GM G-body Dash Removal and Speedo Cable Replacement

This time we remove, inspect and install a new speedo cable on the GM g-body platform, using an ACdelco replacement part.

They used a two piece cable with cruise control. The first cabe comes from the transmission drive gear, to the driven gear. (if Changing tire size, there are charts online for picking the right driven gear by color) Once the correct driven gear is installed by removing the entire drive assembly, place trans-gel or Vaseline on the shaft) then run cable on the left mounted cruise control module. Many eliminate the module so use a tape measure and helper to get a gentle curve and back inside thru firewall back to the IP (Instrument Cluster). At this point on "Rock Auto" or wherever, pick a cable that is 3-7" longer. The cable is dry out of the box. It is removed from the IP end. This is not too hard as most in the 80's had a spring steel tab. When pressed toward the IP cluster, it comes out. This was common for 30+ years, no un-screwing. Remove flex cable from housing, dry with clean towel, spray the cable with white lithium lube or axle grease. Just keep the axle grease thin or light coating. (Do with what you have / if needed, try a home improvement store in automotive as they are half price of Auto stores! Apply grease to cable, note and push in from correct housing end. Once completed, don't forget to use firewall grommet, route it away from exhaust and if needed, wire tie to the frame member. Just plan for a blind reach underneath the dash, to get the cable on the speedo fitting. It can take seconds or 1/2 hour. To make it easy, place lube on tip of flex cable, have helper underneath car (Cable Disconnected) turn it either direction. You have to feel the speedometer fitting, hold it straight or re-route it thru the steering column support, but try to get it headed on straight! Once there, the spring steel clip will yield allowing the cable to slide onto the speedometer. It clips in place so no fiddling with the cable. Not lubing the cable will cause noise, jumping readout and premature cable failure. Do it right once, it will last 30+ years without a problem. DK, ASE Master Tech since 78.

I’m talking about where it goes through along the steering shaft and through the wires and connects to the dash, I got it through once but it wouldn’t connect at the angle I had it, so I pulled back out and trying again.

When running the cable through the dash how did you run it through I’m struggling to get it back through the hole in the dash where it connects?

Casper Electronics refurbishes and calibrates the old stuff but I know Dakota Digital makes gauges and clusters, not sure on the 442.
