GLFC Panel -- How To Bring The Character Out of Your Fursuit

Kira and Sharpe explain how to bring your character out of your fursuit. This not only helps you learn how to act in suit, it helps you stand out from the crowd. Someone who's active, acts to their character, etc generally attracts the attention of others around you. If your new to fursuiting and have no idea where to even start, then this video will inform you with the basics and a good starting ground!

Hey no harm with that. Personally I'm the same way sometimes. I like to be bouncy/energetic in suit and sometimes around the house or around friends, I found the move I've been suiting, the more it 'leaks' out of me, when im not suiting x3 I also have it where I'm so use to 'wagging my tail' when standing still. So at work I maybe standing still and randomly form habits *shifts weight to wag a tail that doesnt exist* xD

LOL Anyone who says they never do this is LYING. It's post-suiter behaviors -- bobbing your head while walking because you're used to adjusting your vision while in suit, in my case my horse is a horse and I bob my head extra for that, high stepping, so on. xD

InkBird having follow me eyes, toony ones, I usually dont look around as I walk because my vision Id say is 80% normal human vision...aka I see a huge amount of vision. Only thing I do in suit with my head is over gesture when I talk. Aka moving my head all over while talking, to emphasize im speaking, more.. xD even though I have a moving jaw

It comes across pretty weird/strange to them that we like to wear furry 'costumes' and run around as giant animals. Either they find it cute/cool, or very weird..and it doesnt seem to change over time. My parents still find it creepy/weird/not-right, but after months just started to ignore it xD

I remember my friend Bunsif telling me how I could improve my fursuiting the other day when she was my handler. She told me how to do the doggy pose, sitting down so you're at eye level with smaller kids, and a whole bunch of other stuff, and I was surprised that a lot of people actually came up to me and gave me hugs and high fives, even the adults. Well, thank you very very much to Kira and Sharpe for hosting this panel and to you Vexser Wuff for filming it. I had a basic knowledge of most of the things mentionned during the video, but I sure did learn a whole bunch of other that I definitely think will be useful to know when I get my first fursuit and play my character as well as animate in public for the first time. Not only that, but all those other tips and tricks Kira and Sharpe mentionned and took time to explain and made sure the audience understood. I admire their energy, dynamism, their ease with other people and to me it defintiely shows that they've had studies in the field of acting, improv and other related. I'm lucky in that I've always preferred room temperature water to cold water. I don't like ingesting extreme temperatures, so I wait until food is warm rather than hot, and water that it's cool rather than cold.

Sounds like fun :3 My first encounter was almost when It was my first time suiting around people and I completely had no idea how to go about handling things besides the typical run of getting down to their level...seeing if they can be be brave enough to high-give and if so give a little cute Yaaaay! *claps* and do cute stuffs. Yeah I only suited around friends and family so far. But that changed quickly when I went to a Fur Meet for the first time in suit. I took some of the tips from this video and put them into play. :3 This video is very helpful has I acted more so of my character then just another person in suit. XD Heck learned afew things from my friend who is awesome in his suit.

Little kids probably get terrified easily because they don't know whats going on most of the time. If some stranger, even if he/she was is in a adorable costume they don't know who that person is. Its not like "hey there how are you" its more of "why is this person walking up to my mommy?!"

many years late to comment, but when it comes to my camel pack. my suit has a really big butt. lots of padding in my digi. My camel pack i actually keep in my crotch area. odd as it sounds, the tube is long enough it would still go in my mouth and it's not visible in my drop crotch.

this helps a lot! I'm trying to build out my fursona's character past my own, because I consider them myself but I'm extremely shy, reserved and blend in with the crowd- which is not what I wanna do! So far I'm trying to imagine that they're good at dancing so that I can get more confident with that and build a more social personality from there (and join a dance comp once I make them while I'm at it) the prop thing was definitely interesting, I don't want any props to be stolen but I'm also going to have a plushy on a suit I have in mind. I'm gonna be making the pokemon Zoroark (hopefully) and have a Zorua sticking out of their hair like in the movie. I think I'll create a zipper pouch in the hair I can shove them in, and have a little "seatbelt" with a keychain at the end that I can wrap around their midsection in the pouch and clip to another keychain sewn into the pouch. Theft proof! And if they try to pull it out I may not see it but I'll sure as heck feel it.

