Naya said in some interview that she always was in character when in the background so the camera would be on her as much as possible and she would get a better role in the show. She did whatever she could to get recognized and that’s the reason for so many facial expressions of hers

I had a small occuring figurating role in a teaser production myself, and did the exact same thing so once the movie was greenlit, I might actually become a minor character that gets a name and a few lines (unfortunately, the movie was rejected by various producers).

It was going to be about how some victims during the plague had been locked up to die, only to become a mutated race of cannibals that had still been living in a sealed up tomb for centuries until a bunch of students accidentally would discover that tomb. I know one of the producers who didn't pick up the movie was Jason Blum.

Naya's background facial expressions are what make half the show for me. How she can storytell and add flavor to a scene she's not even actively involved in with a single expression always leaves me in awe or in stitches or both. Her expression when the rosedale mennonites sang "Over the River" singlehandedly expressed what the whole world was thinking in the moment, which was, "What the damn hell is going on?"
