Notice at the 2min mark it appears Merle thinks John is going take another run then pauses then continues the lyrics then John plays a few off chord notes for the comeback. Merle acknowledges with a smirk/smile. Awesome stuff!

John Hartford sure plays a more interesting banjo part than Glen did on the record. Hartford looks like he's balancing his checkbook in his head while he's ripping off those licks and chromatic runs. So effortless, yet so tasteful.
