And the track is a straight line (most likely a 1/4 mile), and then to decelerate, they deploy parachutes. Though, I will say two things. First, this is probably where street (drag) racing started, then people wanted to not have to go to a track (plus use specific cars). And second, most of my memory/knowledge comes from one specific episode of The Simpsons. So I may be way off base (I could have done a search first, too, but hey, here we are). Extra info, the episode in question had Mr. Burns having a company event, where he was watching the race, and didn't like the speed they were going at, so Smithers had the racers slow down, but that was boring, so he had them speed up. I recall the parachutes deploying ad just sort of flopping out, and dragging on the ground (which, of course, MUST be why it is called DRAG racing (sarcasm)). Then again, this is 15+ year old info, so I may just be mashing different info together.
