steve yankou I rode to a family get together and had my sister in law spill my Oltre last night and scuff it here and there. Thought I might tear up for a second but then saw this video and felt better about my now "well loved" shifter and derailleur. Scuffs just mean we are using them, not just hanging them in the garage and letting the bikes gather dust.

Another reason to not have too much of a gap between chainrings is that the rear derailleur will not be able to handle the chain length difference (chain will be too loose on small ring/smaller cogs). Re: cassettes, Shimano also makes 12/25 and 12/28 (DA only for 12/28). These should be preferred for flatter courses as you get a 18T cog (on 12/25) or 16T cog (on 12/28) which you do not get with the more common 11/28 or 11/25. This gives the rider a smaller gear jump in the midrange so that he can more easily find the perfect gear on flatter terrain. This of course also assumes the 11T is not needed.

Seeing that brilliant sprint shifter hack on the FDJ bike makes me regret A. Spending $700 USD on integrated bars that can't accept aero bars and B. A bigger crank sprocket like a TT 58 is that there are more chain links being cranked on that 58 sprocket thereby less potential for a slippage failure compared to a smaller 53 sprocket, for example. Can't believe you missed that point.

That "not technically sponsored" comment at the start is confusingly vague and unhelpful. There's no such thing as "technically sponsored": either you're sponsored or you're not. The point is that the seven listed sponsored teams are given Shimano gear in exchange for advertising; any other team is free to buy Shimano equipment on the open market, just like you and me -- but they have to pay for it, just like you and me.

I'm still a bit surprised, that Sky/Ineos isn't using the Ceramicspeed OSPW System. I know the difference is pretty much negligible, but if you put a 58 tooth chainring on the front, you can also take the extra step and get the oversized pulley wheels. They are probably not sponsored by Ceramicspeed, but I'm pretty sure they can afford it. But maybe Shimano says, if you want to be sponsored by us, you are not allowed to change the pulley wheels. The same for the chain, instead of using a the Ceramicspeed-Chain, they use normal Shimano chains.

Do bigger chainrings really mean less friction in the chain? I can not belive it. Yes, the bending angles for each link are smaller, but there are more links bent at the same time. The total angle is the same no matter the size of the chainring (or jockey wheel). Are there sufficient studies prooving this assumption of less friction with bigger chainrings?
@topher.m
@topher.m 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Plenty of studies that demonstrate the efficiency loss due to the tighter radius' of chains. Not just though cycling, it's a known problem in all mechanical systems such as pulleys, gearing and belts.
@ethositachi
@ethositachi 5 жыл бұрын
More links at the same time is a red herring, as all links in the chain pass around the sprocket and each of them is bent to a certain angle with its neighbors and then straightened out again. How many are bent at the same time doesn't matter. Further, if you consider engagement with the teeth of the sprockets and the forces on the pins and rollers of the chain, it is actually better to have the force transferred from more links to the sprocket than less, again favoring larger sprockets. At some point of course large cassettes, longer chains and derailleurs etc become heavier and unwieldy, so there's a balance to be met.
@miguelketel
@miguelketel 5 жыл бұрын
In addition to these other comments, the chainsets are not optimised for a 58-11. A normal cadence, let's say 95, with this gearing would result in a speeds over 60kmph. More so, they're better used combined with the second or third sprocket (12 and 13 for speeds of 54-58 kmph with the same cadence), for better chain alignment. A 58-11 will put strain on the chain for not being very well aligned, using the second or third sprocket of the cassette will resolve this problem and will save a percentage of friction in the drivetrain.

Why sram made smaller chainring and cogs? such as 50t chainring and 10s cogs. They make more flections.
@miguelketel
@miguelketel 5 жыл бұрын
That's not because of friction optimisation, but it gives more options when using a 1x system. A 10-42 cassette paired with a 50 chain ring would give you approximately the same gearing range as an 53 chain ring with an 11 tooth sprocket to an 38 chain ring with 38 tooth sprocket. So on the plus side, you'll have more gearing range, plus all the benefits of using a 1x system. On the downside, that gaps between gears, and so cadence optimisation will suffer, as well as it will give more friction due to cross-chaining.
