1900 isn't a beginner. It's a class A player (1800 to 1999) Expert defined as 2000+ up until the master levels

Bd2 is an interference AND attraction AND overworked piece tactic all rolled into one. I don't know if Ben has seen it in this particular sort of position, but I'm sure he's seen this sort of tactic before. For my part, I was entranced by the possibility of Nxf3 being possible, so I kept looking for ways to either bring the other knight to d4 without losing the e5 knight, or drawing the queen away from the defense of f3. The fact that the queen is overworked defending f3 and d3 (and indirectly, d5) is the key, although since those squares are connected, the usual means of defeating an overworked piece won't work. There's no way I'm ever seeing this OTB.