Can you wear Furry Suits ANYWHERE? Or is it a thing convetion?

Well... I wear mine at bowling meets in 2 different cities... I've suited in wallmart... Meijers...Staples...etc. If your gona suit in a store, its best to call and ask permission. Some stores here dont care at all. Others hate it because they're afraid its gona cause a commotion and make a mess. Where as if you call things in, its not a panic alert for the store to be like okay -- why is there a group of mascots coming in? What are they doing here? What is it for? What are they going to do? etc. If you call it in you can be like Hey! We'd like to be able to go shopping in your store ( we do legitally buy stuff in the end ) and want to do it while wearing costumes to give the general public a good laugh to their day. Inform them its not for marketing -- its just for fun. That your there to still shop, not make a mess, or interfear with customer's shopping. Be aware a LOT of places have security rules of 'mask on your head = your getting talked to' The WORST thing that can happen, is security busts you and asks you to remove your head, or leave. Had that happen at wallmart and the mall. If you just pop off the head, they care less what you do, because if you go breaking stuff -- security cameras can prove whos face belongs to the suit.

I can agree. Ive always seen it as if you have a moving jaw...talk. Sure, some get it just to open a range of abilities to express emotions like Very happy! and such, however...if it moves...why not just add talking to open up a million other possibilities to react with people around you. If your jaw doesnt move, then yeah...id agree, dont talk...because then it just looks weird that theres this muffled voice coming from this creature, whos mouth isnt moving. Though, some have moving jaws, and when they talk, it hardly moves...because the maker made it for expression. Mine only moves noticeably when i talk very wide mouthed. which, works. Because if im out in a group, I need to shout / talk loudly anyways, else I wont be heard.

Sorry, just wanted to share a little story! So my school has a really old crappy mascot costume, made out of paper mache and chicken wire. The worst thing is, the head is really tall, the muzzle goes out really long, and the vision AND ventalation is terrible. Anyways, being a furry and jumping at the chance to do anything involving a fursuit, I always volenteer. Kids will always try and take the damn head off! It sucks cuz your face scratches against mesh and other stuff. One time, I was with a group of kids, all sitting on a stage and giving them hugs. Kids at my school get really violent, and they basically trapped me inbetween a group of them. Since they were on the stage and I was on the floor, they were about half a foot taller than the suit. At least three of them all grabbed for the head at once, and almost managed to get it off. I basically ran across the gym, along the side ( and at times through) of the volleyball game. The suit almost broke that day too! I love kids, until im inside a giant animal costume, and they are all trying to kill you.

+Thathyperhyena Kids + school + mascot suit + being a "lone wolf"... a sentence of death/suicidal mission even by just thinking about it :-/ You must have guts for having done that, also I guess you could have bypassed the "CUT ITS HEAD OFF!" problem by sewing in some velcro straps in the suit's internal, but I think you can't mess with school material, even if you improve it.

And we are actually going to be getting a new suit, since Im a furry, I got to choose the maker AND redesign the whole character. Im really excited to be getting a new suit.

+kat578 Lycra diveskin is a great thing for passive full body cooling undersuit, even if it just stops swet and makes it evaporate quickier, then there are much more expensive jumpsuits with an active liquid cooling system, basically the same things that is used by movie actors with heavy costumes and astronauts.

