Went vegan 16 years ago. My borderline high blood pressure went to normal. My cholesterol of almost 300 went to 88. It does have definite overall health benefits. I don't think it would make you perform better. I didn't ride before I went vegan so I can't say for sure. It won't hurt you, but I don't think you will see an increase. You may see an indirect benefit though because you tend to source more whole foods and less processed, so that will help no matter what your diet is.

I think you hit the nail on the head. It's easier to eat a healthier more nutritious vegan diet than not - I have been vegan for 3 years and completed 2 IronMan tri's in that time - definitely helped me with recovery during training. Having said that with the growing popularity of veganism, there are more and more processed and fast foods being made available which could negate some of those nutritious benefits if you are not careful. Still you can be reasonably sure that your broccoli hasn't been injected with daily antibiotics to make it fatter quicker :)

I have been plant-based for over a year now and it has definitely helped in recovery and most importantly it has built up my immune system. I also do not get that pressure in my chest when doing super hard efforts. It isn't night and day for people who exercise a lot but you will feel better quicker and be able to put in efforts for longer. Also it is easier to keep the weight off in the off-season so improvement with power to weight ratio. There is also a study that shows endurance athletes are actually more susceptible to atherosclerosis which is shocking, but the plant based diet prevents that as well so win win. Look at the Blue-Zones, almost all of them are 5% or less of animal products. That in itself should be pretty convincing for everyone. Thanks for the great videos!

Animal protein provides a fuller body of Amino acids, however once you ditch the need for 20' biceps, the like of sclerotic accumulation in a plant-based diet is clearly superior for longevity and suppleness. I don't think people realise how upper levels of protein (60-100g) only serves a purpose for professional athletes. Most people will simply accumulate bodily baggage by flying so close to the sun. Getting a full profile of AA's is really hard unless you have seaweed, whey powder or lentils in abundance, this is not easy. For plant-based diets to evolve from fad diets or niche-eties, I think supermarkets which prioritise the efflux of such products needs to take a hold in the UK the way whole foods has in America.

Some facts from my experience after 5 years vegan: before my FTP was 4,2 W/Kg, with "normal" healthy diet. Two months training on road bike vegan I got to 4,6. With a 90 % raw vegan diet, BMI of lower 21, I almost reached 5 W/Kg in my peak phase. Before I rode BMX for 15 years, almost professional, 4 hours a day in my early years, so those numbers are easy to explain (over all just 15.000k on the road bike). But the main fact about all is: you have to do everything you can to get some percent of improvement long term over the years. Without a basic fundament of training and nutritional experience it surely doesn´t work for most of the people. It´s a long road to go, to have a cleaner, lighter body, with more performance.

I've been getting more into raw, as well. It's a nice addition to my diet tool box. The challenge for me with raw is absorbing enough carbs. When I eat raw, I can feel my digestion working harder to get through it. Not that that's a bad thing, necessarily, but if I'm in the middle of a big training block, I need massive carbs that I can absorb without my digestion having to do too much extra work for it. My raw vegan guru keeps pushing fats on me, which would be fine if I weren't doing burning 1200 calories a day in training. But there's only so much fat from nuts and avocados I can take in any given meal. Without my steel-cut oats in the morning and brown rice at lunch, I'd have a hard time getting enough fuel to power my workouts and races.

100% there is a boost in performance when people take my vegan diet protocol onboard. Why? 1. Blood volume goes up 2. Body fat goes down 3. Iron and b12 go up 4. Insulin sensitivity goes up 5. Muscle glycogen goes up. Most vegan diets will have you floored on the ground because they are carb deficient and contain too much fat. Fat blunts insulin sensitivity and causes red blood cell aggregation. I applaud Nigel for being open minded and backing vegan options. Thing is though he has never done epic rides so doesnt understand how the body feels on either dietary choices. He can only go with what he reads vs what is personally experienced. That is common for people who go to university.

@@owenhunt i can't find this soy protein claim in a replicable study. I assumed you meant soy protein isolate, which indeed is not too great, since it may act as a tumor growth gene in rare cases. But, in those I found, it actually lowered blood pressure. Still, if you need a takeaway, don't focus on single ingredients in your diet, rather on the big picture: loads of whole plant foods, legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Even if a single ingredient might potentially cause an undesirable outcome on its own, you're still doing LOADS better than on the standard american/european diet. Fun fact: only ~3% of the population reaches the minimal necessary amount of fiber (30g). Try focussing on that. Studies found that focussing on Fiber, instead of 12 parameters like salt, meat...., subjects reached higher fibre goals and also did great on those other parameters just by default.
@owenhunt4 жыл бұрын
@@duschinger Fibre obviously improves bodily absorption of all nutrients. How to achieve this is something I believe requires plenty of rice, oat, pasta and leaf consumption. I'm guessing 500g of kale is still only about 20g of fibre. As for soy protein, if I remember the substance breaks down like a synthetic rubber, rather than being chunky like the fibrous texture of chicken or turkey. Therefore trace amounts of soy can really clog the arteries over a lifetime. It's a very popular warning about soy protein that consumption is associated with arterial hardening.

