citizens of Singapore are sensible & better educated than most places. "freedom of speech" aatted by foreign ngo's, gave rise to 2019 in HK. About the election in previous years : it's garbage elected garbage ; majority of voters were qualified but without the most basic qualities.
I'm a Singaporean and I'm proud of my country achievement and society harmony. I enjoy the public transport system, I stay in a flat that I can afford and I enjoy the varieties of food available in Singapore. I feel safe even when I return home at mid nite. I had my overseas holiday 1-2 times a year. We can express our thought freely and we fully aware that riot and boycott are not to our advantage. We prefer to discuss it and find solutions. We enjoy the freedom, efficient management and safe society...and I call it my home, Singapore.

This has become a classic interview. It was 9 years ago in 2015, the year LKY passed on. We will continue to do well post LKY seeing Mr Tharman astuteness on this world stage. This interview has being reposted across many countries over the years. Personally I have watched it several times, each time in full, including this one. Mr Tharman is now our President, elected by an overwhelming majority of over 70%. We did not reach where we are today by chance. We vote for leaders of high calibre and qualities, not self-interested politicians.
I’m a Singaporean and in my 60s now. I never consider that I’m living under an authoritarian government. I rather have safety, etc than the so-called freedom that the West advocates.

Yes, the host was very rude and domineering looking down thinking my President can be swallowed by his whims and fancies. He has forgotten or don't even have that basic courteously to host a symposium of this level. He even cut off an Indian participant. He talked too much wasting a lot of time, thus rushing for time to keep the session on time. He is an utter nonsense and a poor representation of whoever was from. Mr. Host, come Singapore and you will have lots to learn from we Singaporeans.

This interview happened in 2015 and it's now 2024. Just look at the facts. Singapore continued to prosper. None of what the BBC reporter tried to suggest might happen to Singapore actually happened. On the other hand, UK definitely became worse. As Tharman said - humility is good. Learn from others. Don't keep thinking the west has all the answers and everyone else embrace your ideologies.

@skychaos8710 ай бұрын
@PeterCheung-qx2si There is no such thing as freedom of speech in any part of the world. Even in UK people get jailed for comments they make on social media. In fact, nothing is free in this world. What matters is giving people a good living standard and conditions. And to achieve that by sensible management and control. Like law and order that is fair. Western countries especially the more liberal ones that lost the balance of fair laws see increase in crime rates, infant mortality, police brutality etc.. you name it. Yes, their press are "freer", but at what cost? Live and let live, if you truly believe in freedom of choice then let other countries do their own thing, have their own system. Countries that do well will progress and countries that don't will see the lost of talents moving out of it. Fact is that more and more westerners that have explored the world begins to migrate and move out of their own country.

As to the host's last question whether Singapore will lose out to many emerging Asian countries on foreign investments and interest, Mr. Tharman got it right that Singapore's strength is it has always strives on competitions from other countries. Many people years ago had doubts that Singapore will continue to develop and prosper but it has. This symposium was hosted in 2015 and almost 10 years later, Singapore is still a magnet for foreign investments, albeit these are the value-added industries and services. Singapore with good and intelligent government will continue to thrive.

Singapore is the best role model for the West to learn how the government successfully stabilizes its society and enables its people living in harmony. Rather, the host is the prime example of majority western people never realize their own failures and change themselves, they only know to criticize one who have been making excellent results may be due to jealousy. It is a shame that the West continues to act in such way for decades with no change. These countries have already shown declines in last two decades and they don’t see as wake-up calls yet.

I grew up in Singapore wishing that we had more freedom of speech, that people didn't fear criticising the government openly. But now I understand the dangers of free speech when I look at what is happening in the US and the UK. Politicians and celebrities can tell lies, trigger chaos in the society and not be taken to task. It gets to a point where the common man cannot tell what is true and what is false. This is a recipe for a divided society which is a disaster! That is not the kind of society I want for Singapore either.
