This guy is the Bee's Knees. 40 years ago there was none of this advice available. All we had was a few books, records to listen to and hang around in the local Drum Store exchanging ideas. The bar has gone up - thank goodness.

Horacio Hernandez, a.k.a. (by Michel Camilo as "The Octopus") MUST BE ON ANY LIST of polyrhythm masters!! Also a.k.a. "El Negro," Horacio was arguably the FIRST to play the clave with left foot PERFECTLY while simultaneously playing ANYTHING else on top!! LOVE your channel, BEAT DOWN!! Have for YEARS!! Got stoked to hear you mention open handed playing! When I got my first full kit I naturally started playing both crossed and open handed. Just depending on what felt the most comfortable in whatever it was that I was trying to do. So to hear you talk about it honestly made my day

Other Drum nerd phrases that are well worth explaining are "playing behind the beat" or "Playing ahead of the beat", and of course "playing in the pocket" it took me years before I really understood what was meant by these phrases. Great video Rob, the names of drummers who exemplify each of the concepts and techniques are most helpful. Sometimes it is easy to allow listening tastes to stick to our well known favorites. It is always nice to branch out and listen to drummers that I don't hear as often.

So this is pretty embarrassing but I have been playing drums since 15. Im 26 now. I taught myself by ear to "play" same with vocals and keyboard. I don't "know" anything term and book wise. But I just play instinctively by ear. I have no idea what im even playing. I just know what I wanna put out there and play. Im currently in a band as a female drummer and singer. But I feel bad about myself all the time because I never know what the terms are or what other actual lesson trained musicians are doing. From tuning to terms like the handful in this video. I know that's a problem and it's probably lame of me. But I had kids at a very young age. Their almost 10 and 6 now. So I stopped playing all music when I became a mother and I never got the chance to learn the terms and all that. The past 3 years I was able to get back into music since my kids are older now. Last year I got a drum set and joined the band im in currently. What do I do? I am so sorry if I'm being annoying but I really love singing and drumming and I wanna take it as far as I can and support my family doing what I love one day with it. I know its a lot of blood sweat and tears on the pathway to being a musician but Its worth it and I'm open to whatever. But since I am a mother of 2 and work full time, I have very little time to physically practice and focus on improving myself musically. Please help. Thank you for your videos your a kick ass person! I look up to you as a drummer and it inspires me to want to keep going. But it is very discouraging since I am so, I guess "rusty" with all the time I didn't do music. Sorry to go on with my story but it eats at me every day I wake up. I dont like my job. Im an underpaid and overworking mom who just wants to do what she loves. Any advice would be appreciated 🙏🏾
