After watching the entire test. I'd say I like the 500 out of the two. The 600 is too pink for my tastes. (The 400 & 500 would give red lights at night a pink-ish cast. And some things leaned towards yellow). The 500 more neutral and brighter on the verge of being a tad too bright. Canon lenses still exhibit chromatic aberration purple fringing around tree branches against a white sky and specular highlights. The SONY lenses don't exhibit any. I like your tripod rig a lot. Very simple. I'll have to get a SONY 4K and compare it to the G20. Then return it lol Probably lose my Best Buy Elite Rewards status in the process 'um were you just playin'?' No I expected 5K. This is only 4 ; But seriously Canon loads the 400-600's with the kitchen sink in features, build quality, and the battery out of the box last a long time. I used the 400 & 500 plugged in a lot for collectibles subject matter. That was a nice convenience.

Thank you very much for your response and doing the comp with 500 too. I got the 600 but returned it yesterday. Am sure its great for many but my issues were: Stills quality was disappointing, for my Mac 10.6 there was no video software downloadable from Canon's site. I was able to transfer video taken at the highest res to my Mac in the Iphoto but playing it i was not impressed by the vid quality. However, some of the 600 videos in 1080p on youtube are very good. perhaps i did something wrong in vid.anyway, thanks a lot again for your help. i am researching and most likely go with dslr Nikon 5500.

FAautobahn A I hate proprietory software. Both camera clip management software and scanner software drive me nuts. I always just remove the SD card from the camera, put it in the drive and copy the files over in the OS. That's my workflow, but i understand if others want some software to deal with that. Stills are disappointing with this camera, for some reason the camera shoots stills equivalent to 2.2 megapixels camera. Any camera over 50x zoom will require a tripod. Your heartbeat alone will be picked up by the camera when zoomed fully in.

Back in March of '15 when I picked up my R500 they were asking $250 for the white and $200 for the black, but I found the white at B&H for $200. Now, I see the 500 and 600 both going for $200 everywhere. At least I didn't pay too much. Great job with the video, I agree with those that say the 500 looked better. It reminded me of last year when I had cataract surgery. You get each eye done at separate times two weeks apart. When the first eye was done, everything through the old eye looked like it had an amber tinge, the 600 reminded me of that, a sort of amber or pinkish tint to the backgrounds and even your dog since it's white. I was able to get around the lack of lens thread, I bought a 37mm lens spacer and supergluded it it works great. I've got one of those wide angle lens hoods on mine, it looks neat. Here's a link to a video I shot last March at spring training in Clearwater, it was a real cloudy day, even rained a little later. Thanks for sharing your video, I think I'll hang onto my R500 for now.

Great comment. Thanks for watching. I do want to point out that both cameras were set to automatic white balance. Had white balance settings been deployed, any change in hue could have been changed. both cameras were put side by side and put in auto, and turned on at the same time. It is entirely possible that the 500 has slightly better auto white balance, or if I were to do the same thing 10 times, the difference would be slightly different each time. that's the part that stinks about automatic.

Thanks. Tough slow-mo would be nice, I find that time-lapse works best for me shooting at 24p or 25p and then accelerating in post. I don't do much time lapse, though, but that's an option. Since I'm doing post-processing on about 90% of my stuff, I don't see the advantage... though if there were just a choice between the two, I'd be fine.

Thanks for letting me know about this. It's going to be a little harder for me to carry my friend's G20 I mentioned round an amusement park compared to the R400 and 500 : The 400-600 are fairly big compared to the competition. But the 500 fit well in an old NHL Starter Jacket I used last Fall that had zippered pocket in the front. Kind of like a fanny pack. Only a little sportier ; If you look at the 2014 Halloween shows I shot at 'redgartershows' channel the 500 had trouble with the stage fogger. The audio wasn't as good because I was off to the side. So it wasn't as good of test material as it could've been. I didn't get to shoot that type of material with the 400. My 'Collection THX1138' channel shows what the 400 and 500 did manually white balanced. I used clamp lights with T-shirt diffusers. They white balanced really well. But like I mentioned. The LCD clutter made it very difficult to compose shots in a small studio setting for that purpose. When I watched it in iMovie it was like I was looking at the footage for the first time. I had to reshoot some stuff. They both took really nice still photos. Someone on youtube shot a lot of black & white outdoor video with the 400 that looked great. On a side note, my friend's Canon Rebel she got last year black & white looks flat and gray. Color is overly saturated IMHO. It does take nice video fwiw. I wouldn't replace a good camcorder with it though.

