97710 жыл бұрын
Guys if he hasn't reviewed it yet he isn't going too. FMA, both Brotherhood and the original are... kinda old now. And would you wanna review an anime that you really loved? Its like going through and picking out all the flaws in something you love because a bunch of rude people shouted it at you over the internet. Plus the way Deletedvirus404 is asking for it to be reviewed makes it sound like he has already seen it anyway? :/
@ultimateamv421610 жыл бұрын
Not true. Arkada revists lots of old Anime and he recommended Fullmetal Alchemist once before. He also said in a podcast that he didn't watch it yet because he is afraid it will be too good Gigguk said the same. Its sitting in his shelf among his vast collection of Anime DVD's. Its a stupid excuse though but whatever let them review what they want its better if they do it when they actually want to. Its just another thing on his long to do list of Anime Reviews. I'm hoping its soon.

Have you heard of Kare Kano? AKA His and Her Circumstances? It's a really enjoyable shojo anime by Bones (has an English dub). Though the manga is even better. P.S. Will you be review Ouran High school Host Club in the future? I'd like to hear your thoughts on both of these series. I understand you likely get plenty of requests but I just wanted to put these on your radar. ^.^

Light is smarter than L.
@kanadetachibana921810 жыл бұрын
gilgamesh310 In what way? While the story plays on the idea that both the anti-hero Light and L are both even in intelligence, Light was never even close. Given so many handicaps, Light shouldn't have even became a suspect. L managed to get extremely close to catching him. In fact I agree with Frikgeek to an extent, but only on Light's side. He got lucky with the rules of the Deathnote, he was lucky he found that investigator's wife with key information, and he was extremely luck with Misa. That's the loophole to DN's perfection, L should not have died like he did. I mean really, after the entire season built up the idea that he only way to win was to be a genius, L dies because Light told his girlfriend to do it. Then he stands over L smugly smirking like he was god for coming up with a mega plot when really it was all anti-climactic bullshit. The second half of the show was so downhill it isn't worth mentioning. Face it, L Lawliet was a genius, everything he did was explained and constructed before execution, without luck. You saw the workings of his character, and he made Deathnote an enjoyable show. Why else would he have so many more fans than Light?
@FafliXx10 жыл бұрын
Kanade Tachibana Yes, L was smart, but nowhere near a genius. All he did was simple logic derivation. Nothing outstanding. Most he did was due to the money he got somehow. Light on the other hand was completely dumb at times. And never really smart. But at least he is not the stereotypical genius who has a great memory, knows everything and is good in science. I hate those. They are completely unrealistic.
@kanadetachibana921810 жыл бұрын
Sabroso258 There is no point in arguing with me, because by saying what happened in the show was simple you imply that you could do it as efficiently. I'm not saying he didn't get help, but I refuse continue on with any conversation with you unless you have proof of your previous statements via credentials. Don't bother replying snidely. You instantly become less than worth my time if you do.
@quantumcaliber275210 жыл бұрын
Kanade Tachibana I hate to interject, but bluntly Kanade, you original statement was even less validated, as it did not even imply the existence of a mode of reasoning. And yet you felt the need to type in a snide response which derided snide responses. No one expects Sabroso to spend 30 minutes making a bibliography to satisfy you for a KZbin comment section on an unrelated video.

Gotta say this was the ONLY show where I was interested in the action scenes for the sake of watching the action itself. Didn't really care about it in black lagoon, darker than black, trigun, ect. Not sure why it just did it in a way that I found actually interesting rather than a means to progress that may contain something I'd be interested in.

Regarding the upbeat feeling of the series: this might sound weird but reality can be stranger than fiction. People join the army for many things, including fun. I'm not saying war is not horrible, it is indeed. But then war can be enjoyable for many, not necessarily psychopaths only. You see, war has been mostly fought throughout history by volunteers. Only a handful of them is ever fought by conscripts. That means for most of history, war is enjoyable. To a certain extent: as long as not too many on your sides are killed. Battles are rare and few inbetween, and 99.9% of the time, soldiers simply don't fight anyone.

