Grand Central kept the seat shells on their Class 180 when they refurbished them and didn’t even replace the cushions and coverings in standard class for years after acquiring the sets, what made you think they’d replace the seats on the Mark 4s! 😂

I did try First Class on Cross Country once, I have also travelled First Class lots of times on Avanti West Coast and Great Western Railway, also back when it was Virgin Trains and First Great Western.

I have ridden First Class in a MK4s several times but not under TfW. You are right, they are huge inside and I am over six feet tall. The porridge looked great! Always start my day with a huge bowl of the stuff , made from rolled oats and not the instant stodge most people eat. Hiya my lovely, Devon Mike here, just wanted to ask you, if you've ever ridden on the "Robin Hood Line" yet by any chance? It's a nice industrial/countryside Railway journey and goes from: Nottingham to Worksop every hour. If you get a chance to look at Worksop Railway Station it's very nice, has an old signal box which is now preserved at the end of the platform and the station is painted to look like the old Great Central livery. And the service is operated by EMT and usually have class 170 Turbo Star units with the occasional class 158. Anyway unless you've already done it recently? If not have a look into it, you may like the journey? Anyway all the best for the new year keep up the good work and hope to see some more of your enjoyable videos soon.

Wow! That's amazing! I used to travel between Stockport and Shrewsbury back in about 1990, and it was a two carriage 156 Super Sprinter. Two carriages was never enough, and sometimes people couldn't even get on the train. That is such an upgrade.

They are nice trains when they run, but they seem to spend more time in the carriage sidings at Crewe, being either repaired or maintained ,than they do in service. Love the end shot …hair blowin in the wind and…oohh …those railings. 😜. 🚂🚴‍♂️👣🇺🇦

Got to sit 1st class in one a couple months back as the conductor wasn't feeling well and she said I could take a seat as she wasn't going to come round so I did and it was honestly the best. Seats are so comfy you've got enough space and its quiet. I was only riding from Cardiff Central-Cwmbran which is only 2 stops but it was brilliant. Unfortunately the service was cancelled at Hereford as she was taken into hospital(I caught up with her a couple weeks later on her first day back and we started to chat and she's actually quite a nice lady)

Great vid, exactly what I was looking for - travelling Newport to Manchester in a few days and had no recollection of 1st class with Arriva Trains Wales. Looks like a good setup with TfW and in this case hardly any more expensive than standard class either.

Looks like a solid experience, you did very well on the price! I want to ride with Transport for Wales all the way from Holyhead to Cardiff in 1st class at some point. Doing this with a 1st class all line rover later this year. Good to get an idea of what 1st class is like on TFW. They get a little better each time I use them, seem to be one of the better companies now.

I've always wondered about them trains, use to frequent Shrewsbury when I was going to Aberyswyth Uni, but I was always on a packed Class 197. I hope this train give the much needed capacity upgrade between Cardiff and Manchester. That said, this does remind me I need to book some time off and go back to Cyrmu, I miss it so much.

The River Severn looks really high! I've got a caravan down that way, right next to the river. When I first had it, the site only flooded once every 5 years or so (the caravans are up on stilts). Now it's flooding every year 😬

For the price of that ticket, it really was a no-brainer to go posh when you had the opportunity. Check before you go to the NRM as I'm pretty sure it is closed long term for refurbishment throughout 2024. However, it may be that part of it is open to the public.

I did a Cross Country service from Bournemouth to Southampton in First Class recently and I was quite happy with the snack service and nicer seat. It was quite a good deal for only £8.40p one-way for a 50 minute journey.

It is called "transport for wales" after all. :p Trust my silly judgement **shakes head** :p Ahh well.... no worries at all. :) I'm a little bit curious if you might use tfw to travel to Wales at some time in the new year though, would be nice to see, if you might. I used to travel between Manchester and Shrewsbury regularly when I was a teenager in the early 80s, and those trains look so much plusher! What I got was old even then, and a little worse for wear, though pretty comfortable.

There was from memory back in the early 80s some loco hauled services on this route. Class 33 and 37 would of both featured on these trains, durring the mid 80s class 33s actually ran to Manchester Piccadilly .

You might as well do TfW Class 231 FLIRT and Class 756 Tri-mode FLIRT since TfW have ordered these new trains from Stadler. As well the Class 398 City-link tram-trains which they are to enter service sometime in 2024.

Glad you had a good experience on TFW. I noticed the carriages were quite old and pulled by a DB train. A leftover from the previous franchise.. First Class is very rare and normally only reserved for the routes the N Wales AMs take to the Senedd. Normally for example what I deem 'the train from Hell' i.e. Milford Haven to Manc Picc. is a 2 carriage affair with little food and a toilet which is nearly always broken by the time you get to the end of the line. IF you are lucky enough not to be offloaded at Crewe as the train is so late. With the exception of the electrified Cardiff Valley lines, I find TFW an absolute joke for the rest of Wales.