@F1awless4 жыл бұрын
The game changers is heavily biased and the "science" to backup the claims is heavily cherry picked and based largely on extremely weak correlations observed in epidemiological studies (glorified surveys with numerous confounding factors and inherent limitations). While at a surface level it seems convincing the evidence is non existent, just as stated by GCNs guest. James Wilks bullied Chris Kresser and character assassinated him however he didn't prove any of the core claims / insinuations about animal products that were in the film. Finally, the victories that he clung on to, such as B12 were also flawed. James cited a study to support the assertion that humans can obtain sufficient B12 from unwashed vegetables, the study actually showed that a population obtained sufficient B12 because they grew vegetables in night soil (human manure). The human body produces B12 in the digestive tract which we cannot absorb, unless we eat our own faeces as above, or eat animal products, or supplement. These are the types of references the game changers relies on.

Going vegan is a game changer for anyone that’s been eating animal based foods. It’s our default. It’s what we were meant to eat. The occasional steak in worst case scenarios when proper nutrition is not around won’t kill you, but it’s definitely not a healthy long term choice. There’s more than enough scientific evidence (by non meat and dairy industry lobbyists) pointing towards plant based diets being the healthiest thing you can do to your body.

Finally some common sense about food. It’s not the foods that you don’t eat that make you healthy, it’s the foods you do eat. The benefits come from getting enough of the right stuff, assuming a healthy, balanced approach and appropriate calorie levels. Everyone knows eating a lot of plant based foods is best for you. Who would argue with that? So say I eat plant based but then at each meal throw in a slice of cheese, an egg, or maybe some chicken at dinner. It's important to understand that all of this guy's qualifying remarks "assuming they're not deficient" also applies to people pushing vegan. The first critical thing to do is to figure out how well your "structured" diet is addressing your current needs and objectives. Very few people are ready to state unequivocally that they are ready to experience gains by going all vegan. Better to keep very detailed records of your current current diet (and 24*7 exertion tracking) and then try to calculate deficiencies by lab tests and looking at performance changes from work sessions, like like changes in your HR curve relative to power curve when you test incremental changes in your structured diet. Getting branched-chain amino acids right, and critically, the timing of ingestion, should probably be the number one goal. The main reason is that if you get your BCAAs optimized (and hydrate properly) your appetite will help you feel your way to the next thing to test. You might not need to change anything else. Only then should you care about whether you're eating "meat" for breakfast or beans, or whey protein in your coffee (if not a mix from all of the above), or whatever. Casually throwing around terms like "vegan" leads people away from finding out wise, testable changes. The question itself "Is going vegan a game changer?" is mendacious demagoguery.

Vegan diets maybe popular but there is a difference between ethical and nutrition 1) plant-based diets (PBD) usually involved high carbs and eventually leads to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, do your lab test to understand the real picture 2) healthy is not defined by body size but rather markers such as inflammation (CRP), blood cells count, insulin resistance, cholesterol levels (TG and HDL, LDL is not an important biomarker), blood pressure and heart rate (including heart variability) are better indicators of health. 3) PBD need to supplement because they lack the bioavailability of nutrients (b12, omega3 EPA and DHA, vitamin K2,), etc… 4) With PBD you need to use the bathroom more often because of the huge volume of food and have a slower recovery post exercise 5) with PBD you can lose weight but there are enough health issues that may arise, just watch ex-vegan on youtube 6) with PBD you need to eat more often to survive/perform on the bike, if you eat meat you can eat 1-2x/day, you save money and time 7) with PBD, you can expect lower testerone levels 8) with PBD bone health is weaker than meat based 9) eating the new ultra-processed lab products based on soybean oil and processed with chemicals added with 20 other ingredients, not sure of the long term results, they have done any The list is too long and I want plant based before, now I have recovered my health with meat All these points are supported by science, do you own due diligence

Dust and other particle inhalation and it's risks have been extensively studied, especially in occupational settings. Dust particles tend to range from 1-100 microns in diameter; an N95 mask will filter out 95% of particles that are 0.3 microns, while a bandanna or buff will filter out only the largest particles. A study comparing them found that an N95 mask was 89.6% efficient at filtering particles with a median diameter of 1.6 uM while a bandanna was 11.3% efficient. It's important to also take into account that your respiration rate will be higher while exercising, increasing your exposure. For pro cyclist it shouldnt matter, there is an entire team behind it taking care of a balanced diet and monitoring the riders health. For amateurs i guess its possible if you are a dedicated vegan that has a basic understanding of nutrition and carefully monitor your intake but in general it's easier for a non vegan to balance their meals.

I’ve been plant based three years. Do it ! You are doing an injustice to yourself if you don’t. Make life easy for yourself........

I'm impressed, a very reasonable and logical stance on vegetarian vs omnivore. As always, well played GCN

I think the question was answered by Dan in the beginning by saying nearly all pro cyclists are omnivores. This vegan stuff is silly. I think Eddy Merckx (spelling?) would eat steak before rides. It would for sure boost his iron.

guys.. eat everything in moderation. For those guys who claims that eating meat increase the cholesterol level maybe because you eat it a little bit too much. eat a healthy based diet, rather claiming this type of diet is good and this type of diet is bad. as the nutritional says, not all vegan diet is nutritional and not all meat based diet is bad for you. think before you eat. beer is 100 percent vegan yet if you take it toooo much you will be exposed to many kind of diseases too. so the key is indeed take all in moderation.
