Just a run-of-the-mill Chevy truck with a Reduced Engine Power complaint.
Engine DTC P1515: Throttle Performance.
How hard can it be to diagnose?
However the owner also wants a PERMANENT solution.
Can we trust Reman parts?
Enjoy the battle!
Ivan

Something that an instructor said with great importance to me years ago is that when it comes to electronic throttle stuff, OEM parts only with absolutely no exceptions. The throttle body on a gas engine is the primary means of modulating the engine output and while there is some redundancy and the ECM could reduce engine power through other means if the throttle were to fail wide open, how long could that take and what could happen in the meantime? The whole debacle with Toyota and the throttle pedal getting stuck under the floormat shows that you definitely can't count on the driver of the vehicle to react in any sort of intelligent way if the vehicle accelerates on its own. Far too much liability to try and save a buck, use OEM electronic throttle parts only with no exceptions.

They were OEM parts. However the "reman" parts are always highly suspect in my book, and new TB is discontinued for this model.

Good video on what could have been a run-of-the-mill repair. So down the rabbit hole we go. I used to work for the phone company. One of the reminders that...... if you need to complete to work done by a previous tech, you almost need to re-track their work at every point or face a question of errors. Looking forward to the follow-up. Watching you with that SNAP-ON is bringing me into a new world of diagnosis benefits, for an old tech. Thanks J K

Here's an idea for all you engineers... Have a cable run between the gas pedal and the throttle body. Sure would eliminate issues or complications caused by motors, potentiometers or wiring. KISS!
@psdaengr911
@psdaengr911 4 жыл бұрын
A six foot long mechanical cable isn't as sexy and marketable as three sensors, a computer, 5 connectors and 200 feet of wiring. Plus it can be diagnosed and repaired cheaply by anyone who can use basic hand tools, cleaner and lubricant. Same goes for speedometers and cruise control. Cascading complexity upon poor basic design decisions is why the real cost of cars has increased while their functionality as transportation has not. When you sell bigger, plusher and sexier instead of just big enough, just comfortable enough to use and reliable, you encourage unnecessary use, get car commuters, traffic and global issues like bad air.The increase cost just aggravates everything.

@@psdaengr911 I'm 68 years old. I've had lots of cars, some cool & sexy, some fairly pedestrian. I've never broke a throttle or detent cable. I have sometimes lubed them with my handy motorcycle cable oiler. I don't expect cars be as easy to repair as say, a '64 Falcon (with a 200 in line 6) but when I do buy a car, I look for ease of repair. I would never buy any vehicle that use "drive by wire".

Intermittent GM throttle issues can be the worst. Sometimes they’ll never act up the whole time you have the vehicle. They have issues with everything on their trucks from the APP sensor to the throttle body and every connector in between. There is nothing more frustrating than to look at everything on a scope in every situation imaginable only for it to never act up and then within a day of turning the car back over its back. It doesn’t help that most of the time it’s been to a dealer at some point and they’ve smeared every connector with dielectric grease like it’s some kind of contact enhancer 🙄

I had a similar issue with e250 ford van. A shop put a motor in and left the harness laying wherever it was left after install. It wasn't secured properly The fan nicked the ground wire with such precision it didn't show damage to the loom upon a look over. It was only held together by 2 strands of wire. It was enough to light a led test light but not a headlight. That's were the shop messed up (led). I'm not a fan of led test lights. I've seen them light just with a corrosion connection.

Especially when GM is implementing the technology. They'll either stick with something a decade longer after it should have gone away, or implement something way too early. Electronic throttle is solid stuff now, but that far back it had teething problems. I never had actual problems in an 05 Toyota with electronic throttle, but to call it unrefined would be an understatement.

