The most powerful items are small items (Stamina potions, earrings, rings, and utility belt). Two more small items is broken. Therefore, Cloak of Pockets is an easy S tier.

Considering you can only have 1 of each item it is unlikely one character will ever be able to obtain and use enough of the S tier items to warrant cloak of pockets being higher. For certain characters absolutely, but generally what character is going to have enough gold to have 1 of each earring, stamina potion, and a ring above the initial 5 small slots at level 9 to warrant an extra 2 slots? I tried to view it from the economic angle and there are simply better costed more reliable chest slots for most characters. It’s also a very “win more” item that does nothing on its own. Don’t get me wrong I love it and it’s broken, but I would struggle to recommend it seriously to most players.

@@MandatoryQuest I see that I suppose. It's not till late in your character's quest that you would have enough gold to buy lots of the best small items. And for a Front line character, it is arguably not as essential as armor. But for someone behind the line, it excels. I loved the cloak of pockets on my play-through of the Tinkerer - and we hadn't even unlocked the rings yet. It was very useful at lower levels to allow carrying more than just the essential stamina potions. Having access to not just stamina potions but also power potions and a moon earing (untap those boots and Eagle eye goggles when you need it most!), made a HUGE difference. And I don't think it too hard to get 7 small items you really want to carry, even if we assume you can't get all the rings, the utility belt, and earrings. Minor Stamina, Major Stamina, Scroll of Stamina, Star Earing, one of the rings, Major Power potion, and your choice of a healing, power, mana or potion or another earing. That is seven. And a lot of them are fairly cheap. You would always want to have another healing potion (to clear poison or extend life) or mana potion (to help a teammate when they need it) along, but you just run out of space. And multi-attacks LOVE an extra power potion. With Cloak of Pockets, there is space. I am playing the Cragheart as a tank now, and with all my multi-attacks, I am super bummed I don't have the space to carry power potions, since on the front line I need the armor. If I was not playing a tank, I would go right back to Cloak of pockets. It just gives you so much flexibility and options. Perhaps not S tier, but I think for that extra flexibility and firepower it is at least B tier or A tier

Yeah I like it a lot on support characters because you don’t want to fill up your stam pot slots with support items like scrolls and mana potions. I guess it gets to a point with 7 items though that 1 or 2 of them are probably surplus, but still can be useful when the situation arises and that gives a lot of flexibility. I was probably a bit harsh so yeah I can see it up a tier or 2 especially for Quartyls 😀

CoP is great in an endgame, infinite money situation where you've been been playing the same character for ages and you want to max it out. But in my experience I usually end up completing my retirement mission around level 6-7 and I've never had enough money to buy a chest item that does nothing by itself and two more powerful small items. Sure, you could fill the slots with some cheap items like minor hp pot and mana pot, but at that point you're not getting a whole lot of extra power out of the pockets. So I guess it just depends on your playstyle I guess. If you're holding off retirement because you like playing at level 9, I could totally see CoP being top tier. But for a more frequently-retiring player it's a very niche item IMO.

Doomed Compass is an S-Tier item. It solves so many problems, can delete enemies and trap walls at the same time, loves being refreshed with Three Spears. The versatility of being able to re-position any enemy on demand at an incredible Range 5. The text doesn't sound exciting if you're just reading it in the shop, but playing with it you'll always be able to find a use for it every single mission.

I think its effectiveness depends a lot on the scenario, and also players remembering to use it. Its certainly very good at times (and also free) but you can also use push and pull to similar results sometimes. Its a good role player item that unfortunately due to its high cost might not make it onto peoples 2nd or 3rd characters. Also almost every item is S-tier with the Three Spears really, so I tried to not let 1 character affect the list.

I'd definitely rate it higher than D at least. It outright deletes an enemy about every other scenario, often tricky ones too far into the room to get with a push, and disarms traps in the process. It keeps you from needing to bring a push card, which are often kind of sub-par low level cards you'd rather not have with you at higher levels, and being able to move at any angle at range 5 is way more convenient than even a good push atttack. And then it's a 'use on your turn' item, so you get to do all that without spending one of your actions for the turn, almost like a ring of brutality stuck on a single action that's just situational enough that you'd rather not bring a card for it but just generally-useful enough that you rarely regret having it. And if the scanrio doesn't have traps, you just bring something else. This item has often left me feeling very powerful, and I'd rate it an A, definitely not lower than a B.

