I’m embarrassed to say I never knew how to break down and clean this part. I’ve been carrying a Glocks for 16 years. Even in my CCW class years ago during maintenance they never mentioned it. Well they are all clean now. Thank you Hikock45!!!

I'm the 2nd owner of my Glock 21C and after watching this i disassembled my slide and was absolutely amazing at the crap that had built up in there. I'm very glad I have it all cleaned up now.

I put a minute amount on the rails and barrel. Occasionally, I go by what the experts say and put a very small amount there at the trigger sear, but not often. What works for me, though, might not work for everybody. All my guns are Ballistol guns, and it tends to almost "treat" the metal to where it needs less lubing.

I tihnk it would be really neat if you did an updated or new video on cleaning a glock 19 or any glock that way we would see it better with better quality video and just to see if and how youve changed or not changed your cleaning over the last 6 years. I also would like to see an updated video on cleaning, but with a dirty gun. I clean my gun after pretty much every practice (about 20 rounds) and I want to compare how much leading I get to Hickok's. I use his cleaning techniques but I get a lot of carbon on the slide channels. Any help Hickok?

you clean it after 20 rounds? as in after 20 rounds fired? a little piece of advice, don't waste that much time keeping it clean. let it go 500 or so between cleanings, it won't hurt it.

Hickok45: Thank you for both of the Glock cleaning videos.I recently purchased a 1st gen Glock 19 from a local gunsmith. I made the error of drenching the whole weapon with RemOil. The poor thing's trigger just wouldn't reset. 10 of 15 magazine loads had at least one failure. The gunsmith cleaned/removed all the harm (oil) I inflicted and now she's works flawlessly. He's a great guy too. I've watched/enjoyed many of your videos and wish I would have watched these 2 before doing what I did.

We have a couple of shops in the Nashville area that carry it, but a lot of gun shops don't. I'd just go to the Ballistoldotcom site and order some. You can also read about it there and find out whether it's for you or not. I love it, but it's different from other lubes and cleaners. I DON'T use it because it's so non-toxic and "environmentally friendly" ; I use it because I like it.

Depends on how many times I've shot it recently and broken it down. I might shoot the gun five times a week, but just a couple of magazines each time. No need to even oil the rails every time, in my opinion. Well, I say opinion, but my 20+ years of shooting Glock have taught me this.

Hickok45 you're not alone. I've put my G19 together twice without the recoil spring in a couple of brain-fart moments years ago. You have to remove the back plate and take the striker out to get the slide off. Of course I didn't know how to properly remove the back plate yet so it was a bit nerve racking. It was way before youtube was born. I have a renewed sense of amazement at how simple and brilliant Mr. Glock's design is after fully disassembling the slide.

Just keep an eye on it; I don't get that much crud in the frame. I wipe off the carbon deposits, but I don't break it down very often at all.

Probably not that often. I might be a bit like changing the oil in a car; one person might shoot 800 rounds a year, but the gun is exposed to dust and lint a great deal, or they might have fired some really dirty or corrosive ammo. Maybe they got some oil in the rear part of the slide. That person would do well to take it apart and clean it, despite the limited firing. Personally, I like to do it a couple times a year unless I think I might have gotten some oil in the striker channel.

My very first Glock was a used 26 which had the firing pin channel gunked up (yes a technical term) to the point where it would get failures to fire. My buddy is a Glock guy so I learned early how important that channel is to proper functioning. Great and informative video.

About 1300 rounds through mine, I got 2-3 "dud" rounds. But I suspected that it wasn't bad ammo, just lighter-than-normal strikes. So I was referred to this video, and sure enough - got oil in the upper and it was "muddy", for lack of a better term. Got it cleaned - thanks to you - and I'm all squared away now. Back to that legendary GLOCK reliability. without a spring, just dry fire, then push the slide forward while holding the take-down latch. I've done it a few times on accident.

i just did this to my g37 and it was pretty clean...still cleaned all the parts, polished them all to a shine...a tiny tiny bit of oil and put it back togather...this is by far the easiest gun to work on, this video helped me to get the guts to try it...its so easy and you explained it very good..love your vids!

