I've driven both. The 6.2 pushrod v8 Chevy makes is great for low rpm grunt work, endless torque on demand to where you'll find yourself doing hillclimbs without dropping a gear. The Ford 5.0L is great to play with at mid to high rpms and never feels short of breath. Both have positives and negatives. But at the end of the day, you won't be disappointed to own either of them

It's the joy of getting to drive all maker's designs that makes it so much fun to switch manufacturers every few years when a new version comes out. Getting old ain't bad, since I can now afford a new car every few years. That house I bought in 1977 for $40K and sold for $625K turned out to be a good investment, when I moved to a retirement home that only cost us $50K.

@D.E.B. B must've been nice buying houses in that kind of market. I bought my first place at $325k in 2017, bought a second in 2019 for $488k, and a third last year for $460k. If I were building my investment in your market, I would probably be over a dozen houses in the same length of time. But that was a different time, back before our government destroyed our way of life.

Intake, exhaust and E85 on a Gen 3 coyote can get you in the 600hp range. That kinda settled it for me, especially combined with the 10 speed. Hell, you have 4.6L 2v's now that can get just under 500 N/A since people are making serious heads for them now (after 20 years, lol finally). Either way, I like the idea of making 5 to 600 ish hp N/A with a 5.0. The coyote simply has a more efficient cylinder and head design due to it's relatively small bore but proportionately large stroke (the ideal cylinder is actually 1/2L with the stroke being slightly larger than the bore). The coyote would be at its most efficient if it was 4 liters (like all the european v8s are). A bigger engine will obviously make more power but as he stated, the coyote is roughly 24 percent more efficient than the 6.2.

Before (big block) gasoline engines go away, I wish Ford would make a 7 liter version of the Coyote engine. Use the same bore and stroke as the 427 FE. Yes, it would be bigger and longer than the current engine, but at roughly 780hp and still driveable, it would be the meanest naturally aspirated crate engine ever.

The coyote loves premium, empty most won't notice a difference in power except I get a 1.3mpg average better fuel mileage. Now towing, especially on a hot day, premium really helps the mid range power. But unlike the Chevy v8s the coyote pulls strong all the way till the transmissions shifts, making the gears have a longer usable power band. A stock Chevy V8 truck engine seems to run strong up to 3800 rpm and then kinda falls flat, its still pulling strong, it just doesn't gain much after that.

Ford went in the way with downsized turbo 4/6 bangers to please the epa. However GM and Chrysler wanted to keep giving the people what they want, the people still wanted ohv V8 engines but the epa wouldn't have it, so D.O.D later changed to AFM for gm and Chryslers MDS systems was designed to please epa standards, that's why gm and Chryslers included these systems in their cars and trucks. I have an old Ford FE in the form of a '64 352, the SBC represented by a '65 283, and I have a 6.0 LS and 5.0 Coyote. Naturally the Coyote smokes them all for power, but I don't own a LT and that LS is stock. One note about the voodoo that makes it even more special than you describe: In your picture the crank journals are Up, Down, Down, Up all 180 deg. from each other. This is what all flat plane crank V8s are designed as. However the voodoo is Up, Down, Up, Down. Google a picture of the voodoo crankshaft. This makes it a bespoke design that is sort of a mix between traditional flat-plane and cross-plane. It truly is a special engine and unique piece of engineering that we might never see again.

Enjoyed this video as I own both an '11 Mustang GT with the first gen 412 hp Coyote 6 speed manual and a '19 C7 LT engine Stingray 7 speed manual, and your analysis is spot on... When I drive the 'vette I really enjoy the low end torque and acceleration. The Mustang pulls well, but over a longer period and not as viscerally. Both engines are masterpieces of engineering... The Coyote gets about 24-25 mpg on the highway and the 'vette will do 30 mpg if I activate the AFM and keep my foot out of it... It's satisfying to get a 500 mile range on an 18 gallon tank :D On the occasional track day, the Mustang struggles as its suspension and brakes aren't really intended for the track, it has like a 60/40 weight distribution, making turns more challenging, while the 'vette was designed from the jump for handling with a 50/50 weight split. Both cars do really well on 11+ hour road trips as well.

Went through the engine build experience for my ZR1. After assembly they weigh the engine, as they fill the oil by weight not by volume - 590 lbs for the LT5. Prior to owning the ZR1, I was driving the GT350 - and you right. The engine is absolutely amazing. I enjoyed driving it even after I picked up the ZR1. It is something completely different and great in it's own way. You really have to rev that engine out. It doesn't lack low end torque, but it is noticeably less then the LT5 even before it gets into boost, and honestly it makes it more fun to drive on the street in a lot of cases as you won't kick the back end out at lower rpms with more generous throttle input. It blows people away the first time in it when you just hold it in gear forever. The LT5 is just amazing torque and power everywhere. There is not wrong gear or too low of an RPM - if you floor it, it will send you back.

The Coyote being shorter front to back than many V8s actually suprised me. I'm in the process of replacing my Gen 1 Coyote short block with a Gen 3 short block. I was able to pull the engine out of my 2012 GT without removing the radiator or fan. I also had enough room at the firewall to get to the bell housing bolts very easily. The only hickup I had was having to detach the steering shaft so that I could pull the engine with the exhaust manifolds attached. The coyote is really not that complicated to work on either. I think the DOHC setup seems to make people think that it's just a huge ordeal to work on. It's not. And if so,what does that say about their engineers? Simple fact is GM engineers unconstrained run circles around Ford engineers. BTW…the magnetorheological shocks that let your Mustangs halfway keep up with Camaro’s? Thank GM for those. Y’all whine incessantly about displacement…5.0 vs 5.3/6.0/6.2. Two different schools of thought…but when GM decides to go for the added complexity of DOHC they’ll wipe the floor with your vaunted “Cowdoodie”. BTW…what’s with Ford and these stupid nicknames? High reviving crossplanes can be done quite easily, it’s just that the cam profiles and cylinder head design makes them very lazy down low. Project spinal tap is quite a neat take on that very subject with the LS platform. The argument that pushrods and cross planes don’t like to rev was proven untrue 30 years ago. Modern spintron testing and camshaft development has made RPM even easier to achieve with 8000+ rpm cam lobes that are requiring less than 100 lbs of seat pressure.

