Welcome to my Home Pottery Studio and Vlog Series Episode #·6 · Studio Life: where creativity knows no bounds! In today’s video, I’m thrilled to share the moment of truth as I unveil the results of my latest Glaze Kiln Firing. Get ready to witness some stunning new glaze combinations that have turned my clay creations into true works of art!! I’m almost speechless!! Almost…
In my opinion, Glaze Kiln Openings are THE most exciting part of the ceramic process as soooo much anticipation after weeks of work boil down to this, exact, moment…and I share it with you… from the moment I crack open the kiln you will observe close ups of each piece and hear my thoughts about the different glazes combinations and glaze layering that I use.
If you are a Beginner Potter, Hobby Potter or full blown Production Potter you'll find invaluable insights to inspire your own projects. I list all the glazes and number of coats so you too can re-create these stunning ceramic glaze combinations. I have also taken “before and after" photo’s which I share in the Photo Recap section, that in my opinion, provides a visual feast, and showcase’s the magic that pottery glaze can work on the different clay bodies.
I use only commercial glazes made in North America. In this video I use both brush on a dip/pour methods using Amaco Potter’s Choice, Mayco and Coyote glazes.
I’ve carefully added timestamps, ensuring you can effortlessly navigate through the video to find the information that interests you the most. I respect your time and want you to get maximum value from this experience.

Oh how exotic!! Never been to Fiji and would love to venture to that part of the world, you're a lucky lady!! I did grow up sailing tho! my Dad was an avid sailor and i spent the better part of my childhood on a sailboat travelling throughout the Caribbean! I'm with you, I think i prefer the Sunset Pink, but I'm going to play with the Fairy Rose a bit and see what other effects I can get! 💕 💕💕

Oh, my goodness, you are a blast to watch! I purchased a kiln sitter kiln about 16 years ago for $450 from a friend who had just bought it brand new a year earlier and never used it. Since I was teaching full-time and selling my paintings as well, the kiln sat unused until 2 years ago when I returned to pottery and that kiln sitter has been a pain in the neck!! Still, I've been able to get work out of it and sell it along with my paintings. This weekend we are changing the elements, and I am hoping to use it until I have made enough from sales to purchase a new kiln. I will want to continue to use this one for bisque firings and the new one for glazes. Cross your fingers for me. Thank you for inspiring me. I'll keep wishing and hoping we each get new kilns soon!
@SarahWaltonPottery

I know, I can't wait until I get a digital kiln! 🤪 The sitter is definitely a challenge and can be soo dang frustrating, 😵‍💫🤬 however, I think that we have an advantage because we are learning so much more about the entire firing process..at least that's what I tell myself! Thanks for watching my shenanigans and I'm so glad that you enjoy my, how shall I say.."extra" personality! 🤭 🥰

that pitcher is absolutely gorgeous! and so what if it is pitted, that’s ok. its charactor. love it!
@SarahWaltonPottery
@SarahWaltonPottery 10 ай бұрын
Hi Elizabeth! Thank you so much! The pitting is a huge flaw, especially if on the inside and on this pot it is! When there is pinholes or blisters appear on the inside it renders it 'not food safe' so this pitcher would be only useful as a vase. In this video it was it's second glaze fire as I was trying to even out an even more sever 'frothing' pinhole issue so, after this firing it was a giagantic improvement! With that said, I did decide to fire it 3rd time, and well, I've just sat down to begin editing the glaze kiln opening...coming soon!! xo

Girrrllllll!!! Omg these are INCREDIBLE!!!! I absolutely adore seeing your excitement! You were actually jumping in the air. Hahaha!!! That poor pitcher! Hahaha. I love it! If you fire it again do NOT ADD MORE GLAZE. JUST FIRE IT ON a few short kiln posts to raise it up enough for the drips to not stick! Hahaha. I Love the two sided mugs/cups!!!!! I love the fairy rose because it’s more pink and I AM A PINK loving girl!! Just a suggestion for removing the cookies, instead of knocking it off use a dremel tool with a Diamond core Diamond disc!! Or any kind of Diamond grinding disc to get them off. More work but I’ve saved All of my pots recently doing it this way. Hope that helps. I love that you staggered the shelves and it seemed to have helped!!

Thanks for this advise!! I have tried to use my Dremel with a diamond bit but as you said, it takes time, and I'm very, impatient! I just purchased a glass cutter and torch and i tried it, mind you, only once, but it worked. I need to practice and see if it's a viable method, (stay tuned) but I will purchase a diamond disc for my Dremel as a back up! I really appreciate all of your support and incredible suggestions!! Thank you for watching!! xo

Thanks for sharing! I am new to pottery having started in classes last January. I am now at the point where I want to up my glaze game. So far I have been using the studio’s glazes. I admit glazing is the hardest part of this craft for me. I still don’t really LOVE anything I have done. Your kiln opening was so informative and gave me lots of ideas to think about before I order some glazes for my self. I plan to check out all of your videos. You really have some beautiful results. I also like the shape of your large mugs. Very pretty and look like they’d be cozy to hold.

