Ethan Slater being almost entirely cut out of the promo for this film has been so goddamn funny. He's supposed to be the comic relief of this movie and press tour, the quirky likeable funny guy, he's SPONGEBOB. He's the dude they would normally want for viral soundbites, tiktoks, stories of on-set tomfoolery, memes and some dumb one liner to put in the trailer. But because he's half of this shitshow cheating scandal, and they can't very well ice Glinda herself out of the press your, he's jsut fcking nowhere to be seen lol

I remember tracking the developments of "Wicked the Movie" in 2008. I stopped believing this would be a thing in 2013. I *will* be seeing this movie. That being said, when I see "pink and green" things paired together, I will think "oh, that's Cosmo and Wanda." There is no amount of advertising that Wicked could do to stop this from being the case.

That, and the fact that Wicked isn’t as accessible as Barbie, so as someone who only saw their first Broadway play as a teen because of Lin Manuel’s partnership with LA Unified Schools, their references can only be the most well-known aspects, so they’ve just been slapping pink and green on things, but it doesn’t make as much sense as barbie pink. And unlike Barbie where most of the partnerships tie into a doll edition, Wicked has been seemingly random

@@MoMo-rx4zr the play is on KZbin for us poor people who were curious enough to watch it. I've never been to a Wicked play, yet I'm a huge fan who's read the book and watched the play online. So, it's quite accessible.
@tatumsoward6117
@tatumsoward6117 Ай бұрын
@MoMo-rx4zr you've touched on something completely separate that bothers me about the movie: the runtime. Part 1 is as long as the entire stageplay PLUS intermission (2h 40min).Since Part 2 is going to be feature length, we're looking at a MINIMUM total runtime of 4h 10min. More likely, we will have an ~5h runtime with Part 2 being 2h. That is a long time to pay attention to a movie. Like you said, theatrical performances are a privilege to witness because not everyone has a theatre in proximity or can afford tickets. Theatre fans push for these movie adaptations because they eliminate these barriers, being cheaper and more accessible. By ramping the runtime, they have reduced that accessibility because families and students are rarely going to commit 5h to a movie. And this bums me out in particular because hot take: I don't ***love*** the Wicked soundtrack. What makes Wicked amazing is the actual story, and I can't encourage people to see it because they just can't go to Broadway. Now I'll seem like an ass because they just can't spend 5h watching a movie. Everything from the messy marketing to the runtime just makes me tired. As of writing, the perliminary reviews are in, and the movie is amazing. But I don't see this movie being something that I watch again after seeing it in theatres, and that makes me sad.

For anyone who thinks singing live while making a movie is the natural choice, please go watch Sideways's video about why the Les Mis movie music was bad. Yes, broadway stars sing 8 days a week. They are, however, not singing for 8 to 12 hours day after day to record one good take.

I think it's also that they are, yk, real singers ((theatre actors that have history singing live and in that way of singing)) versus actors who don't normally sing who are now singing live along with not following the musical super closely ((as in, they actually improvised a lot and had very harrowing scenes))

From someone who has worked in movies, you don't generally sing live because it makes editing a nightmare. Also the conditions of a movie set are bad for recording singing, as they are generally not made to disperse sound in the same way as an auditorium or a theater. You also have a shit ton of machines going from the cameras, to the lights (which do buzz), to the fans they sometimes use to simulate wind. Singing live in a movie is great for the actor. It sucks ass for production and why it's not the standard, nor should it really be. it puts unnecessary stress on the actors and makes shooting and editing the thing pointlessly complex. I get it, y'all like it... you think it's more authentic or whatever. But as a person who has worked on sets and knows loads of folks in the movie industry, this way of making a musical is a logistical nightmare and wholly unnecessary. it also makes it harder for whoever is scoring the music because you can't use a click track. It's gonna be audible.

@Tiepobadaae
@Tiepobadaae Ай бұрын
@HazelSageHP normally, I'd agree, but the musical has too long of a runtime for cinema. Theyd have to cut things out and the stage musical already cut out a HUGE amount. The 2nd half of the musical basically zooms through elphaba's rebellion so fast that you dont even actually see it. The movie will add back in what was cut, rather than adding in random new moments. So its not the same as the hobbit or twilight. At least thats what i heard. If im wrong, ill eat my words, but if not, then part 2 is warranted.
@HazelSageHP
@HazelSageHP Ай бұрын
@Tiepobadaae That's fair - there's definitely room to expand in act 2! I guess my real complaint isn't that it's two parts, it's that it is two parts with SUCH an extended run time for the first part already, you know? Two movies that were an hour and forty five, or even two hours each, I could understand, but this feels like a lot imo (though, since we don't know the runtime of the second movie, or at least I don't, this length may be less egregious than I think if the second is a more reasonable length I suppose). But it sounds like reviews are good so far, so I could absolutely be wrong! I'm still holding off on watching right now personally, but I really do hope the additions are substantive and really add to/flesh out the storyline rather than giving pointless padding out the runtime, if that makes sense! It's a great story and it deserves to be told to a wider audience, and I hope this does it justice
@Tiepobadaae
@Tiepobadaae Ай бұрын
@HazelSageHP i actually agree that act one sounds too long. While the pacing in the stage act 2 was waayy too quick (like what do we even see elphaba do as a rebel leader), act 1 was mostly fine. It does concern me how long it is.