It not done for the revs. It's done for the reduced rotating mass which allows the engine to change revs quicker and also the exhaust scavenging. A flat plane crank is typically much lighter often about half that of a cross plane. It's the same reason if you're a road racer you would choose a light weight flywheel, allow quick up and down shifts. It was a way bigger deal during the manual trans days but it's easier on DCT too. There are some test where a Coyote crank was put into Voodoo and they made about the same power and torque. I think cross plane made a bit more torque and slightly less power, very small though. In terms of red line it's soft red line based off where the engine rolls over. If it's not a limitation of the bottom or top end in either case. That's not true of the Voodoo crank and I suspect that it wont be true of the C8's new 5.5L. It's lighter but only by a few pounds because of the large displacements. Those engine are using flat planes mostly for marketing hype. The C8R engine is heavily restricted by rules so the production engine will make considerably more power.

It's nice to see the ford geeks finally have an option that isn't embarrassing...but none of these "advantages" mean anything to me. LS/LT is applicable to more people, more cars, more random vehicles like boats, helicopters, and airplanes... These days you are really splitting hairs when you compare HP/gas mileage. The only question I want answered is, which one lasts, and which one is cheaper/easier to fix when it does break?
@evanc6110

LS is more readily available, and most mechanics know them inside and out, coyotes are reliable as a 4.6 2V can be, but they make more power. The only problem is they’re more advanced than the LS, which means it takes a bit more experience to work on it. Agreed however LS works a lot more for random applications, I’m just glad to see Ford’s running Ford engines again.

The Coyote "should" outlast the pushrod engines due to the OHC design being more efficient, lighter valve train weight and DI and Port injection. An argument can be made however if the Coyote and LS\LT are both abused at high RPM's, the LS\LT should suffer less crank and rod bearing wear. But no way will a Coyote be cheaper (or easier) to repair. I'm a pretty good grease monkey and those things are much more difficult to wrench on!

Pretty decent comparison, better than some I have seen. This comment is not about trashing the Coyote but rather to bring up the advantages that were not gushed on concerning the LS/LT. I don't like your take on horsepower vs displacement. The reason being is that the statistic is useless. The ONLY forum where horsepower vs displacement has use is in a man-made construct. For example when man-made laws restricts one side or the other...in most cases that is going to be displacement. If you are limited to a specific displacement...HP per liter matters. But in the laws of PHYSICS...something man has no control over...horsepower per unit of weight is a MUCH more relevant statistic. And while it is closer than most engines...the LS and LT engines take this statistic and also takes it with Torque. The engine has more power and torque to move less weight. I think that is an extremely important figure..Now another physics advantage that was slightly touched on but not discussed as to why it is an advantage is the size of the motor. It was shown the LS/LT take up less space. especially in HEIGHT. This allows for the engine to sit lower in the car which lowers the center of gravity and aids weight distribution which helps in driving performance, specifically cornering. Again this is not about bashing the Coyote...which is a fabulous engine and I would take the Voodoo powered GT350 over the GT500 any day. And this is going to sound backwards because I am not the biggest Flat Plane Crank fan...there is just so much that has to be done to keep it from shaking itself apart....while the cross plane balances nicely. I also kind of like the lower growl from a cross plane.....But when it comes down to it...the simplicity/reliability/ and other points I mentioned would lead me to the LS/LT....And we didn't even get into cost not only to get but to modify...In the end both great engines...But there is a reason the small block chevy is historically and arguably the best engine ever made...

To expand on the hp to unit of weight.....The LS7 (NA so I think a good comparison) is about 454 pounds( (assembled with clutch, flywheel, balancer, and water pump). The 5.0 Coyote (from 2018) weighs in at 444 without those added pieces. The LS cranks out 505 HP conservatively...it also cranks out 481 lb/ft of torque....giving the LS 1.112 hp and 1.059 lb/ft of torque for each lb of the engine....while the Coyote has 1.036 hp and .94 lb/ft of torque respectively...Don't like the 427 cu. inch comparison...well the LS3 weighs in at 403 with the same installments as the LS7...giving numbers of 1.079 hp and 1.062 lb/ft of torque per pound of the engine. You want to look at the Hemi's...the 6.4 (392) is the largest NA engine comes in at a whopping 500 lbs. cranking out 485 hp and 475 lb/ft of torque giving the power to weight ratio under 1 in each category....So you are looking at these numbers and thinking that the numbers are very close and don't mean much...well these little numbers add up...we are talking an extra 35 hp that the LS7 has that doesn't have to do work and the LS3 has just under 20hp extra that doesn't have to do work in comparison to the Coyote...Tell me anyone who wouldn't want an extra 20-35 hp without any modifications....(and they are doing it with assemblies added weight unlike the Coyote)....displacement is not the the important statistic here...it is weight.

Both engine architectures are absolute masterpieces Ford and GM should be commended for both of them however as you mentioned in a sports car app I would prefer the compact low low center of gravity style of the Lt purely for weight I believe it weighs a little bit less but the center of gravity is substantially lower and that is your friend when it comes to cornering and having a lower polar moment of inertia for breaking and getting back on the accelerator out of corners just my humble opinion
