You completely saved the day! The little clip that goes with the plastic chime insert under the lock had fallen out and I did not know where it came from. I had to stop my repair until I knew where it went. Your video is very detailed thank you very much!

This is, hands down, the absolute best video on tearing down one of these earlier GM steering columns! True step by step, with detailed explanations. The way a repair video would be made! I had to tear down the column on my 1986 GMC s-15 Jimmy in order to replace the shift lever return spring, which required.the same breakdown to the point of this repair. I was a little apprehensive, even after watching some other videos before this one. But after watching this several times, the whole process made complete and confidence boosting sense. Thanks, Hutch, for the great job you did on this!

FINALLY! Thank you for making this excellent video. Your presentation is spot on & to the point with no extra bullshit. You've made it easy to follow along step by step & give excellent tips & thorough instructions. Thank you again your work has been a God sent for an old girl that has learned to do my own auto repairs instead of letting so called mechanics "help" results in disastrous consequences. Many blessings & keep making videos you've got a gift many others can benefit from.

Awesome video my dude! 20 years plus since I rebuilt one. Nowadays everything is just not as 'easy' as it used to be. This video was a nice cheat code. My 1988 TA was identical, except for cruise, and delay wipers. Still a pain, but got it all lubed up, and a new turn, and wiper switch. Works great now! Thank you! 8-32 screws helped pull the pins. I did it in the car. I de-pinned the connectors and fed wires with a string.

Thanks to your video, I fixed my 87 s10 steering column, where two mechanics failed to do so. It wasn't loose, I just had the slide gear break and the first mechanic told me it wasn't made aftermarket so I didn't question it, got a second mechanic and agreed on a plan to put in a push start, there was a missing bearing I said I would replace, that bearing led to me finding and buying the slide gear and then your video. My truck is running again and I can't thank you enough.

This is definitely the best video on this task out there. It worked like a charm on my 79 Trans Am and I had the laptop in the car through the whole process watching step by step. I hope this guy continues to make more videos and creates a channel of his own because he knows what he's doing as a mechanic and also as an instructional video producer!! PS: take his advice and get the Lisle pin extractor. I got the stepped bolt version from my local auto parts store because that's all they had in stock and it broke on the first bolt exactly as he had said. Then I ordered the correct tool and it worked perfectly.

@hutchhiperf I just bought my first squarebody and with the amount of movement my tilt steering column had there was no WAY everything was looking good in there - to the point where I was already questioning wether I would be better off buying a new steering column, since I had never taken one of these on but since your video made it look so easy to understand I thought I would take it on myself...an indeterminate amount of time later, It is all put back together, and with maybe 1/4" of wiggle, where there used to be 6 inches... thank you for the time it took to make this video! I feel like I could not only do it again, but competent enough to teach someone else...there really is nothing to be scared of

I just completed this. I watched other videos as well and after watching one of them I dove into the process. I was pretty much in the middle of it and found that the re-assembly process wasn't going as it should. I had 3 of the 4 screws that were completely loose, not a single thread attached. The 4th screw was only hanging on by a few threads. I'm amazed that I didn't have problems driving my truck (89 Silverado). Anyway, after watching this very detailed video I was able to complete the repair. Works great. Many thanks!!

probably the best vid on this subject. However, put the key sensor in before installing lock cylinder. much easier. gm tilt columns are easy prey for thieves. they break the housing between the tilt lever and the turn signal lever, pop out the gear, the locking rod falls down, pull the gear rack back and your car is gone. I've repaired over 1k columns from 79 to 89.

@@hutchhiperf It's been 9 months since I started the project, and today it's all but done- just have to button up the under dash panels. With your excellent guide, and an almost-bare steering column a friend gave me, I was able to get my truck up and running, and the awful wobble is gone! I had gotten so used to having to lift the column to get it out of park, even, that I tried doing it again. The pin that I broke the screw off in ended up getting destroyed with an angle grinder, along with the housing, so I could get to the internals to finish off the parts column. "fun" times. LOL.

I also have a 93 s10 Blazer, which I think is as well!! I had watched at least 4 hours of other videos prior to digging in. Some are descent for sure, but still missing important aspects, and the lack of detail meant a lot was touch-and-go. I wonder if you may be limiting your views with your title. Thank you! I was about to give up on my 86 gmc jimmy's steering column and just buy a new one, but your video showed me what I need to do to get in there and replace that part that pulls the actuator arm from the lock cylinder to the ignition switch (mine broke in half). they're basically the exact same steering column. I gotta get the standard ignition us165l repair kit, and that lisle 19940, but once those get here I'll have it done pretty quick using this as a reference. Thank you!

This is a wonderful video--thank you so much for producing this! My daughter has a 1988 Jeep Cherokee with the standard floppy steering column problem--and we have taken the steering column down (removed the pivot assembly) to the point where we can access the four bolts--and they are tight and in the plate--and the column is still loose-- do we need to remove the four torx bolts and allign the plate they screw into somehow? Appreciate any advise--can send pictures.

I see this video was put out, around 4 years ago. I have a 1988 Buick Electra Park Ave. with a loose column. Just got it tore down to the 4 bolts that need Loctite red or blue and retightening. I see your doing this at a bench with the blinker or any other wires that run down the side of the column unhooked. mine are still hooked, ( I think) as "I" did pull on them. I wonder if the first thing I should of done is find out where they or it hook's, and see if it's possible to get at them and unhook the connector. Of coarse, I'm almost at the reverse it all stage, but to even tighten the bolt's, I can't even see all 4 at one time with those wires prohibiting me from removing the housing completely out of the way. well back out to work on it

@@hutchhiperf I just finished putting in the pivot pins 1/2 way. That means that Ign.SW Actuator Rack or (funny lookin) aluminum piece must of stayed behind the notch. As to prove it ( and I don't know any other way), as I "can't see," the rod move when turning the ignition cylinder ( temporary put in place) other than "see if it will start"& It did. Means, don't have to take that back off! Well I was saying in my other reply or wondering if a guy can just pull those blinker wires (there might 1 other set) I 'm not sure, as I never unhooked the connectors. I pulled them the normal 3 or 4 inches. Only To tighten the bolts ( the ones needing Loctite) I finally got the housing for the tilt around the "threaded steering wheel shaft" by tilting the shaft all the way down . then "squeaked" by. Seems I "can't" get the socket on the bolts with out the nylon plastic u-joint getting in the overlapping way. I put the steering wheel nut back on and locked a vice grip on it and pulled towards the rear of the car this moved the U-joint back enough to easily get the socket on each of them.