Okay I watched it all. Element Blades: They dont exhaust, meaning that if you generate an element you can bring +2 damage out of nowhere for no cost. This in combination with the fact that these blades are used in certain builds I feel puts them up a couple of tiers. Summons: I simply think you under-estimate their usefulness. Cloak of pockets: This IMO is the biggest outlier in your list. all of your S tier items are small items. You could think of Cloak of pockets as a chest item that allows you to do 2 of the effects of small items. If you had a chest item that combined ring of brutality with second chance ring, i have no doubt you would give that an S tier. It looks like you are only taking the base game into account as well. When you start taking quest items into account such as the spears and the eclipse items, cloak only becomes better. Cloak will only get better with every expansion to come also. Placing it as low as you did seems insane to me. Balanced Blade: I think this is higher. Gives ranged characters another option. It is at the very least far better than versitile dagger. Steel ring: I dont see how you can rank the heal potions so differently from this? I get that heals can rid you of unwanted status, but steel ring can potentially allow you to play chicken with dying. In other words in a scenario where you may or may not die, steel ring allows you to take that risk. Doomed compass: this clears traps and damages enemies at the same time. Deserves to be higher. Everything else is pretty spot on though. I would rank some things lower, but I find it easier to say some items are under rated because of experience, likely you have had a better experience of say the poisoned dagger than I have so who am I to say you are wrong on that lol.

Elemental blades were the ones I mostly felt I did harsh on. It’s just that reliably using them is quite a commitment and often you want to use the elements with your card abilities, so really they end up being mostly used by only a few characters. I do think I could of stuck them higher. Yes I agree cloak of pockets could be higher, but the cost investment is quite high on it and the 2 additional items that make it broken, however if you have loads of money and all the end game items then it’s great. It just takes a while to get to that point. Dagger and versatile blade are fun and good on a few character but ultimately don’t play into the spirit of the game for the cost investment. They almost have anti synergy with how to play most classes I’ve found. Yeah personal experience totally plays a huge part in making a list like this, thanks for the in-depth comment dude it’s always fun talking GH 😁

Super agree about doomed compass. Bought it for my soothersinger and the ability to move an enemy to complete a triangle to CC-lock 3 enemies for a few turns was huge. Plus, sometimes a guy is next to 2 damage traps and they just die which is pretty big value for a small item.

Must have taken serious work to edit this down, but the result is awesome, quite fun and relatable for anyone who's puzzled over what to buy, equip, or sell off. Basically every ranking seems fair. Y'all have taken great care to note situational utility for otherwise meh items. Mild locked-class spoilers: Necklace of Teeth seemed to verge on S-tier for our Lightning Bolt, lol. As Sun I often induced an extra 6-9 Retaliate damage on ranged baddies with my looted Black Censer, FWIW. (I'm not about to argue with either item's ranking, though.) And at the moment my Angry Face particularly loves Ring of Haste for squeezing essential movement into a dooming turn; I'm fixing to get the Blinking Cape for the same reason.

Ranking items objectively was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and yeah the editing was really tough as I wanted to keep in at least something for every item. There are so many items that work really well with certain characters, party comps, or just good value when got for free, so you make a case for most items being useful at some point. Necklace of Teeth is an awesome pickup for Bolt especially if you run a blood pact build, and is probably the best in slot item for her so S tier is definitely warranted. Glad you liked the video!

I think the Drakescale armor and/or Protective Charm are amazing for tanks! Negating Wound and most importantly Poison, will save tons of damage. If a tank is taking multiple hits in a round, that adds up quick! Then they can be healed for actual health, rather than just removing Poison.

​@@MandatoryQuest I don't know what difficulty lvl you are playing on. I m always playing max lvl (7), with a full team of 4. At this level, almost all monster have a poison or wound by default. With the number of monsters we have in a 4-player game, this armor easily negates 20+ damage per game on our tank. So, on a Sunkeeper, this item is really godtier. With fewest people and a lower difficulty, the answer might differ though.

100th comment - also yeah Cloak of pockets = 2 small items. 2 small items is pretty darn good. I should use it more. I actually have it with my Doomstalker. Volatile bomb, stun powder, doompowder, major healing, 2 scrolls forgot which, doomed compass. Pretty fricking awesome

It is a good item at high prosperity and on a character who doesn't need any other chest slot item. I think its just a bit situational due to it needing you to have lots of other items unlocked. Solo items are coming out soon in digital as a DLC so that will add some more interesting ones into the pool, and the Doomstalker new cloak looks great.

I am commenting before finishing. Taking cost into account, smoke elixir exists, i dont know how you could possibly say that cloak of invisibility is better than cloak of pockets. Cloak is S tier IMO

Smoke Elixir is a solo item so they were discounted from this list as you have to own or be able to play those scenarios. Solo items might have to be a tier list of their own one day!