Hi Ellen! Thank you!! I so appreciate your kind comments! I too struggled with the glaze part of the process as I felt, and still do, that its the one part of the process that I don't have complete control over, if that makes sense.. It takes time to develop a style and some combos that work for you. if I may offer a tidbit of unsolicited advice...don't hold too strong of an opinion of how a piece will turn out, lots of times I can expect one result and get something completely different and feel disappointed...only to walk away from it for a day or two and it grows on me. Thanks for watching...I've got some more goodies coming soon! 🥰

Thanks for sharing what you're doing, Sarah. I really appreciate the photo recaps. I just got Winter Wood so I don't know how it behaves. Your video helps me see that. Also, in answer to your questions, first, I prefer the Fairy Pink, as it contrasts with the subtle pink marbled clay nicely. Second, I prefer the Archie's Base over the Mayco Light Flux. I think it creates more interesting contrast. Just an idea for the flower mugs. Have you considered waxing the flowers so that you see the dark, unglazed flowers surrounded by your favourite pink combo? Love pink and brown BTW. 😁👍👍

Heeeyyyy!! No, I didn't think of waxing the flower, sheesh what a FANTASTIC idea!! OMG duh! Why didn't i think of that!!! 🤪 This is one of the many reasons why I love this community that is growing, you guys offer sooooo much valuable insight and sometimes I'm just so dang close to the work that I don't think outside the box!! I appreciate this!! You will love winterwood. I typically use it as a base glaze, and always keep in mind that it will make the top glaze move! I too prefer the Archies Base but I hate how it 'gum's up' but I just love the colour and like you said the interesting contrast! Thank you sooo much for your support of my small channel! xo

Sorry that was on the rose w/Archie’s base. The pink was more intense using Archie’s Base but the texture popped out more using the flux. So just preference. A thought about your pin holes. Which was a problem I had as well with some clays. Needed slower bisque plus a hotter bisque. The impurities are still off gassing and if it doesn’t finish in the bisque they continue in the glaze fire but I think the hold time in the glaze fire can help them come on up and the glaze seal over. Enjoy your channel 😊

Hi Sharon, thank you and I so pleased to hear you enjoy my channel. I’ve since upgraded my kiln to a brand new one with a digital controller which has mad a huge difference in my kiln firings, both bisque and glaze which has drastically decreased the pinhole problems I experienced with my manual kiln. I appreciate you feedback with your preference between light flux and Archie’s Base! I totally agree with you too! 🤭😉🥰

Oh, my, gosh Sarah...The Fairy Rose is stunning but I do love the Sunset Pink too, so hard to decide! You are the Queen of Pink💗 The satin Rose Quartz is such a lovely shade of pink, dang pin holes! Sometimes that happens to me if I put a satin over a glossy glaze, but under like you said should work nicely. You could also try Alabaster under the Rose Quartz to keep that satin feel/look? I love Alabaster for that. And I love, love, love the Lustrous Jade/Cenote tumblers on that marble clay!! Hi Vicki! sadly, the pitcher found its way into my 'box of doom' awhile back. It got worse, and there are only so many times you can fire a piece...so it got smashed! 🥹 When I did this firing, back in the summer, I had a manual kiln so it was a lot of turning the kiln on/off and nothing that can easily be duplicated. Fairy Rose is a staple in my studio! get your hands on some if you can!! 🥰

Hi and I'm so excited that you are beginning your pottery journey!! I'm using glaze here. Ceramics primarily go thru 2 firings; a bisque and glaze fire. The first fire is at a lower temp (bisque) and begins the vitrification of the piece but still allows glaze to adhere. Underglaze can be applied to leather hard clay (before any firing but before the piece is completely dry) it can also be applied on bisqueware but not left on the food surface bare, but okay if left on the body of the piece without any additional treatment...I hope this makes sense! In this video, I'm applying Mid-Hi Fire Glazes and they are the finished surface and deemed food safe. Glaze manufactures will list if the glaze is a food safe or not...hope this helps!! 🥰

Yes, sometimes I will add more glaze and refire but in the case of the flowery cups in this vid that I put too much glaze on I’ll probably gust pop them back in and cross my fingers…

I’m trying to find the glazes you used and can’t. Please help me find them. Thanks 🙏

Hi Eileen, I would start by doing a google search for pottery supply near you. This will bring up pottery stores and and you can search their inventory and order from them direct. Typically the manufacturers of the glazes themselves don't sell direct to consumer. You can check their distributer list on there websites for help too. Depending on your geographic area some may not be available, like I hear that the UK doesn't have Coyote glazes. I hope this helps! xo