Great video. Thanks for the demonstration. I took the slide apart and cleaned out all the gunk. Couldn't believe how much was in there. I then promptly did what you were talking about. I put the slide back together and put it on the frame with the barrel and recoil spring sitting right next to me. So I can attest through personal experience that detail stripping it again will allow you to slide it right off.

I had a bunch of gunk built up in my firing pin safety. I was apprehensive about doing this, but it was easy and it was even easier to put back together. I blasted everything with Ballistol, wiped it all down, dried it all, and reassembled in about 20 seconds.

Great videos, love your channel! At 14:30 you told how you mistakenly put the slide back on your Glock without the barrel or spring & then couldn't remove it. The same thing happened to me while I was distracted while talking on the phone, I inadvertently put the slide back on my G23 w/out the barrel or spring. I couldn't get the slide off to save my life. I went searching for a solution over the next several days & finally found it. Here is the simple fix; using the thumb on your trigger hand or your non-dominant hand, move / push the slide back into battery and then pull the trigger. The slide will come right off the front of the gun. Be careful, if the gun is tilted forward after you pull the trigger it will slide right off before you can grab it & possibly get damaged or damage something else when it hits the deck.

Hey hickok45, just so you know i have a tip for taking off the slide without the barrel and spring, if you just push the slide forward to its normal position and press the trigger it comes right off. I did my Smith and Wesson Sigma based off of this and did it for the first time after about 3 years and over 4thousand rounds. It was dirty and full of greasy carbon build up and metal burr. Thanks for the video Hickok45. Im sure it will run more reliably now that the firing pin and extractor are clean and clear.

What you mentioned at the end of the video actually happened to me last week. I oiled the gun a little and wanted to see how well, smooth, the slide would move. So without thinking I put the slide back on without the barrel and spring in place, and sure enough it would not come off. But after about 15 seconds of panicking I quickly realized that if you move the slide forward gently while holding the trigger and depressing it slightly, once it is in the right position the trigger will pull and release the slide. Hope this helps someone in the future.

I've put the slide on without the spring...but now I no longer feel all that stupid about it. Great video. My 26 came with an exceptional amount of oil around the striker. Cleaned it as per this video, and it sounds much louder when dry fired. I think it's traveling further/better.

I have a Glock 22 Gen 2, law enforcement trade in. I field striped it and cleaned it, took it to the range and it worked flawlessly. The trigger still felt a little gritty and heavy (about 7lb pull). I did a trigger job and brought it down to 4.5 to 5 lbs, but it still felt gritty. Sure enough, it was the slide assembly. When I took it apart, I found that it was totally gunked up in the striker channel and the pin spring. When I cleaned it I even found little pieces of metal. I am assuming it was pieces of brass. Anyway, definitely don't neglect the slide assembly!

Great Video, first time i've ever taken the slide apart and man was it dirty. The user manual doesn't list cleaning for this, so its much appreciated. Little tip, thompson makes a small set of brushes for cleaning the breach and nipple of a muzzleloader, works great for this.

Yes, it does. Duh, can you believe I had a can right there within arm's reach and didn't mention it. I guess if you want intelligence, you just have to go somewhere else! :-) Yep, I highly recommend using a can of compressed air. Mattpkp is right; it's great for working on the slide channels especially.

This was a perfect video for a first timer. My Glock 23 Gen 4 only had 100 rds through it. While not dirty yet, there were metal particles around the striker pin and I feel better they have been removed. Also, note the Gen 4 has a plastic sleeve around the striker assembly. Appreciate the helpful video.

Hickok thanks for the tip on how to release the slide. I was replacing the sights with an XS Big Dot set this past Saturday,and put the slide on without the barrel and mainspring. I was always very careful cleaning the slide, afraid I would get dirt and oil in the striker channel, with all that out you can really scrub the slide as long as you dry and get the crud out of the channel.