My group is still pretty early game and in the group I play the tinkerer. The cloak and medallion are essential to my ability to keep the others playing longer. Heal potion for me, Mana potion for those on my team who need it, stamina potion to return a card (which card depends on the situation), and stun card just in case its needed. The return up to two discarded card to a team member in combination with the stamina potion and the medallion. Or the pull in combination with the stamina and the medallion are game savers.

Doom Compass. So good. Move enemy into an AOE...into a trap...if enemy is immobilized but in range for their attack, move them away. You get the idea.

You can't move an immobilised enemy unfortunately. Still a good item and it helps a lot that you get it for free too, which I didn't take into account in the tier list.

Summon small items are great on scoundrel too for the easy adjacent ally. Doomed compass is an item in the campaign you can get for free, and I would never turn down free. It's just if it was sitting in the shop would you buy it? and I think most would rather save for an enhancement or something else I think, and I tried to base my list from this perspective.

With all the items there's always a couple of characters or situations that make them good. Skeleton ring is also sweet on the scoundrel too for a surprise flanking bonus.

Do you think adding a "set bonus" for equipping multiple of the Drakescale items would be enough to make them playable?(e.g. an aura that gives +1 shield to adjacent allies)

A set bonus would definitely help and would make it more thematic/attractive to collect it all. The set in general is probably most useful to a melee character, so perhaps a personal +1 permanent shield, or even something cool like immunity to retaliate would be sweet. It would have to be something not overly broken, but also worth having so comparable to the other items your giving up.

Cool list, I agree in general for most but really don’t get the love for Iron Helmet, even for tanks, when you talk about other items being situational. There is only one 2x modifier out of 20 possible modifier cards, which also get shuffled anytime the null gets flipped (and also the 2x modifier could get flipped on a different character). Maybe someone has done the math but I’m guessing the love for Iron Helmet is more of a case of confirmation bias (when it does come into play that one or two times to negate 5+ damage it’s WOW) but you don’t think about all the times it either doesn’t get used or negates 1 or 2 damage per scenario. I would put it maybe C tier early on because it’s cheap.

When your playing a dedicated tank at say 3 or 4 player the number of attack modifiers drawn by enemies can be crazy. With effects like strengthen and muddle too, it’s not uncommon for the enemies to loop their decks fairly regularly. If you position yourself well you should be taking all or most of those hits. Iron helm can easily save you 1 or 2 x2 hits per scenario which at higher difficulty is essentially saving you from burning 1 or 2 cards to damage. Sure it might not always be useful, but the safety net and prevention it provides is much better than any other tanking helmet option. It also scales better than any other tanking item as your party level goes up the enemies attacks go up so the damage mitigation of a 2x is more valuable. It also counters enemies that bless which can hit like a truck, so it’s not just limited to 1 card in some scenarios. For 10 gold it’s an absolute no brainier in my opinion and even at 20 or 30 gold I think I would still go for it on my dedicated tank builds.

@@MandatoryQuest interesting opinion, I’ve rarely seen it take more than 1 hit per scenario even with a tank, and even then the amount of times where it prevented burning a card are memorable but few. Other than with Sun I’m still not sure it’s doing as much as many of the other head slot options.

Cloak of Invisibility in S tier does not surprise me as I have seen it in many of your build guides. With only a limited number of copies of most items could you go over the high tier items some time and say what characters should have priority for those most valuable items.

Any character with a repeatable non burn stun or disarm effect should have priority on card recovery items. AoE combo melee characters should have priority on rocket boots. Rings are wanted by most but best used by combo classes but a special nod to two minis really loving them. Invisibility is priority for glass cannon style classes that need to move up aggressively. Ultimately you can go whichever way you like though if it makes sense with your party.

I haven't played Forgotten Circles yet. Unfortunately when the big C hit the world it put a stop to my in person plans to play it. I've read the item and yes it would negate pendant curse.

I disagree with some of the items you placed in lower tier. -The initiative boot can be really useful to counter enemy with low initiative. You don't use it often, but when you use it can change the outcome of the game. As an example if an enemy with low initiative would disarm you before you could kill it. Also, it is excellent for the beast tyrant bear build as he's not moving very much and doesn't need the other boot. Finally having the ability to change initiative is great to coordinate with teammate, sometimes when you only have 2 cards left and you need to play after your teammate, and it would be impossible to do it without the initiative boot. -The 4 shield is excellent with the quartermaster for tanking as he can refresh an item every turn at lvl 5. Which mean a free heal of 4 every turn. When playing at the highest difficulty, you usually get hit by 4 or more every turn. For me, this item is S tier for Quartermaster after lvl 5. -Finally I think the 1 shield boot should have been rated higher. Just a good overall effect in the long term, specially good for tanking character. Great list overall!

