GM Delco Alternator Repair

The GM Delco Remy alternator, with internal voltage regulator, is a relatively indestructible and easy to understand unit. Premiering mainly on GM's cars and trucks from the mid 1970s through the latter 1980s, this alternator type is typical of what can be found on most older GM vehicles along with a multitude of industrial applications produced by various manufacturers, some of which are still being built to this day. Voltage output on these alternators can be determined simply by which stator is installed. Safety goggles a MUST and always use EXTREME CAUTION around moving parts!!!

When i was a HS kid in the 70s I rebuilt all my starters and alternators on my cars didnt have the money for a rebuilt one... Old mechanic taught me a lesson i never forgot..

This video is without a doubt the best video ever made for rebuilding the ac delco alternator. a simple test light for checking instead of a voltmeter, ohm meter. and diode tester. Everything done without unnecessary showing of the removal of every nut and screw. No wasted time showing how to do it. Everyone should ignore the other rebuilders and simply follow your excellent video. Even showing how to tell if the voltage regulator is bad. Other videos have shown that the voltage regulator needed to be tested with a very expensive tester. If, as you have shown you short out the regulator and it causes it to charge then the regulator is no good. You have produced a excellent video. Thank you

Ive rebuilt more of them old alternators than i care to count ..back when i was in school in the 80's my fad had and alternator and starter shop....both domestic and import from cars ,lt trucks,to big diesel starters and alternators

Best way check Alternator bad on back there circle round bump were bearing inside , have engine running put screwdriver on see stick like magnet to it and if don't have stick on you need rebuild totally inside! Plus if digital tester checker on ground probe to battery connection of + red probe plus the regulator wires see if near 12 to 14 voltage if not got get new regulartor kit plus bearing too also check amps if 100 amp has less 50 amps when vechile running time rebuild too!

I actually bought a voltage regulator at Walmart once. Most parts houses carry the diodes, rectifier bridges and brush packs or even just simply the brushes themselves. Ford, Dodge and GM used to all use the same bearings, not sure how it is now tough. Realisticlly it isn't practical to rebuild an alternator any more with the inexpensive price of a ReMan but I thought I would create the video for someone that may not have easy access to a parts house. Maybe the video will help someone on a farm or remote area cobble one together if they had a pile of alternator cores that don't work - realistically, I think I just like tinkering with them. can current cutt out relay be used on those old delco alternators? Where did you exactly point in that hole at what place on the voltage regulator to force him charge? I have problems I use external capacitors on me ignition coil when ever I use ceramic hv capacitors the starting charge goea up insted 1000rpm me alternator constantly back chargeing true the dashboard it stops glowing alternator bulb if I reach 3000-4000rpm. So any one know how I culd manuali control how much alternator will charge and on what rpm range be useing potenciometer perhaps? Me alternator is Europ version Delco 12 si I do not have that capacitor or resistor in the alternator be use only tractor alternator have capacitors. So Im curriuse to know how much voltage does that regulator need or rotor to fully charge ? And what does that stick has to do with any thing??? Any way Im looking manuali operating alternator because of problems that acure be me who I do not know how to solve so thats why I asked if current cutt of selenoid wuld he might work I dont care how much voltage flows me baterry alwaya runs around 15-16v thats not the problem only me problem is alternator starting charge interacts with capacitors . If any one know how to fix that problem please help me .

Brush retainer pin does what and is it purchased separately?

The brushes are spring loaded to run against the copper slip rings, the retainer pin simply holds them in place long enough to allow assembly - I've literally used tooth picks as brush retainer pins. We used to be able to buy the brushes and springs separately without the brush housing,, not sure if you still can or not. Thanks for watching!

Where does the brush retaining pin go in?

The pin (you can use a toothpick) is installed into the brush pack before the brush pack goes into the alternator, the pin then extrudes out the rear of the back-alternator casing, enabling you to install the diode trio, rectifier bridge, stator and rotor. After you install the rotor and other components, then join the case halves and bolt them together. Then remove the pin, or toothpick, and she should be ready to go to work! What is a 'D' hole?

The D hole, in the earlier Delco alternators, is shaped like a "D" and enables someone to by-pass the voltage regulator by grounding the negative brush, thus determining if the voltage regulator is functioning or not. Thanks for watching!
