I imagine if Van ever asked me point blank what song I wanted to hear, I'd go completely blank at the sheer improbability of it all. Well played, Glen, for keeping your wits about you!

It's so amazing and so funny to me to hear Glen talk about his experience with his idol in this way because Glen is basically my musical hero and I had a somewhat similar experience with him at one of his shows last month when he pulled me up onstage to sing Falling Slowly with him. And like he said after experiencing something like that it's more than just meeting someone you admire, it's walking away a changed musician.

(8 years later...) And actually since all musicians are basically conduits for passing on their own musical influences and encounters to those like yourself, who model themselves after them...you've been getting bits of Van, Dylan, and Leonard Cohen when you listen to Glen.

as someone who holds Van Morrison in the highest regard, I can fully imagine this experience and what it would feel like as a musician. Absolutely magical! Well told sir! A fortunate man indeed!

At 2:45, had Hansard been thinking at the time Van chided him, he could have said OK, and started singing, "You put your hand in mine, and then you say hello, and I can hardly speak, my heart is beating so, and any one can tell, you think you know my well, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW ME". Van would have either loved him or killed him. Anyway a great and enviable story. Thanks for posting it.

I could listen to Glen tell these anecdotes all day long at any time. Like his first meeting with Dylan, and the guitar he gave him. Life moments that anyone would have wanted to live. Truly a beautiful story with Van Morrison and an experience of a lifetime as Glen described it. Thanks for sharing this clip!

Fascinating. From this story Glen seems a charming, decent warm "human" bloke and Van seems more than a bit "techy" and playing the distant artiste. Both are great artists, but I'd rather have a conversation or a pint with Glen.

Van's attitude and actions towards Glen was an example of how the Music Industry treated Van (and probably everyone else) in the beginning of his/their career(s). A good lesson for Glen to not expect "special star treatment" if ever he would become a recording artist. "Good voice, good songs, blah, blah, blah!" Another way to say, "You're not special. Play your songs.Publish your own songs. Don't look for special treatment".

What a GREAT story! Beautifully told. To some level in my opinion Glen has more depth to his music and personality than Van. Don't take me wrong, Van is awesome. Just saying Glen's music is amazing and full of energy. Every performance I see, he's so genuinely in the moment and everyone listening can feel it. And off course Marketa is always there, focused, very supportive - every moment their eyes meet. It's a joy to watch these guys play.

He told us bono had advised him not to be so accessible to the public and there we were drinking pints of stout .glen was slow enough to buy a round
