As someone who hasn’t seen the musical but who read the book some time ago: it’s odd to me that there is a possible interpretation of Wicked that ISN’T political? I almost think of it as a game at this point, to see the discourse around Wicked with my perspective being only informed by the book.

Until yesterday I think I'd also only read the novel. I may have caught a slime tutorial but I'm unsure

Always thought Wicked was inherently political. Like, that was almost the whole point of it lol. Thought this was a really cool video, appreciated hearing your thoughts.

Hilarious because in the novel Glinda is very much a republican. And extremely elitist and very racist

To be fair, a lot of leftists draw basically no distinction between liberals and republicans.

the musical's version of Glinda is more complex, because although she looks like she's a good person, she still chose her own self interest over what was truly right. Although I do get her perspective since there will never be a perfect system and she can't truly change anything, it's still disappointing

It's the most obvious interpretation of the story, but I'm glad someone is talking about it. Hope this video gets more views. It's well-edited. Reminds me of that scene in "Better Call Saul" where the judge tells Kim to stick with her high-paying job and just donate to charities, even though it becomes very clear later why she can't do that. I think you should make that video responding to the conservative think piece. I would watch it.

honestly my take is that voting doesnt take that much time anyway so voting for the least bad option is pretty non intrusive and you can attempt to invoke change from outside the system too. And the consequence for voting for someone that is going to do less bad things than the other person who will do the same bad things plus even more bad things is too big to have personal ethics and high minded idealism into it.

There is no way that Glinda is a liberal on any level, because she spends the second half of the play cozying up to FASCISTS. Equating Joe and Kamala with the Wizard and Madame Morrible is utterly absurd

The purpose of "reading" a work through a different lens is not to definitively say "this is exactly a 1:1 analogy in these ways." I am offering my opinion on how the work can be viewed through the specific lens that I define throughout the video. There's nothing to say you couldn't read it any other way, such as the one you described. Consider, for instance, the fact that literary scholars have done analysis of Shakespeare through a Marxist lens. Shakespeare never had any knowledge of Marx because he died 200 years before Marx's birth. And yet, there is something so fundamentally human about a lot of art that properties of a newer work can be applied to older ones. Know that we study art and literature because stories are valuable outside their immediate context!

@@xsepphie It really doesn't matter. You're free to think what you believe but it's ironic because the Nov elections take place the first week of Nov and the American public would only have access to the woke propaganda on Thanksgiving when it's too late to change their minds 🤷🏻♂️
