#Glastonbury

The site of Glastonbury Abbey is one of the important ancient #heritage sites in the UK.
A focus for many people who value the spiritual and historical resonances of the place, it is best known for its legendary reputation as the burial place of King Arthur and as the earliest Christian foundation in Britain, allegedly founded by Joseph of Arimathea, the great-uncle of Christ, in AD 63.
A team of AHRC-funded researchers, led by Professor Roberta Gilchrist of Reading University, has re-evaluated the history of #GlastonburyAbbey and its environs and disentangled the rich but not always accurate myth from historical reality.
Among the findings are: fresh evidence to confirm that the abbey site was indeed occupied in the 5th or 6th century, before the foundation of the Saxon monastery; identification of an early timber building with large post pits associated with fragments of imported Roman amphorae, dated c AD 450-550 and often associated with very high status secular (ie royal) settlement; analysis of glass and metal fragments suggesting that the glass-working furnaces at #Glastonbury represent the earliest evidence for significant glass production in Saxon England; and a great deal more.
The project has worked closely with local groups and the general public and outreach activities have been crucial to its work and its findings.
This film examines the new evidence unearthed by the project and how researchers have worked with the Abbey Museum, conservators and the public to explore the history of this rich and extraordinary site.

a great place to wander around and discover so many places, the Tor, the abbey, the ancient high street etc but the white spring well and temple are my favourite place to just sit and absorb the atmosphere, Glastonbury sits on the biggest intersection of leylines in the UK and it this I think that has attracted so many people over the years, they are drawn to the area without realising why, when I first visited the area it wasn't as commercialised as it is now, I suppose the hippy's of yesteryear turned into today's yuppies.

While the idea that King Arthur was nine feet tall appears to be pure hokum, there is a great deal of circumstantial evidence of what some historians like to call the Glastonbury myths. The one piece of evidence of the seemingly miraculous is the Holy Thorn itself. So, no offense to my Catholic friends but I believe the first Christian denomination was not the Roman Catholic Church. While the Coptic Church claims that it was the first, in fact the Catholic Church itself admitted that the Grail Church, also known as the Celtic Church, the British Church, the Old Catholic Church and others is very likely the first denomination. The Grail Church was the Church of St. Patrick, St. Columba, St. Gildas, St. Brendan and others. This is from “On Grail Christianity” “Perhaps the greatest mystery involved in an examination of the life of Christ is what to make of the so-called “missing years.” Some of those, who have been willing to publish their speculations, suggest that during those missing years Jesus traveled to far reaches of the ancient world, including Roman-era England, India and perhaps other locales. For those that argue that there is no Biblical proof that other than the early exile of the Holy Family in Egypt, Christ was not always present in the Holy Land. It does seem likely, however, that the totality of the life of Christ could not be fully contained within the Gospels. Indeed in John 21:25, John clearly admits he has just scratched the surface of what Christ accomplished on earth: “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that could be written.” There is less than complete agreement on all tenets of Grail Christianity among Grail Christians. Still, just about all agree, that Jesus Christ visited the British Isles at least once and possibly twice with his great uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, settling for a time at Glastonbury in the west of England. According to the early legends and traditions of Britain, the oldest of Christian denominations, Grail Christianity, also associated with Celtic, Druidic, Old Catholic, Welsh and other early Christian denominations, was first started by Christ himself during a visit to Glastonbury in the west of England with his great uncle Joseph of Arimathea. Joseph of Arimathea, who was also known as the "tin man" in Britiain, became the guardian of the Christ child during the missing years between his 13th birthday and his ministry in the Holy Land. As Joseph of Arimathea was a rich trader who sailed much of the known world in Phoenician ships, he was accompanied by Jesus when he traveled to Glastonbury near the Mendip Hills, whose mines produced much, if not most, of the world's then supply of lead and tin. Over one winter fierce storms forced the two to stay at Glastonbury for an extended period and they established what became known as the Wattle Church converting many of the area Druids to the very first Christianity. After the passion Joseph of Arimathea returned to Glastonbury with the Holy Grail, planted the Holy Thorn and reestablished the Wattle Church on the 12 hides of Glastonbury, a royal land grant. Upon Joseph of Arimathea's death and subsequent burial at Glastonbury, the Holy Grail was lost and it became the quest of the knights of a later king, King Arthur, to relocate it and solve its mysteries. The true identity and nature of Arthur, his knights and the quest are discussed in detail. The Grail Church was eventually consumed by the much more aggressive Roman Catholic church although small and often competing revivals of the denomination are still underway. Check out censored historians, Alan Wilson and Baram Blacketts many decades of deep and authentic research into original documents and inscriptions, mostly (only mostly) revealed in their numerous books. A very different story of Christ, J of A, Glastonbury, King Arthur and much more. Also, take a gander at Britain's Hidden History on this platform and their website. The Glastonbury tales , if W&B are correct, were a very successful shell game, a money-making and land-grab weez.

The issue is modern Druidry has arrived out of 'Pop culture.' Where are the first records of actual 'Druidry ' religious uses of Stonehendge? "Neolithic" and so on are just periods of how we understand time. Is it not more likely that Stonehendge was built by Brythonic tribes? ..Many of the festivals celebrated there are not English in origin. Anglo-rename and modernist in approach. Modern Drudiry is a melting pot of many ancient Celt and modern cultures taken out of context as I believe . Misinterpreted ideas have caused issues with authenticity. A much more authentic experience could be had in Wales or Ireland... It is my idea that Glastonbury and Stonehendge have been reinvented for modern Druid weekend tourists.

an arrogant archaeologist who cannot think outside of her scientific training. need to get men back in charge of archaeology and excavations, they would dispense of all the fluff. this skepticism is non-scientific but belief-orientated. She wouldn't know the actual history because that information has been lost. all they are providing is their own personal subjective ideas and they have not really done anything