@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
David Williams unfortunately, I don't think anybody makes a great "all purpose" night vision camera. Bell - Howell makes a very interesting infrared night vision camera, at this price point, called DNV16HDZ. Retails around $200. I think you would be woefully disappointed with remaining camera functionality, but pleased with the fact that you just bought a Night Vision camcorder for under $200.00, the fact it can almost shoot during the day is value added. With this formfactor you can get some really interesting equipment, but it can't do everything. There is always a short coming somewhere.

Thanks for the comparison. I am in the market for a new camera as been using a JVC GZ-HM450 for a few years now. Once thing I wasn't sure about is the 'fast motion' option. It almost gives you the appearance of time-lapse, but I don't see that anywhere in the specs. If not, seems like the camera matches the effects of time-lapse with the fast motion. I do lots of time-lapse with my JVC and it does not seem like it's a feature easily found in this type of camcorders. How equivalent is this feature to time lapse in your opinion? Thanks.
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
cubfan65 "fastmotion" recording is the same as Time Lapse. The camcorder is taking a frame of video at an interval you select in the "fast motion" settings menu. No audio is captured during the process, which can be a bummer sometimes.

@glencouls8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Strack the 700 will be better. It depends by how much, for how much. Let me explain. There are two big differences between the hfr500 and the hfr600. Threaded lens for the new body, and time lapse both fast and slow mo. Two features that many people can't do without, but that many people can. I'm hoping with the 700 you will see better zoom stability, new features, shooting in mp4 at 60fps. I will look at the 700 specs tonight and report back here what I learn. How much are you willing to pay for 2 or 3 more features?
@MrBluesluver8 жыл бұрын
+glencouls Thanks for the reply. I looked up the specs on both & it looks like the main difference between the 600 & 700 is the 700 had a baby monitor mode. I may be missing something though. Also, the 600 is discontinued, but Cannon has a refurbished for $155.95. the 700 is $260 on Amazon. I'm wondering if the 700 is worth the extra $100. let me know what you think.
@glencouls8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Strack it's not a baby monitor but babymode. it automatically saves things shot into folders dedicated to that baby. I'll be honest I've never used that feature, it does come with the hfr600 too. it's in the mode selection menu. I just looked over the published specs for the 700 and I'll be dammed if I can find anything new. I really need the pdf of the Manual, at first look I can't find it.

Good review! The problem I have with camcorders in general are; how much are you going to use these cameras after buying them? If you have kids (I do not), they I can see their value. Otherwise, how much are you going to view the videos in the future after you take them. But as I initially said though, good review.
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
that's actually a very well thought out statement. it focuses on what you use the camera for, which is exactly what you should be thinking about. I use camcorders for shooting live sports, for the frontier league I get paid a little bit of money to produce the games. These cameras are decent to create a small market production of the games, this is something my Galaxy S5 phone cannot do. However, my phone shoots great video when connected to a tripod. it's not as good as the 500 or 600, but it's pretty damn good in comparison. My suggestion to people is think about what it is you do with your videos, do you need a camcorder? what features do you need? what capacity do you need? if you are shooting 30 minute plus long events you will likely want a camcorder.

AMAZING that you took such care in preparing the comparison. You're so incredibly brilliant sir. I accidentally deleted a bevy of files and wish to get them back. Any suggestions on recovery?
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
+We Savannah First step is getting the SD card out of the camera. Do not save another clip to that SD card over the remnants of the files left over. If you do, you will just swisscheese the files and make them unrecoverable. If you have a 60 model and deleted from internal memory (not the SD card) you are kind of screwed (sorry). But let's say you have the SD card out of the Camera, the files you deleted are still kind of like a ghost on that SD card. Really! You need to use an undelete application on your operating system, so you will need a card reader for your system. I have found that modern Laptops have card readers built in, and lots of desktops coming equipped since 2008. The undelete application will save the segments of files it recovers into a directory of your choosing. Most people get his far, but they forget that media files have a special section called a header, it contains all the metadata of the file, stuff like screen dimensions, frame rate, audio compression, bit rate, etc. If the header is damaged pretty much all software will just puke on the file and not know how to handle it. But, say you recover most of the video file but not the header, and Final Cut, Premiere, Avid, and Vegas are all throwing rocks at it, go buy this weird obscure German antidote called Grau GmbH. You can 4 encodes for $25.00 and unlimited for $99.00, expensive I know but this application has saved my neck a few times. This is the one application that I have on all of my production computers. Works on windows. Good Luck with your recovery project.

