Best video of how to do this job on KZbin. Hands down. I’m kind of surprised the guy didn’t have you put a new Pitman arm on there at least. I’m getting ready to do an entire steering replacement on my ‘03 Sierra 2500HD Dmax. Went with the Redhead box and Kryptonite on everything else. Should be the last time I do this. I hope.

The easy way that I could tell the difference between the two styles is is that the 32 spline has 4 key ways and the 33 spline has 3 key ways which you can see without taking the arm off. This is to help others figure it out without driving yourselves crazy!!!

How do you bleed the gearbox after filling the pump and reservoir?
@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 4 жыл бұрын
Raise the front end, fill reservoir and cycle steering lock to lock with engine off to burp the air out of the system. Keep reservoir full and do this until air bubbles dissipate. This may take 10-20 cycles. Then start engine and repeat until system is bled. Mike

What the hell is it with these GM's and the steering? I have to do mine too because it gets air in the system found out through osmosis of replacing everything.

What a professional job! I appreciate you taking the time and effort to put anti seize on the components that someone else down the road will be grateful for! I am glad I watched your video...I just ordered a new RedHead box to replace my stock one...but I have already replaced the pitman arm very recently...I have no idea what the spline count is on the pitman, nor do I know the spline count on the box coming my way. I will need to make some calls. Thank you for taking the time...I for one wish you had covered the bleeding process. But, I think RedHead has specific instructions for that. Any suggestions on best power steering fluid to use?
@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comments. As for power steering fluid, any off the shelf power steering fluid will meet the requirements. I know a lot of people run ATF but that’s kind of old school and some seals require different additives so I tend to stick with manufacturer’s recommendations. I have had excellent results with either Valvoline’s power steering fluid or AC Delco’s. For the past several years now I’ve been running the AC Delco in my 2500 HD Duramax as well as my Jeep Wrangler that I put an LS in. Mike

Thanks for putting up a decent video without moving & bouncing a camera around at multiple angles where we'd easily lose track of where is the area of work. Just curious, was it leaking steering fluid?

I would make certain there isn’t something in the linkages binding before just replacing the gearbox. Check ball joints, tie rods, etc. first. Thanks for watching. Mike

When installing the pitman arm to the gear box is there an indexing mark on each component for proper alignment?
@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 4 жыл бұрын
Not a mark per se but a flat section in the splines that will only allow the pitman arm to index to the sector shaft in one position. Mike

I have a gearbox leaking from what I think is the sector shaft seal. Is it worth to re seal these? Or should ya just replace them.
@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 Жыл бұрын
At the time I could not locate a seal kit so I had to get a replacement gearbox (re-manned). It would definitely be more cost effective to re-seal if you could source a seal kit. Mike

I have an ‘05 Hummer H2, and I have a power steering leak, and went under the truck and I could see the splines where the pitman arm goes to the gear box, I remember I watched this video before to reference it, and it looks like the pitman arm isn’t seated correctly I could see all the splines.

@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 3 жыл бұрын
Turn input shaft one direction until it stops (do NOT force it). Put an orientation mark referencing the sector shaft’s position. Turn the other direction until it stops while counting how many turns of the input shaft and mark sector shaft orientation. Divide turns in half and turn back that amount. Sector shaft should be halfway between marks at either side and is now centered. Mike

My 99 is hard to turn to the right. Left is great. I assumed the seals are shot internally?
@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 5 жыл бұрын
More than likely a seal on the internal spool valve is allowing fluid past. That’s about all I can think if causing different turning left vs right, unless there is a component in the steering system binding up somewhere. Mike

@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 Жыл бұрын
Sorry. It's pretty simple though. Just raise the front end and turn steering wheel lock to lock without the engine running to work out the air pockets. Once you stop adding fluid to bring it to level, start the engine and repeat. I prefer to do it with no stress on the system so I raise the front tires off the ground. How that helps and thanks for watching. Mike

@@zmotorsports62 great video clip on doing this job. I have a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 and have a whining Gear noise associated with Engine RpMs . After replacing what I though was a Bad Power Steering Pump still have the noise. Swapped out the alternator with a buddies truck (just to take that out of the question) and replaced the belts and idler pulley and tensioner . still the same gear noise. What I have noticed also is when turning right getting a hum like a bad tire .When idling almost seems like no power steering have to rev the engine to turn wheels . So I'm guessing the Power steering Box any Ideas ??All fittings have ample grease .
@zmotorsports62
@zmotorsports62 5 жыл бұрын
The boxes generally don’t make noise but I guess it’s possible. Usually a squealing noise from the steering system is either the pressure relief valve in the pump or the gerotor gears in the pump. Any strain on the belt train can exaggerate any other bearing in the entire belt train such as a tensioner, alternator bearing or even an A/C compressor outer bearing. I’ve found using a stethoscope to isolate the noise is very helpful. Just be EXTREMELY careful as you will be around moving parts. Mike
