Excellent instructions my friend! I would not have thought the bearing in the kit I bought would have ever snapped in the retainer without breaking the retainer. I watched you do it before I tried it... worked like a champ. Thanks!

Most people do not know how easy it is to unbolt the steering column. You do not even need to disconnect any wiring to do this. Unbolt the top half of the column support plate at the firewall (2 nuts and 2 bolts), then remove the column bolts just at dash. You can now pull the whole column back several inches, disconnecting your steering shaft. I live where the rust roams free, and I have never seen a steering column retract like it should, so this is the workaround. Beating and hammering like you did is a great way to waste a ton of time, and damage stuff. If it doesn't come apart, take more stuff apart. Yes, as you mentioned you can drop your steering box as well, but it is heavy and awkward with everything attached to it. Go for the column, you will save your self a lot of grief.

Okay I tried this and the bar wouldn’t collapse. We fixed it without removing the bar or it collapsing by instead removing the bolts of the power steering gearbox and supporting it on a table Jack (but we didn’t disconnect the hoses). We only shifted the box about and inch or two but it was enough to remove the bar, get the old bearing off the column, and put the new one on. You have to be really careful that you don’t move things too much and damage the hoses, I’d recommend a buddy to help! Good luck!

The shaft between the gear box and column is designed to collapse on impact. And I believe it is glued together with some factory "gorilla snot" just like an MJ. The only way to make it slip is by heating the outer shaft to soften the gorilla snot. That particular shaft is adapted to Chevy trucks to eliminate the rag joint with actual u-joints. Those shafts are used in other offroad and "ricky racer" applications where u-joints are more desirable than rag joints.

Thanks!! I try to keep is real. As a "KZbinr" (that just sounds weird .. lol) and doing video editing, I can chop and edit the video anyway I want it. I can make it look sooooo easy. If I did that, I would be doing everyone an injustice. Sometimes it makes the videos excessively long. But getting the proper information out is more important to me. Glad you like the video!! Thanks for taking the time to leave a cool comment! Have a great day!

I changed the steering box, the rod wouldnt collapse so I heated it with the torch until red hot, it came apart. I sanded, put a little grease, works like new.
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 6 жыл бұрын
That's about the only tool I don't have. I got a plasma and 2 welders, but no torch set. It definitely needed heated to break all the rust and crud loose. When I first tried it about a month ago it would collapse at all. A month of hitting it with PB blaster every couple of days allowed it to collapse but then wouldn't come back out. It was a fight but the battle was won!! If I ever have to pull it back out I'll put it in my engine puller and pull it apart then sand and grease it. Heck, should have done it while I had it out this time. Good hearing from ya bud! Have a good one!!

Thanks for another great video. I had a terrible time with my frozen steering shaft on my 94 YJ. Spent two days heating it and squirting with PB Blaster. Nothing would budge it. Then I read the comment below about heating it until it turns red with a torch. Took about 10 minutes to start to glow red in places. Hit the end with a wooden block and it finally moved! The only think I'm not sure of it I have weakened the heat treat on the shaft with the high heat and possibly making it easier to break???

I have quite a bit of slop in my steering. When driving down the road, my YJ seems to have a mind of it's own as far as direction of travel. I have replaced the steering box, (leaking) hydraulic lines and reservoir. I am going to check to see if the bearing is the culprit. Thanks. I enjoy your videos!

If the shaft wont collapse it should be replaced. It's designed that way in case of a front end collision. If it's frozen it will jam the steering into your chest.

The collapsible steering shaft is just another "safety" feature that probably wouldn't work properly if you were in a serious front end collision!

I actually was in a wreck and the CJ 5 wiped out the pick up truck in front. The shaft performed as promised. The truck was totaled I took a Come Along pulled the engine and Transmission and transfer back in place cripped radiator tubes. Bend fenders back out. REMOVED THE 6" CHANNEL IRON BUMPER WHICH TURNED INTO A W. AND DROVE ANOTHER 220,000 MILES. THE CJ5 is one hell of a ride. Tough as they come. Treat it right. It will not let you down. They will roll on sharp turns or steep grades The Saginaw Steering is guick and you must learn to drive all over again or you will be in a ditch on the roads. OF ROAD IF IS A PACK MULE AND DESERVES ITS REPUTATION.. Then size is great you dont drive in the ruts. It goes where other can't because of it smaller size. Doesn't need as much ground clearance. Shorter wheel base and narrower matters Of Road. I ran Loggin Roads for years as a Caver. The CJ 5 Jeep did indeed write the book on 4 wheel drive. My wife and kids all cryed when I traded it for a Truck after almost 10 yrs. And over 250 k miles. We have owned several jeeps but that little 78 Sun Orange CJ 5 49 state model was a wonderful machine. Oh I like the I-6 four speed Off Road better than the V8. Seems better balance and not nose heavy on climbs. Rebuilding one 78 Renegade Levi Tan with Dark Brown Paint. Some floor and body patching. Lotta new stuff. Old jeep never die. THEY HELPFULLY GET REBUILT WELL.

This doesn’t fix the slop in the cab my lower bearing is fine and i still have tons of play in my steering wheel. You have to pull the steering wheel and tighten the bolts holding the tilt housing.

Hey Chuck great video. Thank you for the content. Well done as always. I l like how you make things work and figure it out, but would you consider or recomend replacing the collapsing rod altogether? Are they difficult to find?
@Poweraddicts
@Poweraddicts 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you like it! Typically people replace that rud when the little U-Joints get real loose. Mine had a tiny bit of play in them so looseness in the steering wasn't really detectable. It drives and feels fine. From a nuisance point of view like this one being stuck. It would have been much less of a headache to deal with. I just did a quick Google search and found several vendors that have them. Thanks for dropping in and leaveing a great comment!! Have a great day!

Question for all you guys my bearing shaft would slide into the column when trying to install the new bearing is this normal or is something broken inside the column. Not the steering shaft that came off easy the rod where the bearing rides on the one the guy said to sand before installing the bearing.

Is there supposed to any “turning” play where the steering shaft meets the steering gear box? By turning play, I mean twisting left to right before the wheels start moving
