@alexanderjames69344 жыл бұрын
avoid technical descends. wehen i plan a rout in rain i try to ride up the more technical climb and go down the easier side.if you live in a less hilly area u can maybe avoid climbs and the resulting descends alltogether. additionally lower ur tryre pressure by maybe .5 or 1 bar. Ride shorter and harder to stay warm if you dont have expensive winter/rain clothing.
@sylvainlefebvre80994 жыл бұрын
I have ben riding in the rain more than my share. - the splash from the road is not sterile water: wear eye protection. Remember it when taking a sip from the bidon (have a protective shield on the nipple) - metal and paint are splippery, but the road itself can be like ice if it didn't rain for a while (remember Paris-Nice of this year) - have mud guard for you and the others - don't ride in puddle, you don't know what in it, nor where the bottom is. - wear a good rain jacket that will make you visible (the clear plastic ones are about the same colour as the sprays from motor vehicles, not a good choice) - don't get cold - enjoy the ride. I won't kill you and the next time you are having adverse condition you can remember that one you rode through.

1. Full-coverage fenders with mudflaps to keep as much of the rain from flying off the ground and on to you/your shoes/your bike. 2. Bright lights fore and aft, to see where you're going and to help others see you. Also, retroreflective tape, front and rear. 3. Never ride through puddles. It may be skin deep, or it may be a wheel-swallowing, ride-ending pothole. Don't take chances on riding through them. How do you see them? See # 2. 4. Anti-slip tape on the brake levers and possibly on the grips, to keep your fingers from slipping off at an inopportune moment. Look for 3M 50-mm-wide anti-slip tape, meant for bathtubs/showers.

I commute 24/7 to an emergency services job all year ‘round ... it’s just about being prepared with kit options and I store options at home and at work so I’m not carrying a massive bag every day to cater for all weathers. I use a gravel bike as my commuter so I have wide, 38mm tyres with good treads for even the worst weathers and it worked brilliantly for me last winter, so will be going again this year and have invested in some baselayers for extra kit options.

Once a time many years ago, I bought some fantastic tires with yellow side walls that matched my banana yellow paint job. They were narrow and slick, absolutely no grip at all, they looked fantastic and I didn't pay that much attention to the fact they weren't wet weather tires. I always had my tireds at 6 bar / 90psi. So I was flying down this hill towards a massive roundabout at about 35mph with the rain hammering it down so hard it was bouncing back up. Nothing was coming at the roundabout so instead of slowing down I just leaned into the turn and end up with the bike sliding way from me. Maybe I should have paid more attention to my tire choice, on the other hand the yellow side walls really looked amazing with my banana yellow frame.

When doing day trips (~10 hours on the road) I prefer to avoid rainy days, too. No matter what kind of high tech gear in about 1 hour you get wet. Not soaking wet, but wet anyway, also from sweating. And if it rains in the morning on a colder day then you stay wet all day long. And when it rains you ride somewhat slower. So you might end up riding in the night at the end of the day. And then in the dark you ride slower too, even if it's dry. And then, from time to time you need to open up your saddle bags - that's when the water gets in even if they are rubber coated and really 100% water proof. And then, you can't use your Smartphone with GPS navigation properly if you wear gloves, or if there are drops of water on the screen - that's how water gets into your gloves. And you can't charge the Smartphone if the connectors get wet. And everything takes longer and, and, and... and it's just not fun :-(

I shed lots of skin, ruined clothes, patched myself up rather than getting medical care, and after going to dr a week later discovering I had picked up 2 kinds of very very nasty bacteria which required 2 rounds of heavy antibiotics to get rid of. Commuting all year round, rain is inevitable. The main challenge to me is to avoid soggy socks. Even with overshoes, rain tends to trickle down my legs and into the shoes. No a pleasant sensation, and even worse when I put them back on for my return trip. Same for cattle grids, they're everywhere round me in Wales

3:45 onwards "here in the UK our wet roads aren't too bad, but the silky smooth roads that we love in Europe..." two things: 1. which continent do you think the UK is part of, 2. silky smooth roads, in Belgium?!?
@el0j2 жыл бұрын
1. brexit 2. there are countries other than belgium
@frazergoodwin49452 жыл бұрын
@@el0j Brexit moved the UK to which continent - Africa, Asia or Australia perhaps? And you're right roads in Moldova aren't very silky smooth either...

What about after the ride? Do you need to wipe down the bike / chain / etc? I don't ride in the rain, because I'm worried about it ruining the different parts -- mostly the chain, gears, and brakes. One time my brakes got real squeaky, not sure if it was due to the water or something else.

I like to crash 🤕 in the rain... 2 for 2 thus far... once my fault (darn those disc brakes) and once not (train tracks took out the bunch). I’m pretty much done with going out to ride when it’s wet. Getting caught out... just turn around and head back to the car straight away : )

If I know in advance that it’s going to be raining I take the dedicated rain bike: full mudguards, sealed cartridge BB, drum brakes and single speed. Ne getting wet is no problem, I dry off, but can’t stand the wear and tear on sensitive road bike components.

Try riding in hail storm and having rider and bike iced with a layer of ice rain ride is easy

I like riding in the rain. I just don't like cleaning the bike. I have a bike in the shop getting new wheel bearings!

Worst things when riding in the wet, eyes sting and water dribbles from every part of bike. Of course bike comes first so after every wet ride bike is dried with a tea-towel and hair drier then lubed. Then and only then can I dry my eyes!

While riding in the wet and it’s still raining, cycling cap is a must. It really helps stop the water from dripping into your eyes. Yes, even when you’re wearing those oversized cycling sunglasses, water can still drips to your eyes. It happened to me and I was forced to stop riding because I just couldn’t see anything.

If you put a little vaseline on your eyebrows it also helps

Winter does not mean wet here in Montreal. It means bitter cold, ice and snow. More suited to fat bike than road bike.

The dreaded noise of rim pads scratching your new shiny carbon wheels due to the rain..... Well that is why we have a cheap set of alloy wheels on standby with matching rubber pads lol.

Or get disc. They work better and more reliably in the rain and accompanying sludge

2 tips you missed: 1. Take spare dry gloves in winter. On long rides all gloves leak and then you've got cold wet hands. 2. Lower tyre pressure to minimum recommended to improve grip if you normally ride at max pressure.
@ryand1413 жыл бұрын
Good tips. But if they're thermal gloves, your hands aren't getting cold.

Road riding in the rain isn't really any fun now it's it? Let's be honest. It's pretty bloody dangerous and it's not like the world is more attractive under a grey canopy. Mountain biking in the rain? Now that is fun.
