Security makes things harder and less convenient - too much of a burden for the staff they can underpay. You want sharp staff who can handle MFA, use password managers and rotate secrets regularly, recognise phishing emails etc. on top of doing the actual job, well you are SOL because people who can handle that have better options than to work for you. There's a money/greed side to this to be discussed. People in public healthcare are overworked, underpaid and that breeds apathy. Apathy is a hacker's best friend.

I've been in IT my entire adult-life. When I got started, occupation in IT was dependent on your contractual acceptance of risks. Should a server go down, or should someone breach the security then you either fix it or eff-off. Initially that wasn't a problem and I happily shouldered that risk, but in the last 5 years I've soured to the idea. These cyber criminals are as young as 12 years old, we used to call them script-kitties. Today, it's worse.. not better. With the advent of generative AI, these low-skill hackers don't even need to know how to code and I'm not having it. I'm gone, and with me all my many years of experience in IT security is washed down the drain. If you ay-holes treated your effing IT guys better on the contractual level, supported us better, funded our departments better.. then maybe you wouldn't have lost (in my opinion) an incredible white-hat. I rarely meet anyone who is as competent as I am.. and here I am branching off into additive manufacturing. Because I have options in front of me that don't involve being the digital scapegoat for whatever corporate or medical provider or bank. Up yours and thanks for fn nothing!

I'm sorry to all the current victims but this is but a taste of where things are headed. Every critical service should have offline redundancies built, but they don't because it costs money. Building nearly all of modern society on top of the internet at the pace we did and with as little regard for safety as we had was a mistake.
