Hi Glyn, I think your issue is that you are perhaps double profiling in Lightroom and this is causing color variations as you describe. I have tested this before and again after watching your vid and there is no discernible difference in both prints if you are setting up Lightroom correctly. When using Lightroom to print first go into the Print driver properties and double click on where it says ‘color/intensity Manual Adjustment’ select the ‘Matching’ tab and in the box ‘color correction’ choose ‘None’. Click ok. This means the print driver is not controlling color and allows the printing application, in this case Lightroom, to control color. Once you have done this In Media Type load the media type you are printing on. Then within Lightroom Print Module and in particular in the Color Management section load the ICC Profile for the media you are printing on and press print. If you have followed these steps correctly your print will have exactly the same hues and tones as the version you printed using Canon Professional Print & Layout.

Dave thanks for replying BUT I can confirm that the Printer Driver is not playing any part of this at all; it's off and not selected in Lightroom...I'm aware that this is where a lot of people can go wrong unintentionally when they have 2 profiles conflicting with each other and so causing incorrect prints, BUT in my case, Printing is only being defined by the Printing Application and the Paper Profile. Thanks for jumping in though...if folks go through comments then this will be great for them to see and go check. Cheers ps> Are you Mac or Windows based?

@@davewynne6857 YES, YES, YES - problem solved. I hated the idea of having to use an external app for printing. LR has always been my choice, but always on Epson printers. Epson drivers make it easy to turn off printer colour management. Canon printers seem to bury the important stuff several layers down. I found check box to stop the print driver from colour correcting thanks to Dave and now my prints match Canon PPL exactly. I print with the LR print module and use the correct ICC profile for the paper and voila! Thanks Dave!!!!!!

First of all, really really useful video Glyn, many thanks. Just got a new Canon Pro 300 and I am trying to get it set up properly. Coming to this a bit late, but can you (or any other Mac users here) please advise here I can access the Print Driver Properties to check for this issue mentioned by Dave? I've looked under System Preferences/Printers & Scanners/Options&Supplies - there are very limited options here and none at all that mention "color/intensity Manual Adjustment". I think I did read somewhere that Mac OS turns off Printer Color Management by default, but a bit of reassurance would be nice. Thanks.

Hallelujah! Someone else who has been struggling with lightroom printing. I'm running a Pro200 and have had exactly the same problem as you and arrived at the same solution after a full week trying to sort it out. In my case lr would print a b&w picture as greens. When the printer controlled the colour I got a perfect image, when I printed through photoshop it printed perfectly and when I used the Canon software it printed perfectly. This suggested that the problem is with lightroom despite everyone telling me it was something I was doing. The only thing I can add is that during my research, I came across a bit of information that when greys print green it would suggest no icc profile is being applied (if it prints magenta then both the printer and lightroom are applying icc profiles so on effect you get a double profile). This would suggest that there is an error/bug in lightrooms print module where it isn't applying a icc profile even though you/we are specifying it.

Scott...glad this has helped. Just to clarify, when printing to my Canon PIXMA PRO-10S, Lightroom was fine; it's with the latest model that I was / am having issues. May I ask...are you Mac or Windows based? The reason I ask is to see if you have the AirPrint utility working in Apple? If you do, then turn it off / don't use it. I've been speaking with a print house lately and they tell me that AirPrint also impacts the quality. They sent me an example and sure enough it's clear to see.

Very helpful video, answered a puzzle I had. I purchased a Canon PRO-300 about 6 months ago, my first pro-level photo printer. From the start, I was using the Canon PPL plug-in for LrC to do my printing. In general, I was getting good results. But as part of a digital printing workshop I'm taking now, I decided to try printing an image using both the Canon plug-in, and the LR Print module. Well, the results were drastically different, with the print direct out of LR way inferior to the print using the Canon plug-in. And I double checked all my settings to make sure I was doing the exact same thing with each print method. I'd like to understand better why the discrepancy, but this video reassures me that it isn't anything I was doing wrong. Going forward, I will be sticking with the Canon plug-in for all my prints!

I use an Epson but the problem is usually solved by deleting the printer and reinstalling it. Just takes 30 seconds. I agree about printing thru LR. Long story short, I very recently bought the Canon imagePROGRAF Pro-300. It was like falling in love again. I saw elsewhere that the Canon Professional Print & Layout app worked best. However, some of the items you ticked were grayed out when I tried to select them prior. After watching your video, don't know what was different, but they worked this time. And it made a difference. The colors were a tad more true and the full range of the grayscale showed a subtle difference between the 90% and the 100% black (which it hadn't before). Thanks, Glyn!

