I was born and raised in Southland. The Catlins can be windier than Wellington but the sea can also be wild and that's when I like the place! It's remote and wild but awesome at the same time.

I am so glad you are going to Invercargill. I left there in 1966 when it was a town but it has grown much bigger. I hope they still have that southern hospitality we used to show to tourists!

You should be able to get drinking water from the small volunteer fire stations in most small towns, they normally have an outside tap to use

So. I've watched your journey since you have arrived and you both are amazing people. And I know Te Reo can trip you up but as someone that gets corrected all the time with my teachings of German (Ja, ich lerne Deutsch)... the Te Reo vowels are similar to both Deutsch and Irish (ah, eh, ee, oar, ew) so it's pronounced phonetically Poo-rah-co-newee

This was my place as a child, no one else camped there except for us, and 2 other families for years, that was in 1972 ❤ then the surfers found it, the last time i was there it was packed, i felt sad, we caught and cooked our own kai, i know every inch of purakanui bay. Also PURAKANUI means "pile of bones", many maori settlements through the catlins. I love your vid but im the OG of the sacred place 😊

Great video. But please make sure you check if fires are allowed. As things are starting to get very dry with high winds wild fires are a major risk. Most places now have a total fire ban in place unless you have a special permit.

I notice that even on the Catlin's Coast people are telling you to remember your sun cream. It's important to note that no part of the UK is nearer to the equator than ANY part of NZ, including the Catlins. There are no land masses to hinder the "roaring forties" that sends storms racing to the south of NZ, meaning the there is almost always a tempering breeze, but that the atmosphere is swept clean of any pollution, so that the UV factor in NZ is extremely high. The Catlins are about the same latitude south as Nantes in France is in the north, and Auckland and Tunis share almost identical latitudes too. It is just too easy for Brits to think it's pleasantly warm there, when, in fact the suns rays can be quite ferocious. One of the easiest places in the world to get badly burned.

That $10 chips would though feed a family as a snack. The guy at the 4 square probably has reason to be grumpy, at this time of the yr with freedom campers, but needs to treat every customer as an individual and not blame us all. A few bad apples ruin it for the rest of us if they don't play to the rules.

I'm not sure if they still do but the U.S Air Force flies out of Christchurch to resupply Antarctica.
@lindascott690211 ай бұрын
Yes, they still fly out of Christchurch, which is one of the 5 global gateways to Antarctica, and one of only 2 gateways to the Ross Ice Shelf (an important area for scientific research). The US National Science Foundation’s Antarctic Program also uses Christchurch to fly to McMurdo Station, the Americans largest station on the continent.

$10 for fries. That’s disgraceful. There’s no reason a caravan should charge that much, pure greed.
@tonybennett415911 ай бұрын
I guess it's a question of footfall. Corner shops in the UK charge more than supermarkets for that very reason.