This video saved my sanity!! I purchased my first Glock mid July (Gen4 23). My take-up on my trigger seemed pretty coarse almost grinding from day one. 1400 rounds later no change. Turns out there was debris in the pin safety plunger not to mention 1400 rounds worth of junk. I was using clp and letting it get behind the extractor... No now I'm using a detergent type cleaner and keeping it away from the extractor/safety plunger/p

I left out the recoil spring once with my G26 but was too embarassed to take to a gunsmith. Just kept playing with it shaking it and trying to take it apart. I think about 2 days later I finally got it apart while holding it upside down. Caught myself the next time as I started to put the slide back on and noticed the barrel and spring still sitting there. Glad you shared your method.

i was watching this video, again. i did what you were talking about, putting the slide on without the barrel and the spring, prior to you talking about it. i pulled back on the slide, held the trigger down, and pulled on those 2 springs on the sides, and the slide slid right off.

If you put the slide on w/o the barrel and spring in place, I've pushed the slide forward until its almost aligned as if the barrel and spring are in there and then pull the trigger, it then, will go immediately forward just like when breaking it down after pulling lock down and letting it go forward. I hope you can understand that, it will come off easily without taking the back of the slide off. I dont know if anyone else has answered this in the comments. It just has to do with getting the trigger pulled and then it will unlock from the lower. Nothing has to be forced to do this either. A little pressure on the slide pushing it forward, easy-like, then pull trigger and it will spring forward some. Just dont treat it like an 800lb gorilla, and all should work out. I found out the hard way myself and just messed with it easily until it released. I just refused to believe that it wouldnt come apart without the barrel and spring installed. Thanks Hickok, for the video on taking it apart, I didnt know how to do it. Actually, I figured the other part out on the P10C, but it works on the Glock too. Thanks again.

when the slide is locked on without barrel and recoil spring just apply forward pressure on the slide and pull the trigger.

Mr Hickok, if you put the slide on without the barrel in it again, manually push the slide forward to how it normally rests fully assembled. You will notice some tension. Once you are holding it in its natural resting position you can pull the trigger and it will release the slide and it'll come right off.

@hickok45 Just got my first can of Ballistol for my G20C and my Mosin-Nagant. I've only shot about 80 rounds through my G20 and cleaned it twice since then ( I simply like to take guns apart and clean them, just because) using Hoppe's #9 and their oil. Thought it was clean. When I got the Ballistol 2 days ago, I sprayed the barrel inside and out, let it sit for 20 minutes, wire brushed it inside only 6 swipes, then ran the rag through it. BLACK! It's clean now! Ballistol only from now on!!

Thanks for this video! I disassembled the slide to my Glock 23 to clean it, I had bought it used. The previous owner must have cared for it because the firing pin and extractor channel wasn't that dirty and I had already fired about 100 rounds through it. I won't put oil or lube on the firing pin area of my guns again.

Pro Tip: With how it is shown to remove the back plate and striker, it will allow you to remove the slide without pulling the trigger (if it's stuck or something). Simply lock the slide back, release the pressure, slide off the backplate, and remove striker. There is now nothing blocking the slide from going forward so you don't need to dry fire. So you technically can remove the slide without dry firing.

I actually did what you said at the end and forgot to put the spring and the barrel back in when I put it back together and luckily I didn’t have to take it anywhere. I just pulled the two tabs down and released it like I normally would after pulling the trigger and it worked. I may have lucked out on that one.

Same thing happened to my with my G20. With the slide on and seemingly stuck, you can take your Glock tool and insert it through the back of the slide back plate, stick it in about an inch and you can catch the trigger assembly and push it down. This does the same thing as pulling the trigger to release the stuck slide. Nice thing about Glocks, it's hard to hurt anything.

Thanks for the help! I have put a few thousand rounds though my glock yet never cleaned those parts. Good thing I finally decided to take the striker out because there was a bunch of crud in there!

Hugely interesting. I would think the first time you did this must have been kind of a gulp moment. This is very interesting and informative. I would think one of the hardest stages would be getting two parts in just in the right sequence. You must have good hand eye coordination to have figured this out the first time. I see the importance from your comments. I will remember this when the time comes.

I locked my glock 19 up putting a ghost rocket trigger bar in with out filing the extended metal piece for the over travel, hence rendering my trigger immovable. I thought I ruined the gun since I couldn't pull the trigger to take the slide off. LoL I used a tip from this video to get my butt out of that jam.. Thanks Hickok!