Hi Glen, I am printing on my Pro 300 with Canon photo paper plus glossy II. My photos print beautifully with Media type set to that paper,color mode at: use ICC profile, printer profile at: Pro 330/plus glossy IIA and rendering intent: perceptual . I assume these settings are correct? I have Epson photo paper left over from a four year miserable Epson P600 experience. 🥲 Is there an “easy” way to use the Epson paper and their Epson published ICC profiles with the Pro 300. As I become more proficient with the Pro 300 I will transition to the better quality paper that you suggest. Thank you

Hi Michael. Great hear that you're getting great results with t he Pro 300. Your settings look good to me; only one you 'may' test is the rendering intent to see if there's any noticeable difference (improvement) using relative...always worth just soft proofing to see if there is. As for the Epson paper you have left over, you could give it a try downloading their ICC Profiles but just make sure to check what the equivalent 'media type' will be for the Canon settings...if that makes sense. Please do keep me posted

Thank you Glyn,,,learned a thing or two. We have 3 Canon printers (Pro1000/100 for client work) and use Qimage One (Mac OS) rather than Canon’s print software PS plugin. The features are the same but Qimage One has a ink channel scheduled purge function which is a no fuss way to keep the nozzles on the pigment printer clean and avoids a nozzle cleaning cycle before each print run by timing the purge before the printer’s internal countdown timer triggers its own nozzle clean when the printer receives a print job.

Useful though I have a pro100S. I struggled at first to get good prints and then found that "pro" mode worked very well - no idea how it worked though. Subsequently I discovered that the "off the shelf" ICC profiles from paper manufacturers are pretty useless and the only way forward is to either do your own (if you have the hardware) or do a test print and send off for a customised profile from the paper supplier. I did this and have never looked back. Btw I always use print studio pro, that's my other tip if using Canon printers.

Hi Jason...thanks so much for the kind words about the video; glad it helps. As for your questions, the advice I can give most of all is to not use wireless printing. Wireless printing doesn't give access to the full driver so you won't get the best results by far. Wired connection is the way to go. Where are you based? UK? USA? etc... I would advise first of all using photo paper from a company that also provides generic profiles that you can install. First off though, try using Canon Papers and using the profiles they provide built in. Hope this helps.

Super helpful video which made me think differently...and that a test was in order since I've chased color differences between monitor and printer for a while now. It actually prevented me from printing more because I would get frustrated by differences I saw between monitor and printer output. My color profiling workflow matched yours precisely using the iStudio for both monitor and paper profiling - and that REALLY held my attention! I'm using a PRO-1000 and just did a test with the evaluation image...it matched my monitor almost perfectly. I then printed a recent image I was not happy with - that I had printed using the LR print module - and used the PP&L plug-in for LR (which automatically opens the image for you in PP&L). There was a noticeable change that definitely matched my monitor better. I then did another more challenging test with a very colorful image I was not happy with out of LR Print using a paper profile I created. I printed the first one again through LR and it was equally bad, then printed the same one with PP&L using the same paper and profile...the difference was shocking and matched my monitor perfectly. I'll have to do more tests, but I feel much more encouraged! Thank you...and yes...I've now subscribed!

Glyn, I can tell you something else about printing from Lightroom, which has made me bypass it and print directly through Canon Professional Print and Layout. If you print with PP&L via Lightroom, whatever quality setting you set, e.g. 300ppi, Lightroom will counter it by defaulting it to 240ppi. You will see this by positioning the mouse over the image in PP&L. The file info comes up with 240ppi, despite what was set in the Lightroom Print module. Christ knows why! (Or possibly, Adobe does!) Printing directly through the standalone PP&L, prints at exactly the quality setting you set.

Hi Leonard. Thanks so much for watching the video and for the kind words. To be honest I'm not familiar with the printer models you mention so I'll go and take a look. I guess all I can say really in this case is what I would do if those were my choices and that would be (as you suggest) not go for the one that has lots of bells and whistles that I wouldn't use. However if the print quality was better, and because the price difference isn't much between then, then I would go for it.

Hi Glyn, I continue to enjoy printing with the Pro 300 utilizing Canons Professional print and layout. I like both bordered and borderless prints. Hi Michael...Great to hear that you're still enjoying the results you're getting with the printing. As for bordered or borderless, to be honest I always do have a border but that's not because of some alleged damaged that borderless may cause, but is more for handling afterwards and if the image ends up being put into a frame meaning I don't lose any of the image if that makes sense. I have printed borderless however, and don't really subscribe to the idea that doing so causes damage...maybe in older models, but not in newer. That said...that is my thoughts on this; I haven't spoken with anyone directly at Canon.

Great video. So is there no need to do soft proofing if you use Canons software? Or, do you still do soft proofing and export that file to be printed ?
@glyndewis3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Scott. Great question and actually a really interesting point. In just a short time of printing this way (as yet) I've not done (or had to do) any soft proofing whereas I always checked in LR. The prints are coming out spot on using the Canon Software without any intervention. Obviously if they came out too dark that would mean my monitor/ screen wasn't calibrated correctly but as it is, and the colours are great...I couldn't be happier. I'll have a play with the soft proofing in the Canon Software though and will report back.

