I did a 32-hour Ironman training week in 2006, topped off with a 199.8 (seriously - I thought I'd made it to 200, but only realised it was a smidge off after I'd dismounted and carried my bike up to my flat) km. ride with three major mountain passes followed by a 15 km. "brick" run that Sunday.

I used to do a 9-day training camp (from home) every February, scheduling 5 to 6 hour rides for every day from Saturday through to the following Sunday, whatever the weather. Then it was off to Majorca for 2 weeks in March. And I was still only a 2nd Cat!!!!

My best effort ever was 1000 miles in the month of June, 2013. In the middle of the penultimate week, car backed out of it's driveway and I collided with it. My front wheel was pinned under it rear wheel. I borrowed a wheel from my LBS and ended up getting the 1000th mile on June 30th. I was 63 that year.

Biggest days for me were about 420 km/week, for a little more than a month in São Paulo, Brazil. No open roads, all in-city commuting. Elevation wasn't anything to write home about, but the constant effort of stopping at traffic lights and accelerating again to keep up with the cars made up for some of that.

Given the many medical procedures for professional cyclists related to arteries, perhaps GCN could do a feature on issues like external Iliac Artery Endofibrosis? Many cyclists, speed skaters and runners suffer from this and the issue has often been un/misdiagnosed. More and more athletes turn to surgery. Understanding the issue and recognizing symptoms could help a lot of athletes suffering at the moment...

My biggest week (8 days, actually) was when doing the Festive 500 in 2013 when I rode 513 miles (826km) over 37.5 hours of moderately hilly riding.
@grantbeerling43964 жыл бұрын
As an old git ex-marathon/ultra runner. The issue is without a doubt injury, plus track sessions may only last an hour, but 200-1600m reps a) killer. b)this is where the injuries get exposed or ping. Long runs are a mere 2-3hours, and recovery 30mins to 1 hour. Plus 3 time plus in the gym. And that as amateur 12-15 hours a week on heavy 100 mile weeks. Though many runners now use cycling to supplement long recovery runs, app 2-3 hours, worked for me as a former cyclist, plus I could get sweet revenge on my faster younger team mates....on a fixed, oh the joy of 40 years of 'wiring' can't beat it....

18:25 - ''you can't help but wonder if NTT are going to be hoping that he has some of that _magic stuff_ up his sleeve still to try and turn the team around'' - that is a very diplomatic way of putting it. They're probably hoping Mr 60 has lots of ''magic stuff'' up his sleeve.

Naturally the number of cyclists above 60 years grows, as with the growing popularity of e-bikes makes cycling again accessible for them. The same reason why the number of accidents is growing too. Just think about it. Lower reaction times combined with high speeds and people who underestimate the risk.

Most people would avoid it thinking it only has two types of music (Country & Western) but they’d be wrong. Running places stress on the body that cycling and rowing don't. When you run you have to lift your entire body weight off the ground with each stride. More destructively, from the body's viewpoint, that body weight has to crash to the ground with each stride. This is what limits the amount of running an individual can do. However, most top middle and long distance runners will do two running sessions every day, often supplemented by a session in the gym; three sessions a day for some days..

Agreed about rowing. I use it as my cross training and can attest to its intensity. Although, I’ll pass on the bulk and weight of top-notched rowers (of which I’ll never remotely be)! They consider “lightweight” to be under 165lbs! Ha! Speed skating is also worthy of mention in training intensity. Good lord, the on-ice and off-ice routines of great speed skaters will blow you away.
