That supercharged 3800 is a blast. All the reliability of the bulletproof 3800 that GM made for a long time. With the power of a eaton m90 blower on top of it. Such a cool car. Even 21 years later it's amazing to see one in such great shape. The 1997 to 2003 Grand prixs used to be everywhere but as a kid I always looked for the GTP badge on the door.
@bwofficial1776 Жыл бұрын
That engine was a sleeper and is easy to tune. It's rare to see one of these now because Pontiacs got cheap pretty quickly.

@@bwofficial1776 I did a look on autotrader, there aren't many for sale and the ones in good shape are about $10,000 now. I remember a time when you could buy these cars in good shape for $5,000 with less than 100k miles. I don't think you can even find them like that today .

I think it's a great looking car for the era! I still remember the late 90's Pontiac commercials where they touted the Grand Prix's "Wide-Track" design echoing heritage ads from the 1960's. I had a 2002 GTP for 3 or 4 years and it was fun and reliable. A good value, for sure. I miss that car and wish I hadn't sold it. Wouldn't be surprised at all to see it on the road today.

That gray early-00s GM switchgear is oddly comforting. The supercharged 3800 was a sleeper engine and is easy to tune. This car is clean. It seems that Pontiacs turn into beaters especially fast so to see one running, let alone one that's in good shape is rare. Early 2000s Pontiacs all kind of look and sound the same. It's hard to tell the difference between a Grand Prix, a Grand Am, and a Bonneville. The ribbed taillights and curved sides are distinctly Pontiac. The one with four reverse lights always fascinated me.

It's extremely easy for me to recognize the differences between early 00's Pontiac sedans, especially since the Bonneville has an very pronounced wedge shape and an extremely distinctive tail light cluster with amber turn signals, the only Pontiac with them at the time.

I bought an '04 in 2016 out of desperation, because my Monte Carlo was totaled, and needed a car asap. It had about110,000 miles on it. I bought it because it was the only one on the car lot that didn't look like a mutation. I didn't qualify for a car loan, so I put it on a credit card. Not many places will take a credit card, because THEY want the interest money. Unfortunately, whoever had the car before me didn't perform oil changes, as there was a large amount of sludge in the oil pan when I had a remanufactured engine installed last year (2022). They also poured green anti-freeze in with the Dexcool. In the last year, I've replaced nearly every other component under the hood. I even had to replace the steering rack. It now has 238,000 miles on the car, but the engine and the other parts are only a little over a year old. I had to declare bankruptcy shortly after I purchased the vehicle, so I got it next to nothing. In spite of having to replace all of that, I'm glad I bought it. The 3800 engine is extremely reliable, as long as you change the oil regularly. I'm looking forward to keeping this car for the next decade or longer: hopefully I'll drive it into retirement. If I was making more money, I'd still probably own one of these. I still like it better than the new cars that I've rented while I had this one repaired.

I still love the styling. It drives fine (adding front and rear strut tower braces and switching to synthetic power steering fluid helped greatly). Those strut braces stiffened and quieted the body considerably. But would still like to have a Bonneville. Thanks for this review.

I was really into the W-body platform back in the day and remember day dreaming about getting one of these back in 2001-2002. I would drive to the dealer and look them over at least once a week. Recently, I was looking around the area and had seen an 02 for sale, dark red, just over 100k miles for $6k. I wanted it badly but with how old they are and the fact they come up for sale every few months and this one hide minor hail damage, I had to pass. I think there are better deals without hail damage for less. I might just jump on one of these but with that, I think i'd rather have the Monte Carlo with this engine.

This is what I am in the process of putting into my Chevette. Desmogged L67 supercharged 3800, tuned, larger injectors and E85 fuel with a smaller boost pulley for more boost. Are you sure this thing is making 400 hp? Does the owner have a build sheet? That sounded very tame for 400 hp. Most exhaust, smaller pulley, and a tune 3800's don't even crack 300 crank hp, much less 300 whp. Most M90 builds need E85 and/or rockers to be over 300 whp.
@FalseHoodx5 ай бұрын
It’s not even close to 400 lol to get 400 out of this setup you need an aggressive cam, headers back, smallest pulley you can put on it ported blower, built motor and on E then you’ll be in the 400 range lol this guy was smoking something when he said 400 id say it’s probably making about 260 wheel with what he’s done to it depending on how aggressive the tune is.

I bought the orignal 1997 GTP new & fully specd out (1st model/year) and was the best American car I owned and loved until it starting fallint apart at the 25k milestone. Pure American junk and its no wonder Pontiac doesn't exist. Interior plastics and leather aged terribly, creaks and cracks everywhere at 10k miles, buttons print wore out, you could hear the wind and road noise at anything over 40mph. In closing a fun car, decent drivetrain for its time especially for a FWD "sports sedan" but honestly an overall terrible GM craftsmanship and build quality of a car. I had high hopes for my 1st ever American GM vehicle purchased in 1997 but instead felt like I bought one of those cheap 3d printed animal figures from a zoo and promised myself to never ever buy American vehicles again. #SorryNotSorry