+Maop Poe hope in this year you did what I'm gonna say, but just look for some sewing courses nearby your living, look for tutorials online and start your little project after you think you're ready to try that, or just commission someone already expert if you have a bunch of money that you can use (and by a bunch I mean $1K, that's why I exposed the creating option first since it will basically cost 1/8 of the commissioning price even if the quality will inevitably be worse the first times. Just remember to follow the general cosplay common sense rule: if you can't effort that, don't)

Shadowcat9279 Yup yup! But if you have friends in the area who can just tag along as a helper, that's always good too. So they can just generally aid you with situations like letting you know if a little kid is standing behind you, etc. Most I ever fear is just running into punks / drunks. But once you learn how to handle situations or know you have a couple people to just watch over you, you can feel pretty good about it :) Feeling good while you suit really helps bring yourself out. Worrying about stuff may really distract :3

I'm only 14, and in the 8th class by now, so I don't really know if it's a good idea to wear it at school for the smaller kids. LittleLightFromDark This isn't from Vexser Wuff themself but! I'm not sure where you live, But if you're in a Jr highschool(Or just highschool) it should be fine if the teachers and principle say so! But if you're still in elementary you probably shouldn't, Many kids might get to excited and ruin your suit or some will cry and the teachers will make you take the suit off. I'm not to sure about that one, If there are 5-8 year olds in your school. But then again, Trying it out might be fun! You could be a great entertainer for them and your other classmates :3

LittleLightFromDark Ask your teachers or even the principal first. They may have a problem with masks/ hats that cover the face for obvious reasons. If they say yes; then go for it! It would be a great way to express your "furriness" and will probably have the best costume there! (Also if they say no, you can still wear you tail, feet paws, hand paws, e.c.t....)

Trying to find friends is difficult so make sure to try to find a friend you already know who is willing to go or just get a fur friend. I haven't ordered my fur suit yet, but I'm a hyper person. Despite this, I overheat easy and I'm not a active person, and I have rather short energy levels(my hyper ness tends to come in short brsts oAo) I also live in Australia, aka the land of heat ;A; Would Gatorade be best to help keep energy up? And I want to get a full suit, but I'm worried about how overheated I'd get, so I'm considering a partial instead, because the place I want to get mine does not make moveable jaws, and does not add in cooling fans. Not sure about vents though. Is there any advice you could give me on how to keep cool, aside from cooling clothes? Particularly around my face area especially?

Water would be good lol And if you sweat alot you lose electrolytes and I would recommend Powerade for that. Drink Powerade and Water

+Danny Fenton either include a bag full of water/energy drinks in with your suit or throw inside it a camelback (basically a water backpack, you can find some for cheap at airsoft stores. Also you should include glucose in the water mix, specifically simple glucose as it's pure energy for your body and you won't be so much likely suffer diabethes if you're in a 3 days convention, and last thing of all you totally should take some sweat-absorbing fresh full body underwear, so both you and your fursuit won't pass out at the end of the day.

Hey guys, I have a question. How do you get the funding for a suit? I know they are not cheap, even making your own gets pricey. I feel like I would never be able to own one because of that and that makes me sad, as it is my dream to own a fur suit some day. Any advice? There are some awesome people I would like to commission from in the future. ^^

BrinnyThe Brave Guess that depends your situation... When I was younger, I always had a part-time job..and over the course of a year I simply set X aside and ended up paying over 2K for a fullsuit. Lotta people ( who are younger ) like to just get a partial for starters. Even a cheaply made one ( new maker ) and down the road when your working say 40 hours a week, decent pay, Start saving for what you really want. I havnt really heard of anyone personally, getting a fursuit off fund-raising or anything. Most I know afforded it via their job. Some, that ment saving for a couple years..Its a hard balance. You wouldnt want to save say..300 for a cheaply made partial. and say "A year from now im gona get a fullsuit" Why not just save that 300, and put it towards the fullsuit then..?

Hi I'm a new person to the Furry Fandom and I was wondering, when in a suit and bringing water bottles, how much water bottles should be taken? My character Aniyah is bouncy and hyper so I might sweat a lot. I really don't want to get dehydrated.

As many as you can! I buy a case just in case. If supplying for an event to be beneficial to multiple suiters, multiple cases. They're pretty cheap at any grocery store. Things like gatorade / powerade can also be good.
