If you use cabs without the tray can you dip into the 5 minute epoxy to seal the backs? Beautiful work
@13Art
@13Art 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Norma! The epoxy I've used is like a paste so I think dipping would make it quite a rough surface (and for the side that sits against the skin, you want something as smooth as possible so it doesn't irriate the skin). These days, I use uv resin - under a lamp it is cured in 10 mins or so :)

Thank you! ^_^ Yes I've tried it but I found that if you accidentally get one of the parts on the other nozzle, it activates and then seals the tube over :( I have tried this once and only once and managed to seal the rest of the glue in and it was wasted! Of course, if you're not as clumsy as me, it may work much better :D

Do you not have to press down hard either cabochon to the skin or to the bezel? I have been getting silver spots done weeks later I notice it. But I do use Diamond glaze on both. What about Goop?
@13Art
@13Art 2 жыл бұрын
Hi again Rhonda! I don't press hard when gluing. I've tested both ways and found that it doesn't change anything for me. At best, pressing down hard forces more glue out of the contact area which can make it hard to clean off when dry, and also it can compromise the bonding effectiveness between the two surfaces. In my experience, using Diamond Glaze for both gluing processes is far more likely to cause silver spots. I haven't tried 'Goop' - is it a glue?

Hi Staci! I get mine from AliExpress but the quality is very hit-and-miss. I've gotten cracked, broken and scratched cabs. I tend to vary my orders and then once I find a good seller I re-order from them :) Alternatively, if you have somewhere local that you can purchase them, you can view them for yourself and see the quality.

Hi Rhonda! I leave my dips at least 24 hours before I glue them into trays. However, it's important to take note of your season and climate. I live in a warm, humid climate - dry climates or cold climates may change the drying time :)

Hi! Thank you so much for this video and confirming what I just came to question about diamond glaze being waterbase - those damn silver streaks have caused me so much heartache with pieces I loved! I know you posted this video a while ago but if you happen to see this question... You mentioned in a comment that you do seal the back of tray less cabochons. What do you then do to attach the piece to say, a chain? I tried using glue-on bails but this was a real problem with cabs I dipped. With dipped cabs, it's only acrylic that adheres to the glass itself - unlike when using skins there is a glue layer holding the acrylic to the glass. But with ones I dipped, I've sealed the backs with varnish twice and the glued the bail to the back. But I found after the bail dried, the bail had adhered to the varnish,.the varnish to the paint, but a simple tug on the bail pulls the whole thing away from the glass because far as I can guess, there isn't anything really adhearing the paint to the glasd cab. So... what do YOU do with dipped cabs? Do you use any of them tray less? Or have any suggestions? My goodness,my apologies this is so long!! Didn't realize iit in trying to explain myself. But if this makes sense to you and you have any suggedtions, I'd be grateful!! Thank you!! (PS - joined that FB group. Just put in my request to join! 😁)

Hi Cheri! Thanks for your comments :) I've had dipped trayless pendants I've worn on and off for about 5 years with no problems. Like anything, I suppose there can be a number of factors that affect a glue's bond to the materials. Nowadays (I really need to make a new video!) I glue the bail onto the dipped back and then seal the remainder with UV resin. I make sure to make the resin meet the edges of the bail - this will help improve the bonding of it all together as one piece. Alternatively, you could UV resin the entire back and then glue the bail onto that. I prefer the previous method, however, because the bail sits flush with the back of the pendant :) I hope this helps! Welcome to the group - I'm sure I would have approved your join request by now!

Oh by the way - the water-based glue, I've found, is one of the main reasons for the silver spots but not the only reason :/ So they may not all be gone just by making this switch, but I managed to improve on most pieces by switching glues :)

Is the diamond glaze glue better than E6000?
@13Art
@13Art 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sue, I avoid E6000 due to the carcinogenic warnings on it. Nowadays I use a different water-based glue, Helmar's Gemstone Glue, which goes on white (dried clear) which makes it easier to see the bubbles that need to be worked out while it's wet :)

Thanks for your question, Rhonda! I put a thin layer of epoxy and then press it down a few times during the 5-minute setting time. Hope you will see this comment on an older post. I'm having real problems with using Diamond Glaze to glue in my cabachons. I get the comparison you made with wrinkly bath fingers 😉. Well, I have started putting clear nail varnish over the back of my acrylic dips (once dried for a week - just to make sure), then I waited a few more days before gluing them in their trays. Seeing that the Diamond Glaze glue only touches the nail varnish, why would I still be getting silver spots? I'm so confused. And it's not on all of them... 🙄
@13Art
@13Art 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! It's important to note that the glue is only one of the reasons for silver spots. It could also be from thin paint skins, air bubbles in the glue, shrinking glue when it dries (some glues contract as they dry) and probably many other reasons! Unfortunately, it's tricky and seems to vary for different people - one person may not get them with a certain technique and another person may get them from the same technique! There can be so many factors. If you aren't already, feel free to join our Facebook group Acrylic Pour Jewelry to learn, troubleshoot and share your work! facebook.com/groups/404597383385327

Hi Lily, the glue I use to glue the cabochon to the skin was Diamond Glaze (nowadays I use Helmar's Gemstone Glue) and the glue to glue the cab/skin to the tray/bezel is any brand of 2-part epoxy glue. No, the dried glue on the lid is set and can't be re-used. I try to mix a small amount and use it all up in one go to reduce wastage.

Yes it will make the resin pool as it repels it. Same with water-based glosses - it can even make them peel off! The silicone isn't needed after the paint has dried as its effect is used when the paint is wet.