I tried to see all items in the sense that would any character want them and ultimately although initiative boots can be amazing on certain characters, and so can the ring, just the fact that not every character wants them pushes them down the list. There’s always exceptions and situations where every item can shine and sometimes it even just depends on personal play experience which made this list really hard to make. So, great video sort of. Many of the items you do not name and for us non-gloomhaven experts ... we don't know the cards by sight and the image you so kindly linked has part of it blocked in top right corner and is to blurt to make out anything but a veg picture of what is on the card. Maybe a list included in the description that people could tfen copy and paste to save for themselves would have been a nice touch for all us non-experts.

Yeah it’s not perfect this was a spur of the moment live stream idea that I could of executed better. The website cut off the image tops and bottoms which was annoying and no amount of formatting could stop that, so in future I’m going to have to create something specially for these sized cards. Also the export of the final list was from that same website so same problem with the final list. The original stream was 3 hours long so for brevity on this video I had to cut quite a lot. I think the original VOD is now down on Twitch so what I might do is upload the full original stream where we discuss every item in some detail with names and link it here but make the video unlisted. When someone's attacked with chainmail, are they forced to use it to reduce damage or can they choose to use the charge or not?

You must use a charge if you would take damage. If the enemy drew a miss or if you had enough shield already to negate the damage you don’t need to use a charge. Hope this helps :)

I don't understand why you put +4 movement boots on a lower tier than +2... is it a cost effective thing? Personally all my mercs all have+4 boots, never leave home without them :) Unless I get lucky and find the rocket boots, in which case OOOH boy yes please

Yes that was all done purely on costs. Once you have +2 you mostly have all you need and only a few characters will want to upgrade (unless you have loads of money of course!) They are obviously better but +2 movement for just 20G is just tooo good.

Summoners robe and staff is actually B/A tier for that character I’d say. If you can’t get those then you can use your item slots to help support others so wands/elemental robes, or get cloak of pockets and go crazy with stamina potions, rings, and ear rings.

I think my greatest disagreement would be putting all the elemental blades in the same tier and all the wands in the same tier. They are not all created equal. Night or Tremor Blade are almost useless, no class would use them, so D tier is fair. Inferno Blade, however, is easily A tier on Lightning Bolt. Frigid Blade is A or B tier on a Mindthief since they produce more Ice than they use. Similarly, Wand of Darkness is easily A tier because Eclipse needs it whereas Wand of Tremors is C tier at best, since Cragheart doesn't need it and it's only ever useful on a Triangles who has no better wand available.

I think COG is C tier its really good in partys that dont have anyway to remove traps. So its really good or really bad so c tier. Edit change it to D tier for the price.

I’m trying to get better at turning live content into a recorded video, and having that more in mind when we do these kinds of streams. It really didn’t help the tier list website cut off part of the cards too. My level 9 card tier list I think came out better as I learnt from some mistakes in this one. Thanks again.

I would disagree with doom compass just because forced movement is crazy strong and some characters really need to have good enemies layout, its easy a for me, but i could see it being a b

It’s also a free item which makes it probably rate a fair bit higher too. I tried to keep it more from a cost to action perspective though, and for me I’ve never really found it to be an item I have to have. It is very useful for parties who don’t have any push/pull on their own too!

Items should be evaluated WITHOUT taking their cost into account at all points, especially if you already make an abstraction of how hard they are to acquire. For example it makes no sense to value +3 boots under +2 boots as they are objectively simply better and will from time to time allow you to make a play you otherwise could not. Whether that is worth the money is irrelevant since you don't apply gold value to many, many other items.

Sorry about that but I had to cut it down as it was crazy long. In retrospect I probably cut it too much, but I tried to keep the pace up on the items that were not as interesting.

Stamina Potion is the only bad thing in the game in my opinion. It removes the excitement of not having all your card available at all times. We house ruled that each character could have at most one stamina potion.

Good house rule for sure as they skew player choices too much. I'm excited to how the changes to them made in Frosthaven effect playability.

what you described as excitement is actually an annoyance. and a hassle. So stamina potions are a great thing. Developers of the game know better of whenever limiting it or not.

Consuming an element that enemies are going to use is really good to have as a backup. Equip it against certain enemies to stop them from going invisible (you get to chose load out after you know the enemies in a scenario). So they are trash until they are S-Tier. Making them at least a D-Tier.

I have never really needed to have situational items waiting to be equipped under certain circumstances. I would rather sell and use the money on enhancements or some other main gear upgrade. The problem with every item on this list is that there is always a situation where it would be good, and I cant make every "bad" item a D tier just because of that. I had to draw the line somewhere, but your not wrong it has its uses.