I actually disagree with what you're saying about singing on set. Many musical movies do a mix of live singing and studio singing (which I think is the best idea), live set singing can have a lot of draw backs (looking at you les mis movie), due to microphones the singing can often times be lacking or else they'll mess up the boom mic for that shot/they can't go full out due to fear of audio feedback . It can also tire the singers voices if they're doing a lot of singing back to back. I'm not saying thats what happened on the wicked set, but acting like all movie musicals should do live singing is really weird. edit: I would recommend the video 'Why the Music in Les Misérables (2012) is Worse than you Thought' if you want to see more on why the singing in that music sucks, it touches on the live singing problem.

Wicked concerns me even more because those books are not for kids yet the musical made a PG-13 version of the story work extremely well. Making it PG will come at a cost. Are they gonna remove songs like As Long as You're Mine? What about the attempts to genocide talking animals? (RE the press about the Tom Hooper Les Mis Live Singing press) ALSO Most movie musicals have them singing live along to recorded tracks for synchronization. At least Rent did. It's also notable why the film Over the Moon sounds different from the Movie Soundtrack.

The Wicked Fan Poster was so toxic because it called out a fan for doing something relatively harmless, specifically because Cynthia posted just a fan page not the artist. This puts undue pressure on just some person on the Internet who doesn't have a PR team. Sidenote, I do wish more mainstream movie posters were stylized art. Like how the OG Star Wars posters were drawings of the characters faces. The AI fight thing is weird. And yeah, I might have seen it but the promo taking about a Year? Ugh. Please. You're overwhelming me. It's like Presidential campaigns taking longer and longer, something we won't have to deal with anymore.

I don’t think Taylor Louderman was necessarily saying they only cast Ariana because she’s a popstar, she very easily could’ve been saying that they cast to incredibly talented women and so why would she think she has a chance against them? Ariana was clearly cast both because she is talented, we can see in the promos that she is a really fabulous Galinda, I don’t think she would’ve been considered at all if she couldn’t actually do the role but there are lots of Broadway performers that are just as talented as Ariana, and she beat them out because she’s Ariana Grande and she was going to bring in tickets.

Is it just me who thinks Ariana isn’t a good choice for Galinda simply because of her reputation? Like the entire point of the show is close female friendship, and she’s literally known as “not a girl’s girl” lol

I feel like she just doesnt fit Glinda's essence. She has the range but i think Amanda Seyfriend wouldve been a better fit personality and stage presence wise. Ari looks washed out and sickly as Glinda, and to be very frankly honest, her surgeries make all her facial expressions look like shes confused and concerned all the time so her acting feels very flat. Amanda wouldve pulled off the blonde and pink like a Barbie and wouldve been a warmer/bubblier presence imo.

Being trauma bonded means feeling connected to your abuser, like Stockholm Syndrome! It's a word that exists to explain why it's not easy to leave an abusive relationship, for example. People bonding through an audition process is not trauma bonding, it's just bonding! Sharing an intense experience with other people is not in itself a bad thing at all, it's just having a shared experience

I think a lot of the wicked products being sold are tailored specifically for the movie. Like the butterfly on the Stanley cup, there was an interview with a designer for the movie who talked about the inclusion of butterflies as sort of a symbol for Glinda. That purple sock is the same color as Galinda’s school uniform in the movie but not the stage production.

I had been waiting for YEARS for this musical to be made into a movie. And I have to be completely honest, the way it was rolled out, this promotion was too much. As a hardcore Wicked fan, the over-the-top promotion, the cheating scandal, and honestly not feeling like AG should have gotten this role-- has dampened my enthusiasm for the movie. I still went to see it last night for the early access, and AG was serviceable, i mean she better be decent because she's been begging for this role for years, and if you hate that i said that, idc. Go scream into the void about it. BUT CE is a KNOCKOUT!!! Her voice moved me to tears and I really enjoyed Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero as well. I'm just sad this is the way they did this after all these years, it's a shame