+glencouls whoops. It's the HF R600. Aughhh I Charlie Browned it man. I shot another clip on top of it . I just knew that was a mistake.
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
Still try it. If you had a 32 gig card only recorded a few hundred megs you may be able to recover it. Just pull the SD card out of the camera body, the 600 has no internal storage so those videos are likely on the SD card in some form, it will be some work to make them usable again. The stuff that is recorded over is gone forever.

Canon claims more efficient battery life with the R600, though they may have just been referring to the R62 having the extended battery as a standard option. Could you run a battery life test to see if this holds true?
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
***** Sorry friend any test for the battery at this point would be unfair for the R600 as I have already charged and depleted probably 40 times or more and the battery is no longer in "new" or "like new" condition. Any results I post would be with a battery not at true 100% presenting too many variables. I can tell you the battery life is very good. I get plenty of life to record Softball and Hockey games, or shooting church services. Some of the Softball games over 2 hours.

Jay Ryan both cameras used the same brand and compatible fast SD cards, and were set up, and started the same way at the same time. What you are seeing are results that you can get with the cameras. I would bet that the R500 is potentially not as good as the 600 in low light (but only by a hair), but i was pleased at the way both cameras shot, and only noticed limited hesitation or dropped frames from the R500. It really comes down to budget constraints with which Camera to go with in my opinion. Both are good entry level camcorders, having an external mic input at this price point is value added.

@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
Mohammed Hussin these camcorders would do a fine job recording a football game for personal use at that budget. I would very seriously consider getting a wideangle lens to shoot the event, make sure you shoot in sport mode, and make sure you select outdoor white balance, or adjust white balance for indoor use. The quality for indoor football may vary, as these small CMOS chips crave a well lit area, which a dome or arena might not be able to provide. Your proximity to the event (camera placement), and height off the field is paramount for the quality of the recording. If you are in the "cheapseats" don't expect to be getting footage equivalent to ESPN or Foxsports. Remember, the very best you could come to expect is a single camera shoot, with a camera that has about 1/8th of the quality that they use for shooting television. I would very seriously consider getting a second camera (and shooter) of the same make and model as your "game camera" if you are looking for a more professional looking product. Good luck, have fun, and keep your gear safe at all sporting events.

Thanks for the awesome review! The R600 seems to be suitable for my needs. I am planning to use it for powerpoint presentations, lectures and screen-captures. I have a few questions for you as you seem to know a lot about this camcorder. Q1. My videos are about 1 1/2 hr long and I was wondering if the R600 has the tendency to overheat, as some camcorders do and will shut off before the end of the recording (shooting at 1080p MP4 30 fps)? Q2. Does the R600 require a 64GB SD card or a 32GB SD card in order to record at 1080p MP4 30 fps? Q3. I read somewhere that the R600 does not support drag and drop when extracting files once plugged into a computer, but it would need a software in order to do so. I am running on iMac and I was wondering if this is true and what kind of software I would need. Thanks a lot for your reviews and test videos! They have been very helpful in determining my decision! Keep up the great work!

I have recorded events more than 2.5 hours long in 80 degree heat. My camcorders are white, so a little different there. Sorry, I'm not even familiar if the R600 can take a 64GB card. I use 32GB class 10, fast cards they record mp4 30fps fine. Just take the card out of the camcorder and put it in a reader. I can't stand that cheesy proprietary media management software that ships with any camera. If it comes free it's usually garbage in my opinion (except for some very useful free linux applications, not pertaining to this topic). So get a reader, remove the SD card from the camera, plug it into the reader, your mac will read it fine. I have a Hackintosh and I get my media this way all the time.

X-TremePyro144 I can't endorse the r600 or r500 for fireworks. Not because they aren't good cameras, but because I have never shot with them at a fireworks show before. I suspect that the low light or even sunset setting might enhance the experience of the recorded content, but without testing it myself, I just don't know for sure. Best of luck with your shoot. With which ever camera you buy, I would suggest a camera that accepts threaded lenses, so can install a wideangle lens so you can get close, but still capture the show in its entirety. Do not use a fisheye lens, as it will distort too much of the shape of the round fall area. A star filter might enhance each little explosion, but it might also be too much and look really fake. Have a great shoot!

3:19 wtf happened to the shutter speed

To maintain an image, the camera slowed the rate down to 1/30th or 1/15th automatically. Otherwise there probably wouldn't be anything there to see.

