The major side effect of gear 5 seems to be that it warps luffys personality when used: Whenever we see gear 5 in use (both on wano and egghead) luffy is in a constant state of laughter and joy, and seems more fixated on being a spectacle to those around him. On egghead, luffy is shown to be more focused on making the egghead residents smile than actually fighting lucci, which makes sense as nika was said to brings smiles to the faces of the people.

Honestly, I think Gear 5th's primary drawback, aside from the recoil, is the fact that it seems to force Luffy to be happy - joyous, even. The Joy Boy state does not seem capable of negative emotions, everything is funny, everything is amusing, nothing is sad or infuriating, which I don't think is particularly freeing or liberating. It might well be that Luffy may eventually develop another form that, rather than just being the power of inherited will, will be true to himself, everything he feels, everything that motivates him, everything he cherishes, and may end up being a combination of Gear 4th and 5th.

We haven't actually seen Gear 5th in a sad situation. He may still be able to take things seriously in his own "so I just gotta beat them up right?" kind of way. He's always had a surprisingly level-headed "oh well" attitude to things, and during the final clash with Kaido he was very much serious. I’ve never watched One Piece, but I think gear 2-4 is a result of him finding out ways to unlock the potential of his power, and gear 5 just straight up unlocks all of it. Kinda like gear 2-4 being video game skills that needs to be unlocked and trained to be better used, whereas gear 5 is the cheat sheet.

My theory on Luffy's fruit, given that the fruit was given the name Gum Gum fruit Luffy automatically started using it as a rubber hence the difficulty he endures using it. If we had known it was Hito Hito model Nika he could have used it directly. Best example would be Blackbeard who knows exactly the his own fruits ability due to research. So Luffy's fruit abilities are still a mystery to everyone but the rubberman is just the tip of the iceberg.

Actually it's stated that Luffy's fruit has a will of its own, it lied to Luffy until he gained his 5th which is actually his fruit awakening and by doing so. Luffy learned the true name of his fruit.

to put this simply, gear 2nd increases speed and attack power but Luffy gets exhausted if he uses it for long periods of time, gear 3rd, Luffy bites his thumb and inflates it to create a massive arm that packs a lot of damage but pre-timeskip, Luffy shrinks to the size of a child after using it, gear 4th, Bounce Man is a combination of gear 2nd and gear 3rd but instead of biting his thumb, he bites his arm and spreads air around his body, mainly the upper part for Bounceman, but his legs aren't able to stand up properly so he has to bounce like a fucking- I mean, a balloon, gear 4th, Tankman is like bounce man but thicc, Luffy has to eat / drink a lot of things in order to do this gear and this highly increases durability but you are no longer able to move, gear 4th, Snakeman is the best gear 4th ( in my opinion ) as this spreads air around evenly, making mobility highly increased for attacks and for Luffy himself, gear 5th, this gear is by far the BEST one as its able to do anything Luffy desires, this can be seen as Luffy turns the roof of Onigashima into rubber and pulling it up to deflect Kaido's attack. gear 2nd can be seen used against Blueno, gear 3rd can be seen used against Rob Lucci gear 4th BM can be seen used against Doxquisite Doflamingo gear 4th TM can be seen used against Charolette Cracker gear 4th SM can be seen used against Charolette Katakuri gear 5th can be seen used against Kaido.

It makes sense that Gear 5 didn't have a major drawback, because that is his actual power, the other gears having drawback because he is forcing his body to work extra hard, even for rubber human. And the fact that Luffy awakening power can also affect another living form is also kinda make sense you know, Mythical Zoan is combination of either Paramecia or Logia with Zoan transformation. Zoan always transform the user body, now combine it with Paramecia awakening maybe it can change even another living form body into whatever property that fruit has. However, my personal favorite was Gear 4 because wow, I never expected that kind of power up lol, its just mindblowing how Oda can came up with that.

I feel like Gear 4 is the pinnacle of luffy's abilities, but since gear 5th allows him to interact with everything it does make it obsolete. Just because gear 5th makes gear 4th bad isn't a bad thing, considering it takes a lot of stamina to use so once he uses it he needs to finish that fight and chill compared to 4th now after being used so many times it should be like how gear 2 is, a power up mid fight but won't drain him like a Zoan transforming into a hybrid of human and animal. Like how kaido only used his flaming dragon once when he knew it was this or lose that's how gear 5th should be.

Just like with Super Saiyan, the stronger forms tend to have an issue with stamina while the weaker forms will no longer have that issue. It would make sense to try and win a fight with a transformation that won't tire you out or end before the fight is over.

Correction in case it hasn’t been said by someone already. Whwn Luffy “punched through Kaido’s head”, it was Kaido’s head stretching back with Luffy’s arm, so what we saw was Kaido’s scalp. The colouring was also changed later on to Kaido’s hair in the official volume to avoid confusion.

I really like your theory of the drawback of gear 5th making it a very dangerous thing just like how the avatar state was the strongest move an avatar has yet the time they are most vulnerable. This was actually brought up in the manga by Lucci. He laughed when he saw the attack coming saying what you said and then got slammed through a building. Gear 5 shows his power is imagination, therefore since Luffy imagined that the air would cause more power meant it would happen. I'm sure there's a limit to this but the potential of Luffy is crazy rn.

With the reveal that Luffy's fruit is a mythical zoan, we need to rethink all of Luffy's abilities. Rubber can stretch. Rubber can bend. Rubber is malleable. Flexible. The power of imagination is also something flexible. With gear fifth, Luffy fights with only his imagination as a weapon. If Luffy thinks it, he can do it with gear fifth. Now, looking back on his abilities, a lot of stuff is really only half possible with a rubber body. Would Luffy really be able to control his blood flow? Would increased blood flow actually result in being faster and stronger? Blowing air into his body wouldn't actually make it hit harder. In fact I think it would be weaker, almost like punching someone with a balloon. It would just pop from the pressure. And then with gear fourth, mixing gear third with Haki is COMPLETELY in the realm of imagination. Luffy's abilities have always been a bit silly. They've also not always been entirely possible. Almost as if they work simply because Luffy thinks they would. Luffy has always been using his imagination to fight. He just placed a limit on himself because he imagined his own limits.

By the way, in a certain sense Luffy IS the Chosen One... but just because he ate the fruit for error! He became the "chosen one" when he did that... That's why Shanks saved him even though it costed him is arm: Shanks definetely knew that the Gum Gum was really the Nika fruit, and rather than losing it and having to challenge luck in order to find it once again he preferred leaving it to someone he knew was his friend, and most of all knew he knew his mind was settled on being a pirate. Roger, no way he doesn't and didn't know everything about this coming new age, Joy Boy, the One Piece, etc. Also, since the One Piece is obviously not some "gold and riches", but something more abstract, like the coming of an age of freedom, or any of the many theories (this one is just the most general) and the more the manga goes on, the more it is clear this treasure is tied to JoyBoy which is, someway, Luffy (because he set his destiny when he ate the fruit as a child)

No Luffy isn’t a chosen one he’s a men who follows his own destiny just like the PK and just like Nika. The freedom of fate and the decider of one’s future. Possible the DF did choose Luffy but it wasn’t out this the one prophecies but most likely it chose Luffy for the fact on how much joy he brought. If awakening comes when the body and mindset are sync with the DF then Luffy was at risk of never awakening from his depression over Ace if Jimbei didn’t save him. But if you still believe then instead of saying was already chosen instead he made himself the chosen one by finally doing the impossible of 800 years ago. He’s Luffy and even then Rayleigh told the crew that when they find the OP and learn the truth of the world it’s up to them to decide on how to interpret it.