Those who have not been on the battlefield are the only ones who really enjoy war. Many join the military but when the bullets start flying, they start regretting it.
@VT-mw2zb9 жыл бұрын
RevanBladeZ This is a politically correct version of this sentiment; any armed service member who display any sign of actually enjoy war, is quickly hushed and corrections quickly issued. For eg, "You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn't wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain't got no manhood left anyway. So it's a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them. Actually it's quite fun to fight them, you know. It's a hell of a hoot. It's fun to shoot some people. I'll be right up there with you. I like brawling." James N. Mattis, USMC Gen. (ret). Then I should point to the fact that mercenaries were and are still lucrative jobs: These are people who trade bullets and blood for money. They are soldiers who participated in wars during their formal military career, upon getting discharged, did not breathe a sight of relief from the "horrors of war", and went right the fuck back in. and as I said, war has always been the domain of volunteers. You don't see that many people volunteer to shovel pig shit for a living. Certainly a helluva lot more for killing. And this is before the rise of nationalism (so don't bring the brainwashed nationalists in here just yet).

As many a current or former soldier of my aquaintance has said; 99% of the time you're bored off your ass, 1% of the time you're scared shitless.

Xuan Vinh To Indeed, if I was born in USA and in poor county and the choice was work in a lumber mill or a coal mine right after high school or go to college and get buried knee deep in student loan that takes a century to pay back I would most definitely volunteer to go shoot guys who slap women around for five years for not wearing a veil...

Another great review! Summed up my own thoughts about the show fairly well. I'd say that while it didn't leave me with quite as strong an impression as Black Lagoon, it still managed to satisfy the "itch" well enough. I felt that the ending was a little abrupt and lacked closure, and it is indeed missing that little something that BL has, however, it's still definitely worth watching. On another note, for some reason I felt the need to suggest an anime for you to review, that being Kokoro Connect. I recently finished watching it and thought it was brilliant, and I recall you mentioning in earlier PodTaku episodes that you were watching it, so I was curious as to what your thoughts were. Just felt like throwing that out there. Keep up the good work!

Jormungand was a FUN anime to watch... It could have been more than that, but I just couldn't 'invest' in ANY of the characters (strange, I know). The dark tones should've been more present in this particular series. Also, that fucking beach scene...What the hell?...And the ending...

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS The ending for this anime was the most disappointing to me. I thought that once Jonah left Koko and joined her brothers squad that Jonah and Koko's brother would work together to stop her but instead we got two years of Jonah dickin around with Koko's brother and then at the end he joins back up with Koko. ,and no I don't remember her brothers name something WASP like I would guess,

For around 90% of the show I loved it. Honestly liked it more then Black lagoon because I found the characters to be more interesting and an overall better team. However I hated the ending. I hate how it kind of went over the top and ridiculous at the end when it was a really fun show about cool characters going on various missions. Wish it stayed like that till the end. Oh well in my book ill just consider the last few episodes non canon lol

Finished Jormungand last week, and would have loved it!.... if I hadn't watched Black Lagoon first. Something was just missing from it, and I think it's just pure dark grittiness. As Arkada pointed out, character development needed some work - I loved Lehm, Valmet and, of course, Koko, but really didn't care for the rest because they were developed on only the most superficial level (minus Jonah, I just didn't care for his character). Otherwise, a decent watch - oh and the music for the opening credits kicked ass.

I think the show's biggest flaw regarding it's payoff is the fact that it felt the need to have one. The fun of I had in watching this show was watching the characters go about their "everyday business", not watching some big overarching plot/payoff. Koko is basically Willy Wonka as a gun runner, undeniably brilliant and completely insane. Jonah meanwhile manages to be believable in he's view point specifically because he is a child and because despite his view on weapons, he values surviving above all else. If they instead went the Black Lagoon route of there being story archs but no larger overarching plot, just Koko and crew working to survive and thrive in such world, I think the series would have been stronger.

@КристиянГарев6 жыл бұрын
MrMakulu, I am sorry but I cannot agree with you at all. You see, from the very first moment you have a glimpse on Koko's character you almost immediately realize that she is a person with larger-than-life long-term goals and she will always be dominating the situation. So, there is no reason to talk about any survival here. While Revvy & Co don't seem to have even the faintest idea about what to do with their lives in the long run, we see Ms Hekmatyar's motivations are the driving force behind her story's plot. Both Black Lagoon and Jormungand are amogst my all-time favourite animes but each of them is great in its own right. Neither of them can be (and should not be) criticized for being different from the other one (after all, Jormungand's plotline seems completed to me, while Black Lagoon's is still drifting in some kind of limbo without a certain path to follow).
@the_weeaboot80425 жыл бұрын
Jormungand pissed me off. The good guys killed over 600k people, when yeah war sucks but for shit's sakes America has the ability to help people and end wars, through violence and money, people just choose not to. And war will always continue, peace cannot be forced. That and I had to watch the sub. Too much reading and it pissed me off