@@glyndewis Hi Glyn, revisited this video precisely because I am getting washed out Reds and Greens from My Pro 1000. The revelation was printing without the ICM driver, and letting the printer manage the colour. What a difference! So, nothing wrong with the printer. Tried CPL as standalone, and called via Lightroom, in each case with the Printer managing the colour, same result. So for me its my custom icc profile (I think) which is desaturating the prints. I am printing from a Mac(Monterey), so I have no way to 'double profile' so its either the Profile or the Printer not both. I am gong back to the Paper suppliers to see if I can get the profiles redone, or perhaps making my own profiles is the way to go?

Thanks for producing such a helpful vid and I enjoyed the content. However, I have also noted that it is possible to do "pattern printing" with this Canon printer that I have only had a few days and wondered if you had used this at all? I appreciate that with this quality of printer it is a huge leap for me as I have not had a decent printer for a couple of years or so but am kicking myself for investing in budget papers now that I have watched your video and some others on this Pro300 printer. I bought some paper on Amazon and stupidly realised now that it does not have ICC profiles so have had to set to a nearest value by guessing.
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel...I haven't tried 'pattern printing' but I may well take a look. As for the papers, yeah definitely worth looking at some others but with the ones you have, you can still get places like Permajet or. Fotospeed to do a profile for you for minimum cost. Might be worth considering.

Hi Glyn, I have purchased the Canon PRO 300 printer after viewing your excellent tutorial . I noticed that you printed the strawberry test photo with perceptual as the rendering intent while the biker photo used relative intent with black point compensation. Why one over the other? Thanks again for the superb demonstration.
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael...that's great to hear. Hoe you're happy with it. As for the strawberry test as all of the colours were within 'gamut' and I was using the Printer Driver the rendering intent was left at Photoshop's default of Relative. Black Print Compensation is disabled. For the biker, it was a case of checking to see which rendering intent gives the best result as there was a slight change between the two. Black Point Compensation was able to be used which is best too as this gives more range of blacks as opposed to 'crushing' them from a certain point. My printing course that I'm recording will cover this too...hope that helps.

Great video! I found Canon PP&L during the pandemic when getting frustrated by color reproduction on a new PRO-1000. I had a question regarding the “soft proofing” preview option. Is that intended to mimic the impact of the specific paper finish on color perception? Is there a recommended approach to pushing the image to compensate for that impact, or do you just accept the impact and adjust the paper choice? I notice you chose “Relative Colorimetric” for rendering intent. I see a lot of recommendations that “Perceptual”, although not as accurate, can provide more pleasing results. Is the choice for this more down to preference; would you always use relative colorimetric for color matching accuracy? Cheers!
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel...Soft Proofing is supposed to give you an idea of what your image will look like when printed on that certain paper and in software like Lightroom you can create a Proof Copy that you then edit to bring it more in line with the original...if needed. Paper choice is a big factor when it comes to printing and can unknowingly cause a lot of frustration. What I mean there is that folks will calibrate their screens perfectly, use a profile but then the image will come out maybe warmer than they expect but this is because of the paper properties and that it's designed to give images that look. As for Relative or Perceptual Rendering Intent, it depends on the image. I never take it to use one over the other but will always flip between them to see how they affect the image prior to printing. It's this stuff that I'm covering in the printing course once it's released but hope this helps here.👍

Hi Glynn, I am thinking of upgrading to the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 A2......I like it LARGE! I have never had a problem with LRc and the current printer. I had just assumed if I got a new model all I would have to do was send off the papers again for a new colour profile for each paper. (I Love Fotospeed papers) If my monitor was calibrated and I used the custom ICC profile for each paper, I cannot see why the new profile with the new printer would not work with LR. Are you saying it still will not print OK? or are you just suggesting that the canon software is better to print from? (With the older printers, Canon Print Studio is a bitch to configure with LRC and does not really work. It only works with Photoshop) Enjoyed the video keep them coming. Good vid! I have the Pro100s which can't use this software, I note that Canon want £160 for a full set of inks for the 300!!!!! do you refill or not, if not how many prints are you roughly getting from each cart as it (sadly) seems to me printing at home is becoming too expensive for the average hobbyist :(
@glyndewis2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I saw that the Pro100s can't use the software...shame that. As for the inks, I only use genuine branded inks and yeh it can be a bit costly. I've not had it long enough to say how long or how many prints I'm getting from each and it's also difficult to do that as each image would use more or less of each of the inks each time depending on what the picture is of. I do wish the (maybe it is) the Pro 300 could be bottle fed...I may look into that.

@glyndewis3 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely calibrate the monitor / screen. ICC profiles will tell the computer and printer how to interpret the colour so the ink hitting the paper matches the colours they should be. Calibrating does colour, brightness, contrast. So many times people will get prints where the colours are great but the print is too dark...that's because the calibration hasn't been done correctly ie the screen display is too dark.
