Hank and Mark Beaumont are no strangers to epic cycling challenges and breaking world records. But, this time, we set them a challenge that takes things to a whole new level. Cycling from Lands End to John o' Groats in a time trial relay. Riding 1 hour on, 1 hour off, full gas for almost 2 full days is enough to bring anyone to their knees; even the kings of pain themselves. Would they be able to complete this truly epic ride?

This was brilliant. Just hearing Hank, he sounded just about dead. What a stunning pace to maintain over such a distance. Why not do something like 3 hours on, 3 off? Wouldn’t that give you more rest, or is that not allowed?

@@Wargwarn I pay £0 to watch it. Therefore it is free to me. The advertisers pay KZbin - of which a portion goes to GCN which is how they make their money. I however am watching it for free.
@Wargwarn

@@joewallace7552 time is money, hence the phrase 'spending time'. You spend time watching ads, therefore it's not free, unless of course you value your time at £0.
@Mensch-et3xm
@Mensch-et3xm 3 жыл бұрын
@@Wargwarn That's a superficial view on things from my perspective. Yes, I need time to make money which I need to buy food to survive. But not every second of my day has a financial equivalent. When I'm sitting at home in the evening and I watch a video that's 30 seconds longer (because of the ad) than I expected, I didn't spend money. I couldn't have made money from those 30 seconds in any realistic way in my life. To be honest I didn't even spend the 30 seconds watching the ad. I just think about something about which I didn't have thought had I been working (for money) that time. Your statement that "you value your time at £0" just because you consider watching an ad plus a video free (of charge, which it is) is too big of a conclusion.

Chapeau. I did JOGLE with a pal when I was 18 years old in 12 days in the mid-90s. On MTBs. With no helmets. We just slept in bushes, in fields (woke up several times with cows sniffing my head), on beaches, and on the last night on a central reservation roundabout next to a helicopter airport. Oh, how times have changed! We realised three-quarters of the way through Scotland that out guidebook was taking us to local points of interest like churches and stone circles. Needless to say our route ended up being 1660km. Loved it though!

@@davidgfisher Thats just how you tend to sit when you are on tri bars for longer time. Your body automaticly tries to put you straight above the pedals as you get more power out this way. The UCI rules for time trials state that the saddle needs to be 5cm behind that axle thats why most bikes are set up this way, although this is not the most efficient position to be in hence you move forward on the saddle.

The evening before I started walking Lands End to John O'Groats a few years ago, I shared a hostel room in Penzance with a cyclist who planned to do the same on a bike, a tough looking fellow. He said he'll do it in six days, which sounded crazy to me. It eventually took me about twelve weeks to get to the other end. Admittedly it's a bit longer on trails, closer to 2,000 km.

Wow incredible effort guys, well done! I just completed my LEJOG ride yesterday. 1006 miles pedalled solo, approximately 88 hours riding spread over 16 days. Not the fastest but that was never the point. I am proud to say I did the whole distance without cheating i.e. hopping on a bus, taxi etc. Still, can't imagine how anyone could do this in one sitting - it is a hell of a long way! Looks like you had near perfect conditions. I had a headwind all the way to Newcastle (yeah from Lands End!) A couple of similarities I found noted from this video: time in the saddle feels like an eternity until you step off, roadblocks / road closures occur more frequently than you'd think, and it is amazing how when things are going bad, they remarkably, suddenly get better.

Congratulations! Brings back memories of MY "epic ride" along the rolling hills of the coast of Lake Michigan north from Milwaukee, Wisconsin into picturesque Door County 164 miles non-stop. We camped overnight enjoying the sounds of the lake shore, the winds off of the lake and then riding the 164 miles back after sightseeing the next day on the Peninsula. This a VERY popular vacation mecca. This was done during the summer of 1965 and I was working in a small "ma and pa" bike store. I owned a white Raleigh Pro and several other road bikes since. My last bike I purchased was in 1981. A custom Gary Klein "six speed" in a 1957 Cadillac color called "dusty rose pink". It had inverted Modolo side-pull brakes, a Zeus rear derailleur, High E hubs "sew-up" tires, nylon Unicantor track seat. I'm now 74.

Just finished my second LEJOG a couple of weeks ago - it was the support team and fellow riders that make it achievable, the route planning that shows the scenery off to its max (no dual carriageways), and a bit of training that makes it physically possible to complete and enjoy. The route was over 1,600km but it also took a lot longer than 40 hours. A lot longer. Thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it - don't put it on your bucket list, put it on your 'I will definitely do this within 12 months' list.

I did LEJOG in my 20's back in 1984 on a 10 speed Peugeot Columbus 103 tubing frame in 9 days ...just the bike a saddle bag ( tools and rain gear ) and my bank card ..I stopped at the first B & B I saw each evening as soon as id hit the 100 miles for the day......worst days ..Lands end to Oakhampton......Shap Hill....A9 in general...and Berridale near the end.....but I didn't stop on any of them....so brilliant memories here ...esp of the Dalwhinnie sign post !...great job guys .and well done to the whole team for a great production.

The effect is so much faster in a 30 minute video, of course. But watching Hank and Mark fall apart mentally and physically as the ride goes on is really gripping viewing. It's joyous and wonderful watching what humans can do sometimes.

@@gcn When we're all travelling again... One I've seen done once before by a group of good amateur riders. Melbourne Cricket Ground to Adelaide Oval - as close to the coast as possible - 4 riders , 3 sunrises. All riding, not relay style. No support. Start the as the dawn is coming up on the end of 48 hours-ish. Almost exactly 1000km. Sights include the MCG, The Great Ocean Road, the Otway Ranges, Warnambool (end of the worlds second oldest continually held bike race, the Melbourne to Warnambool), the forest country of Western Victoria, Mount Gambier, The Limestone Coast (loads of wind!), The Coorong, Lakes Albert and Alexandrina (more wind!), the Adelaide Hills then the drop into Adelaide. A proper lads & ladies weekend away really!

Haven’t done this route - yet! It’s on the ‘to do’ list but I’m just trying to build up to the point where I could realistically do it in 7 days, if possible. Was hoping I might be able to try this summer, but I think it’s one for 2022, partly COVID partly because my 250 and 500-milers have been huge learning curves about the kit I need (to go unsupported) but it’s something I’m keen to do, from John O’Groats so I can end in Cornwall. I’m also aware that’s considered the harder way to do it, but it just makes the logistics of going unsupported so much easier to manage.

It sure does take a hell of a lot of planning to try a ride like LEJOG - especially if you're pushing to do it as quick as you can. Hank and Mark were lucky enough to have an amazing support team with them without whom, this quite simply wouldn't have been possible. Best of luck with your ride, Michael; it's a truly epic route, so make sure you enjoy it!

I did JOGLE 5 years ago and took 8 1/2 days. I had a friend drive a car with spares and for company but rode by myself. We used youth hostels and cheap B&Bs and although I cried everyday it was worth it. Did it on a Boardman full carbon and can still feel the seat up my bottom... You can do it!