I was first thinking the butterfly position feedback connection was nasty, and causing the computer to drive the motor wrongly. But you did say later that the owner had cleaned and added earths so that was a no no lol. The new but faulty throttle body created mayhem and he next replaced the throttle peddle, i bet that has a fault in the matched pots. I would put both original parts back and see what happens. It's an interesting fault anyway :-D

Missing troubleshooting step (19:00): Move the connection back onto the mounted (NAPA) TB and retest. The contacts could have had oxidation that was scraped off by unplugging and replugging the connector, or a slightly out of spec (bent or undersized) contact.

5:00 I've not seen the rest of the video yet, but based on the code and parts canon, my bet it on the power or ground to the throttle controller, resulting in insufficient torque to open and/or close the throttle, while the TPS works fine (otherwise it would set a correlation code).

This... pinched wire, bad ground or got two wired flipped which aren’t initially cause of conflict but become one. I’d be rip out the wiring changes that were made by customer/for customer and redo it by the book. I know made that mistake a few times adding features to my car that i initially opted out of from factory. Couldn’t for life of my work out what was wrong everything was happy with diagnostic module checks all communicating fine until car was running for a few minutes and even initially works after start up but then quickly got buggy. Turns out flipped two of can bus networks across each other so like can bus1 + was wired to canbus2 + wire and vise versus and was causing odd communication patterns only when things were all running all together bugged it. And I spent hours on locating the fault and using wiring diagrams and wasn’t till I ripped out all wiring that i added and redid it that it was obvious i flipped two wires around.

Never buy a remanufactured part that contain electronics, because most of them put Chinese electronics junks part, the body part is OEM but the electronics replaced in it is Chinese junk so the part is no longer OEM, like remanufactured OEM alternator that contains Chinese regulator and diod is become a Chinese junk part, even branded new part sometimes they put junk electronics in it, it happen to me with a branded new distributor bought from rock auto for 150 dollar and it worked for an hour and half lucky I wasn't in the highway, just put the old OEM one back and the car start right away, It was just a suspicion of the new part because of the way the car shutdown and crank no start, I opened the new distributor (because rock. Auto refund me but they didn't require the part return), and I tested the ignitor that has no brand in it, and it was off chart, the coil tested ok, so I replaced the ignitor and the coil and the car start and still running on the new distributor for a month now, but sometimes the Chinese part work for long time like a Chinese distributor bought from Amazon and worked for three years, it could work more but I couldn't remove the screw that hold the rotor, it like welded with the distributor.

In an overall system with multiple constituent parts, during "troubleshooting" a good part gets swapped out for an unknowingly bad one, then the actually bad part is replaced and an issue remains. The remaining issue may be similar symptomatically as here. Eventually the "troubleshooting" ends when there are no constituent parts left to be swapped, human nature being to assume that new parts are known good so are not revisited. I always get a slight chill when I get a call out sent to me that details a whole list of what the customer has tried followed by a history of various other techs having attended and condemning one thing or another each time. Depending on the complexity of the overall system, when given this scenario to sort out I either; A. Put all the original parts back in then diagnose the original fault that triggered the chain of tears. B. Reverse out the various changes and parts one by one until I see a change in some parameter - then have an avenue to explore. But still keep new parts remaining in the system as suspect in my head until proved otherwise. Either way it is usually very time consuming to handle an issue that has been "touched" by multiple people and had many parts thrown at it. In a small part because the customer's description of what the original issue was is by this point largely irrelevant - in reality you are no longer dealing with the original issue. It is fun unpicking these things though. If it were simple I wouldn't be there :D

I had an issue like this on my 6.0 Hummer H2, and found a wire that had broken insulation, and my heater core hoses were leaking coolant onto the broken wire that lead to the TPS. As soon as I cleaned and put electrical tape on the wire, I’ve never gotten engine power reduced again. Nice video !

This has got to be the most horrific problem to get on a GM product. We had one we battled that would never recreate the problem when we drove it but a rough road would trigger the problem but a restart would cure it till the next time. Looking forward to part 2 and 3 though i doubt you were. :) SMA had one where an accessory was pulling down the voltage and causing issues.