I wish I can make videos longer with the camera
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
yeah, 20 min clips can be kind of short. You can record 3 hrs long or more by recording with wirecast. All you need is a high end laptop with wirecast installed, an HDMI cable or a sabrent video capture card, and an event long enough to keep people interested. Have fun.

Tamiko Hershey Don't mention it. I have the two cameras, It seemed like a no-brainer to show footage from both. Happy shooting, shopping, or editing.

glencouls I am graphic designer, but new to video. Your review was thorough and to the point. Showing the different lighting conditions, amazing zoom and "action" shots were a great help.

I hate video intros or what we call "opens" on youtube, long explanations (I save that for text), and face shots. Credit rolls are the worst. I figure nobody wants to see me and are here for the cameras, so that's what I try to deliver. Getting to the point is what I try to do, but being thorough enough that everybody can take something away from my videos is a goal as well. Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comment, it means a lot to me when somebody hits on the 3 or 4 items I was trying achieve throughout the production.

Hi, do these camcorders record in 20 minute intervals or if I press record it will continue recording until I stop it or the memory card is full. I'm looking for a camcorder to record an hour lecture non stop without it breaking into three 20 minute clips.
@EA409 жыл бұрын
+HealingPowerHour Good luck. I've used $800 camcorders that do that. haha
@AnubisAkaLee9 жыл бұрын
+HealingPowerHour I know this is a terribly late response, but I wanted to let you know, and hopefully anyone else with the same question know, that the Sony line of both still cameras with full motion shooting as a bonus feature as well as the Handy cam line of camcorders will shoot continuously beyond that odd 20 minute barrier. I know why they (Canon, Samsung and a few others) do it, it's because they are too damn lazy to add NTFS support to the firmware they all keep copying over and over. The only 1 up this Canon would have over a Sony of the same price point is that this is rated at a lower lux for indoor shooting.
@xcpenguin99549 жыл бұрын
+HealingPowerHour It seems they record up to 12 hours (or until the memory card fills up). canoncanada.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/49558/~/movie-recording-times-for-memory-cards-(vixia-hf-r62%2Fr60%2Fr600)

+Dan Heinz No, the link you refer to states the following: The following types of MP4 scenes will be recognized as multiple files on other devices. - Scenes exceeding 4 GB. - Scenes recorded at 35 Mbps exceeding 30 minutes. - Scenes recorded at a video quality other than 35 Mbps exceeding 1 hour.

+Huevonious Maximus tell me about it. He wants attention when he wants attention, the rest of the time he could careless. He hates anything electronic. Cell phones, laptops, camcorders, anything that distracts me from him, brings out the 'tude. Great dog tho otherwise. Loves kids, sits still, could not ask for a better four legger.

I have the R500 and find stabilization a big disappointment. It's not very good at all, especially when zoomed in. Shooting in a dim environment is ok, noise is very evident. I originally wanted the Panasonic V710 or 510 but they were out when i needed the camcorder. I know they have much better stabilization and the noise is about the same when in dark places.
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
There seems to be two schools of thought about stabalization. I can tell you if stabalization is taking out the subtle movements of your breathing on a still shot like a sunset or a landscape in full wide, the results are pretty good. No processing by any manufacture at this time is going to smooth out jumpy, herky-jerky camera work. I haven't seen your footage, and can only comment on my own, adding zoom will multiply the affect of shake by the operator, stability processing can do nothing about this. I have found coming to rely on preprocessing in either audio or video recording to be a bad idea. results are almost always better in post production anyway. my decision on if to use stability is more about if I think I'm going to have any time to clean the footage up in Premiere or Final Cut. if the answer is no, I turn on stability and live with the results.

what did you use to film this video at the start?
@glencouls9 жыл бұрын
chloe watson I used my cellphone a Galaxy s5 active. The image quality from the phone is pretty good, there is no optical zoom, and stability processing leaves alot to be desired. If I had another camera with me I would have used it, but the two I had were on the tripod, so the cellphone video features got deployed.

Is the zoom the same?
@glencouls8 жыл бұрын
zoom is the same for both cameras, I actually felt like the focus on one of the hfr600s was more finicky then the 500, then I tried the other 600, and determined it was the same as the 500. I think there are many variables on what the camera thinks you are trying to draw in.

Samoyed. stlsamrescue.org they are wonderful dogs. Even tempered, great with kids, playful, sleepy, mellow, friendly and fluffy. now the down side, shead like crazy, terrible guard dogs, dig, and love their owners sooooooo much they are ALWAYS under foot. seriosly, they love people so much they would give your house away, so don't expect them to try to scare anybody off.
